U.S. Retail Data Seen as Disappointing -- Market Talk
Dow Jones03-17
1114 ET - A 0.2% increase in U.S. retail sales in February is far from enough to offset January's downwardly revised 1.2% decline, Wells Fargo's Tim Quinlan and Shannon Grein write. Markets' initial reaction to the data was positive, but Quinlan and Grein say sales were actually "disappointing." They highlight January's sharp revision from a 0.9% decline, "resulting in what turns out to be the worst month for retail sales since 2021." The economists worry that Trump's trade policy could further harm consumption. "Broad tariffs will have a far-reaching impact on consumer spending," they say. (paulo.trevisani@wsj.com; @ptrevisani)
