U.S. Auto Tariffs Send a Fatal Signal, Head of German Auto Association Says -- Market Talk

Dow Jones03-27

0651 GMT - President Trump's 25% tariffs on all passenger cars and light commercial vehicles not manufactured in the U.S. "send a fatal signal for free, rules-based trade," says Hildegard Muller, President of the German Association of the Automotive Industry. The tariffs, which are scheduled to take effect on April 2, will place a significant burden on both companies and the automotive industry's closely interwoven global supply chains-with negative consequences, especially for consumers-including in North America, she says. "The German automotive industry is calling for immediate negotiations between the US and the EU on a bilateral agreement." Muller says the EU must now act with unity and strength and continue to signal its willingness to negotiate. (dominic.chopping@wsj.com)
