S&P 500 SCORES FIRST CLOSE ABOVE 6K
Wall Street's main indexes ended higher on Monday ahead of an upcoming batch of economic data that could influence the Federal Reserve's pace of interest rate cuts.
Indeed, at 6,001.35, the S&P 500 index .SPX eked out its first finish above the 6,000 level, while posting its 51st record closing high of the year. Additionally, the Dow .DJI, at 44,293.13, closed above 44,000 for the first time.
Meanwhile, investors are especially focused on the consumer price inflation report due on Wednesday, and a raft of other key data this week for signals on the economy and monetary policy outlook.
S&P 500 sectors were mixed on Monday though both consumer discretionary .SPLRCD and financials .SPSY each rose more than 1%. Tech .SPLRCT, off about 0.9%, took the biggest hit.
Under the surface, regional .KRX and big banks .SPXBK, as well as small caps .RUT were outperformers.
Chip .SOX and gold stocks .HUI were on the weak side.
Among indexes making record closing highs were the S&P 500, DJI, Nasdaq composite .IXIC, Dow Transports .DJT, S&P 400 mid-cap .IDX, NYSE Composite .NYA, S&P 500 consumer discretionary, financials, and industrials .SPLRCI.
