The war in the Middle East intensified after Israel struck facilities in Iran that handle gas coming from the South Pars gas field. What is the field and why is it important?
South Pars is part of the world's largest gas field. The entire field is located in the Persian Gulf, spanning territory controlled by Iran and Qatar. Iran's part of the field is called South Pars, while Qatar's, which is larger, is called North Field.
Most gas from South Pars supplies Iran itself, so attacks on the Iranian facilities directly hurt domestic consumers. The field produced 730 million cubic meters of gas a day last year, according to the Iranian oil ministry's news agency, which is close to the average daily consumption of the European Union.
Qatar says its section of the field holds about 10% of the world's known natural-gas reserves, making Qatar the third-largest holder of reserves after Russia and Iran.
