Woodside Energy Group's (ASX:WDS) shares were slightly higher in recent trading on Friday after ABC reported Thursday that Greenpeace Australia Pacific urged the National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environment Management Authority (Nopsema) to be tougher on companies that breached their environmental obligations.
Nopsema's probe found that Woodside breached its environmental obligations by continuing the decommissioning operations at the Minerva gas well and pipeline off the coast of Port Campbell in Victoria despite knowing the environmental risks, the report said.
The regulator issued the decommissioning order in July 2025 after around 186 kilograms of plastic components had been swept out to sea, the report said. It also ordered Woodside to review relevant health, safety, and environmental management requirements for Minerva.
A Woodside spokesperson was quoted by the report as saying that the company continues to monitor reports of spilling plastic debris and is looking to resume clean-up operations.
