However, the firm also warned that economic uncertainty should encourage investors to remain selective and diversified as Q2 approaches. “We think it's more likely than not that the U.S. avoids a recession in 2024, but economic uncertainty remains high with the economy running at full capacity, household savings diminishing, the labor market slowing down, and the U.S. Treasury yield curve still inverted,” Russell Investments stated. While Russell Investments believes that a recession can be bypassed, it still sees potential pitfalls. If an investor scratches below the basic surface of the market, they will see that “cracks are becoming visible,\" the firm stated. “The U.S. labor market is cooling, with job openings down about 25% as of mid-March from their early 2022 peak, and there are signs that lower-income households are coming under stress,\" Russell noted. The investment firm added that credit card and auto loan default rates are up above pre-pandemic levels, and on the corporate side, high-yield default rates are rising and commercial real estate delinquencies continue to increase. Looking at Wednesday’s market action, the S&P 500 (SPY) (SP500), Dow (DJI) (DIA), and Nasdaq (COMP.IND) (QQQ) are all higher.
