Boeing Shares Slip After Crash Prompts 737 Inspections in South Korea -- WSJ

Dow Jones2024-12-30

By Sharon Terlep

Boeing shares fell nearly 4% premarket Monday after a 737-800 operated by a South Korean airline crashed over the weekend, killing nearly all of the 181 people aboard.

Investigators are working to determine what caused the 15-year-old jet operated by Jeju Air to skid off the runway, collide with a concrete barrier and burst into flames as it attempted to land Sunday.

South Korea has ordered an inspection of all 737-800 planes, a workhorse of commercial aviation. The country's transport ministry said there are 101 planes of the Boeing model operating in South Korea, and that it plans on inspections to ensure regulations regarding maintenance are being followed properly.

Shortly before landing, the control tower warned of a possible bird strike and the Jeju Air pilots issued a mayday. Videos showed the jet's landing gear wasn't deployed as the plane skidded down the runway.

It is one of the deadliest aviation disasters in years.
