Trump Tariff Letters May Offer Some Wiggle Room -- Market Talk

Dow Jones07-07

0557 GMT - There isn't much reason to panic even though only a few trade deals have been reached with just days to go before the "Liberation Day" tariff pause ends, says Pepperstone's Michael Brown. He notes that the Trump administration has shown numerous times that it is unwilling and/or unable to stomach superhigh tariffs akin to a trade embargo. And the letters Trump has said he will send informing countries of the tariffs give plenty of wriggle room, Brown reckons. Not only are they being sent before the deadline, but the duties outlined in the letters won't kick in until Aug. 1. "Hence, this has all the hallmarks of another 'escalate to de-escalate' strategy, teeing us up nicely for another TACO moment in pretty short order." (fabiana.negrinochoa@wsj.com)
