American A-10 attack planes and Apache attack helicopters are now striking Iranian targets on Iran's southern flank, said Gen. Dan Caine, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
The A-10s are striking Iranian fast-attack boats in the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has essentially closed to maritime traffic, Caine said. The U.S. Air Force has long sought to retire the A-10 to save funds to develop more advanced planes. But the A-10, with its nose-mounted 30-millimeter gun, has proved to be useful in past air campaigns against insurgents and now against Iranian targets.
