U.K. Housing Market Shows Resilience But Tax Talk Prompts Jitters -- Market Talk

Dow Jones2025-09-15

0726 GMT - Rightmove's September House Price Index shows the continuing resilience of the U.K. housing market, RBC Capital Markets analysts Anthony Codling and Oliver Dyson say in a note. Asking prices rose after three months of declines, suggesting that despite current uncertainty there may be an autumn selling season, the analysts say. And although U.K. housing secretary Steve Reed aims to accelerate the pace of housebuilding, the policy suggestions of other departments risk slowing it down, the analysts say. "Growing speculation about changes in property taxes is starting to cause 'jitters' to rise according to Rightmove, which, in our view, may temper the level of housing transactions for the next three months," the analysts say. Vistry shares are up 1.5% followed by Bellway, up 0.9% and Persimmon, up 0.7%. (anthony.orunagoriainoff@dowjones.com)
