Hyundai Motor North America is recalling over 61,000 of its newest Palisade model vehicles after a seat issue caused the death of a young child earlier this month.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Friday that the carmaker is recalling certain 2026 Palisade and 2026 Palisade Hybrid vehicles equipped with a limited or calligraphy trim package due to an issue where a person may become trapped in second and third row power seats if they fail to detect a person sitting in them.
The Palisade models have power-seating features where the seats can automatically fold, and shift forwards or backwards at the push of a button. The issue lies in that the seats could continue to fold shut or tilt even if there's a passenger on the seat, and could trap and injure people, especially children.
Hyundai said last week that it was investigating an incident where a young child lost her life in a Palisade model vehicle.
There is no fix yet, but a remedy is currently under development. As an interim repair, Hyundai will update the power seat control software.
