The Manhattan Judge Set to Oversee Maduro's First U.S. Court Appearance -- WSJ

Dow Jones01-05

By James Fanelli

A 92-year-old federal judge is set to preside over Nicolás Maduro's arraignment Monday. U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein has been on the bench in the Southern District of New York for more than 25 years, after being appointed by President Bill Clinton.

He has handled several high-profile cases, including the prosecution of Archegos Capital Management founder Bill Hwang, who was sentenced to 18 years in prison after a jury found him guilty of manipulating stock prices. He has also presided over President Trump's attempts to have his state criminal case removed to a federal court. Hellerstein denied Trump's bids, but the litigation is ongoing.
