OpenAI's for-profit arm finalized its conversion into a public benefit corporation and reached a deal with Microsoft that will see the tech giant take a 27% stake in the artificial intelligence startup valued at roughly $135 billion.
The conversion will allow OpenAI to go forward with more traditional forms of fundraising more easily.
Under the agreement, Microsoft will have exclusive intellectual-property rights to OpenAI technology until 2032.
The announcement, made in a joint statement Tuesday, could clear the way for the Chat-GPT-maker to become publicly traded in the future.
Shares in Microsoft rose nearly 4% early Tuesday.
Updates to follow as news develops.
