In commodities, Brent crude gained 5.8% to $113.61 a barrel, and WTI crude climbed 0.6% to $96.87 a barrel. The European benchmark price for natural gas, the Dutch futures contract TTF, was up 22.9% to 67.21 euros a megawatt hour.
The German 10-year Bund yield climbed by 2 basis points to 2.97% from 2.95%, and the yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury rose by 2 basis points to 4.287% from 4.265%. Bond prices and yields move in opposite directions.
Stocks in Asia were down as Japan's Nikkei 225 index dropped 3.4%, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng dropped 2%. China's benchmark Shanghai Composite declined 1.4%.
