Washington isn't planning to curb American exports of oil and natural gas in response to what could be the largest energy supply shock in history, U.S. officials said Thursday.
"To be clear, the Trump administration has no plan to implement restrictions on oil and gas exports," Energy Secretary Chris Wright wrote on social media. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum shared a similar post.
The difference between pricing benchmarks for American and global oil futures had jumped in recent days to their highest level in years as traders speculated that the U.S. could close the spigot of its shipments abroad. Analysts say such a move would have limited impact on stemming steep price hikes stateside because many domestic refineries rely on heavier types of crude that tend to be imported.
