JetBlue Airways has increased the fees to check luggage for the second time this year.
The price for a passenger's first checked bag now starts at $50, up from $39, for domestic flights and itineraries to international destinations such as Canada and the Caribbean. That fee applies to bags paid for more than 24 hours before departure. Prices are higher during what JetBlue considers peak travel periods, which includes flights between Nov. 19 and Jan. 18.
The fee will still be waived for travelers with JetBlue-branded credit cards and certain levels of Mosaic status within the airline's frequent-flier program.
JetBlue's move is intended to help offset rising fuel and operating costs, a company spokesman said. The airline previously hiked the fees in March after jet-fuel prices jumped following the start of the Iran conflict. Other major carriers including United, Delta and American ultimately followed suit.
