Trump: Russia releases US Marine Robert Gilman

President Donald Trump announced on August 11 that Robert Gilman, a former United States Marine imprisoned in Russia in 2022, is being released and will return to the U.S. tonight. Trump said Russia agreed to release Gilman on a humanitarian basis with no exchange of prisoners.

"I am proud to announce that American Citizen Robert Gilman, a former United States Marine, is coming HOME!" Trump wrote on X. "After my discussions with President Vladimir Putin, Russia has agreed to release him, very much on a Humanitarian Basis. We appreciate this decision, and the fact that Russia asked for no one in return — No exchange took place."

Gilman will land at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, D.C., tonight, where representatives of the president, some of whom are on the plane with him, will welcome him back. Trump said he spoke with Gilman, who requested a great cheeseburger upon landing, which Trump promised to provide.

Trump highlighted his administration's record of bringing home Americans detained abroad, noting they have returned hundreds of people to their families and freed many non-Americans from captivity worldwide. He thanked his team, including Steve Witkoff, Adam Boehler, Sebastian Gorka, and Jared Kushner, for making the release possible.
