Iran launched missiles, drones and small-boat attacks at U.S. warships near the Strait of Hormuz, and the U.S. responded by intercepting the threats and striking Iranian military sites responsible for the attacks, according to a statement from U.S. Central Command.
Iranian state media said Iran's military fired ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and suicide drones at the warships in retaliation for a U.S. attack on an Iranian oil tanker. The U.S. fired disabling shots at a tanker earlier this week that it said was trying to breach the blockade.
After Iran fired at the warships, the U.S. targeted Iranian missile and drone launch sites, command and control locations and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance nodes, Centcom said. Explosions were reported at several sites near the strait.
"CENTCOM does not seek escalation but remains positioned and ready to protect American forces," the command, responsible for the Middle East, said in a statement. No U.S. assets were struck, Centcom said.
