Itochu Corp. and Seven Bank Ltd. will begin examining a capital and business alliance, the companies announced Monday. The alliance may be formed by the end of the year, and could include replacing the ATMs installed at FamilyMart stores with Seven Bank ATMs, as FamilyMart is affiliated with Itochu.
Seven Bank currently operates about 28,000 ATMs nationwide, primarily at 7-Eleven stores. FamilyMart has about 16,000 ATMs nationwide, including those operated by E-net Co., a company funded by Japanese banks, and Japan Post Bank Co.
With cashless payments becoming more popular, ATMs are unlikely to see major growth in demand. Seven & i Holdings Co. is focusing on its convenience store business, and by June it had reduced its stake in Seven Bank, including through its subsidiary Seven-Eleven Japan Co., from 46.4% to 39.9%.
