To build support for the war, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth cited Iran's previous role in providing deadly roadside bombs to Shiite militias in Iraq during the U.S. occupation of that country. Known as explosively formed penetrators, those bombs killed hundreds of American troops and wounded many more, according to U.S. officials.
Hegseth also cited Iran's role in providing sanctuary for al Qaeda operatives, an allegation the U.S. government has made for years. "The enemy of their enemy has been their friend as well," Hegseth said. "Iran, whether it's Iraq, whether it's Afghanistan, whether it's around the world, has been targeting Americans."
