The home of unlimited breadsticks and big doggie bags is lightening up.
Olive Garden owner Darden Restaurants said a new "Lighter Portions" menu at the Italian chain is driving visits. The new menu, which includes options of $15 and less, aims to attract both budget-conscious diners and those taking GLP-1 medications who want smaller amounts of food.
The new menu isn't serving up the margins that bigger portions provide, executives said, but customers are giving the options high marks for value.
Olive Garden's same-store sales rose 3.2% in Darden's third-quarter, below what some analysts had projected but above other casual-dining competitors, the company said. Darden raised its sales growth guidance for this fiscal year. The restaurant company's shares rose in Thursday morning trading.
