Indexes Open Lower; Boeing Stock Drops After South Korean Crash -- WSJ

Dow Jones2024-12-30

By Caitlin McCabe and Krystal Hur

Investors aren't feeling so cheery as year-end approaches.

U.S. stocks dropped Monday morning, following declines in Asia and Europe. With the year wrapping up Tuesday, many investors are likely trimming risk from their portfolios and locking in gains for the year.

Through Friday, the S&P 500 is up 25% in 2024, on pace for its best year since 2021.

Boeing stock retreated following a plane crash Sunday that killed 179 people. The South Korean passenger jet, operated by Jeju Air, was a Boeing 737-800.

In recent trading:

The 10-year Treasury yield dropped below 4.6%. It had settled Friday at 4.619%, the highest since May.

Bitcoin traded below $93,000. It has pulled back sharply after hitting an all-time-high of $108,309 earlier this month.

In Asia, indexes mostly lost ground. Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 1% on its final trading day of the year to finish with a 19% annual gain.

The Stoxx Europe 600 edged lower.
