Strikes on energy infrastructure in the Middle East sent Brent crude futures surging as high $119.13 a barrel Thursday. They later pared some gains but hovered around $115. That's a far cry from the level of about $61 a barrel where they started the year.
But how do prices currently stack up to previous energy spikes?
Brent is now approaching its 2022 peak, which it hit in March of that year shortly after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
The real milestone to watch: Brent's record settlement high of $146.08, reached in July 2008, when energy markets suffered a price shock driven partially by mismatched supply and demand.
