Lutnick on CNBC: U.S. Likely to Grant Reprieve to USMCA-Compliant Goods -- WSJ

Dow Jones03-06

By Alyssa Lukpat

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said that Canadian and Mexican goods compliant with USMCA, the free-trade agreement President Trump signed with the countries in 2020, likely won't have a tariff until next month.

Lutnick told CNBC Thursday morning: "My expectation is the president will come to the agreement today and hopefully we will announce this today that USMCA-compliant goods will not have a tariff for the next month until April 2nd. That includes the autos." Most imports to the U.S. from Canada and Mexico comply with the agreement. Goods from Canada and Mexico were set to be under 25% tariffs that went into effect Tuesday, with a reprieve already extended to the auto industry.
