U.S. Sanctions 10 Accused of Funneling Funds to Hezbollah -- WSJ

Dow Jones03:06

By Mariah Timms

The Treasury Department announced Friday that it was sanctioning 10 people accused of funneling more than $100 million to the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah in recent years. Members of the network, which includes individuals based in Lebanon, Syria, Poland, Slovenia, Qatar and Canada, have been accused of laundering money, arms and telecommunications equipment in sanctions-evading schemes through six companies, also now sanctioned, since 2020.

The sanctions freeze the individual and company assets within the U.S., imposing an "across-the-board prohibition against transfers or dealings of any kind with regard to the property," according to the Office of Foreign Assets Control, the Treasury arm that oversees the sanctions of foreign nationals and nations. "Iran is the head of the snake when it comes to global terrorism," said Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, adding that proxies such as Hezbollah "carry out Tehran's mission to sow chaos and destruction beyond its borders."
