Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) is seeking to block nearly $660 million in U.S. bomb sales to Israel, escalating Democratic opposition to the Trump administration's war with Iran.
Sanders introduced three joint resolutions of disapproval aimed at halting the transfer of more than 20,000 bombs worth $650 million the administration has been attempting to fast-track by invoking emergency authority and bypassing Congress.
"Given the horrific destruction...the last thing in the world that American taxpayers need to do right now is to provide 22,000 new bombs to the Netanyahu government," Sanders said. "No more weapons to support an illegal war."
Under the Arms Export Control Act, lawmakers can force a Senate vote on such sales and bypass procedural hurdles like a filibuster, though they would still need a majority to pass.
