Ford (F) will provide an over-the-air update to a lighting system software glitch that led to the safety recall of nearly 4.4 million vehicles, including light trucks, vans and passenger vehicles, the company said Thursday in an email to MT Newswires.
Customers may also visit a Ford dealer to fix the issue, the company said.
A Ford spokesperson said an issue in the affected vehicles' "trailer control module may cause it to stop communicating with the vehicle, which typically happens when the vehicle is first started."
"If this occurs while a trailer is connected, the trailer's stop lamps and turn signals will not illuminate," the Ford spokesperson said, adding that on vehicles with a "'High series' trailer module, the trailer's braking function will also be lost."
The issues may "reduce a driver's ability to control an attached trailer while making it less visible to other drivers, increasing the risk of a crash," Ford said.
Ford said it is "not aware of any accidents, injuries, or fires" due to the issue.
Ford's alerting the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of the recall of the nearly 4.4 million vehicles due to the issue was acknowledged late Wednesday in a letter from the regulator to the carmaker.
