Since then, he has been re-elected to Parliament four times.He was first appointed to the Cabinet as Minister for Education between 2003 and 2008. He later also served as Minister for Finance for nine years, between 2007 and 2015; and Minister for Manpower, between 2011 and 2012.In 2011, Tharman was appointed Deputy Prime Minister. He relinquished the role to become Senior Minister in 2019. He was also appointed Coordinating Minister for Social Policies in the same year to advise the Prime Minister on economic policies.Tharman has also served as MAS chairman since 2011, and was appointed the deputy chairman of the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation (GIC) in 2019.
