The rate of new home sales fell in January. Here are the main takeaways from the delayed report released by the Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development Thursday:
--Sales of new single-family homes fell to 587,000 in January, from 712,000 December.
--A consensus of economists polled by The Wall Street Journal had expected 719,0000 sales in January.
--The estimate for new houses for sale was 476,000 in January, compared with 474,000 in December, the Commerce Department said.
--The median sales price of new houses sold in January was $400,500, down 4.5% from December, it added.
--The January 2026 release for the New Residential Sales report was originally scheduled for Feb. 25 but was delayed due to the federal government shutdown.
