Stock Futures Slip; Boeing Stock Drops After South Korean Crash -- WSJ

Dow Jones2024-12-30

By Caitlin McCabe

Investors aren't feeling so cheery as year-end approaches.

U.S. stock futures fell early Monday, following declines in Asia and Europe. With the year wrapping up on Tuesday, many investors are likely trimming risk from their portfolios and locking in gains for the year.

Through Friday, the S&P 500 is up 25% in 2024, on pace for its best year since 2021.

Boeing stock retreated premarket following a plane crash Sunday that killed 179 people. The South Korean passenger jet, operated by Jeju Air, was a Boeing 737-800.

In recent trading:

--U.S. stock futures slipped. On Friday, a fall in technology shares dragged the three major indexes lower, with the S&P 500 losing 1.1%.

--The 10-year Treasury yield hovered around 4.6%. It had settled Friday at 4.619%, the highest since May.

--Bitcoin traded above $93,500. It has pulled back sharply after hitting an all-time-high of $108,309 earlier this month.

--In Asia, indexes mostly lost ground. Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 1% on its final trading day of the year to finish with a 19% annual gain.

--The Stoxx Europe 600 edged lower.
