President Donald Trump announced on X on September 18 that the United States has entered into an agreement with the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenland, granting the US permanent control over security and all other needs in Greenland at no cost to the United States.
Trump stated that under the agreement, no U.S. adversary can ever have a base, military presence, or make sensitive investments in Greenland without express written approval from the US. He described the deal as an "Infinite Life" Agreement with no end, saying "This solution is a great one for the United States of America, Denmark, Greenland, and all of our Allies."
The President said the US will immediately begin developing a large military presence in the appropriate part of Greenland, working with the local population. He noted that for over 100 years, presidents have known Greenland's strategic importance but none had acted, and he is proud to have "permanently and conclusively addressed this very important situation."
Denmark and Greenland have not yet issued official responses to the announcement.
