As Yihai International Holding (HKG:1579) climbs 8.0% this past week, investors may now be noticing the company's five-year earnings growth

Simply Wall St.03-07

Yihai International Holding Ltd. (HKG:1579) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 11% in the last month. But that is little comfort to those holding over the last half decade, sitting on a big loss. Indeed, the share price is down 72% in the period. So we're hesitant to put much weight behind the short term increase. We'd err towards caution given the long term under-performance.

While the stock has risen 8.0% in the past week but long term shareholders are still in the red, let's see what the fundamentals can tell us.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

While the share price declined over five years, Yihai International Holding actually managed to increase EPS by an average of 5.9% per year. So it doesn't seem like EPS is a great guide to understanding how the market is valuing the stock. Or possibly, the market was previously very optimistic, so the stock has disappointed, despite improving EPS.

Due to the lack of correlation between the EPS growth and the falling share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics to try to understand the share price movement.

In contrast to the share price, revenue has actually increased by 9.1% a year in the five year period. A more detailed examination of the revenue and earnings may or may not explain why the share price languishes; there could be an opportunity.

Yihai International Holding is well known by investors, and plenty of clever analysts have tried to predict the future profit levels. So it makes a lot of sense to check out what analysts think Yihai International Holding will earn in the future (free analyst consensus estimates)

What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for Yihai International Holding the TSR over the last 5 years was -69%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

A Different Perspective

Yihai International Holding's TSR for the year was broadly in line with the market average, at 41%. The silver lining is that the share price is up in the short term, which flies in the face of the annualised loss of 11% over the last five years. We're pretty skeptical of turnaround stories, but it's good to see the recent share price recovery. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
