The tech heavy Nasdaq Composite soared 8.1% last week, its best weekly performance since March.</p><p>In a note published over the weekend, Goldman’s economic research team led by Jan Hatzius, said that the core price consumption expenditures index, the gauge of price pressures that strips out volatile items like food and energy which is closely watched by the U.S. central bank, will drop from the current level of 5.1% to 3.5% by the middle of 2023 and may hit 2.9% by December .</p><p>“We expect core inflation to fall significantly in 2023 for three key reasons,” wrote Goldman. ” 1) a negative swing in the contribution from supply-constrained goods categories, following supply-chain improvements, 2) a peak in shelter categories reflecting a further rebound in vacancies and a waning boost from reopening and the return to cities, and 3) slower wage growth, reflecting the continuing rebalancing of the labor market.”</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/449af2c83e44ed50baca81a6aa38f323\" tg-width=\"699\" tg-height=\"488\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Inflation due to supply constraints are presently adding 0.6 percentage points to the core PCE, but this will shift to minus 0.4 percentage points towards the end of next year, accounting for nearly half the slowdown in the overall core measure.</p><p>“Supply chain disruptions and shipping congestion eased significantly in 2022, and inventories of cars and consumer goods have rebounded from extremely depressed levels. The supply of semiconductors in particular has improved dramatically, with automotive microchip shipments now 42% above 2019. This has already catalyzed a 5% decline in the used car CPI, and we assume another 15% drop in 2023,” Goldman explained.</p><p>Shelter inflation should peak this spring, Goldman reckons, as recent strong demand for rental properties has already sparked an increase in supply, with 1 million apartments under construction, the biggest pipeline since the mid 1970’s.</p><p>“Rental vacancies rates are starting to rebound as a result and are likely to return to pre-pandemic rates next year. Additionally, the boost from continuing leases renewing at market rates now appears to be reflected in the monthly pace of shelter inflation, as CPI microdata reveal that it already embeds an acceleration in renewal rent growth to 8% year-on-year. Also, rent inflation for new leases has fallen sharply: we estimate to just +3% annualized last quarter,” says Goldman.</p><p>Finally, a softer jobs market should suppress wage growth and help reduce service sector inflation by late 2023.</p><p>“Labor market rebalancing is already lowering wage growth, particularly in sectors with large declines in the jobs-workers gap such as retail and leisure. Under Delaware law, directors generally get leeway to use their “business judgment” to set pay.</p><p>“It’s true the executive compensation package approved for Elon Musk is remarkably large, but Delaware courts are usually rather deferential” to directors’ decisions on pay when a majority of shareholders vote to back the plan, said Paul Regan, a Widener University law professor who specializes in Delaware corporate law.</p><p>Still, the failure of the Tesla directors to disclose to investors some of the pay package’s “challenging” milestones were likely to be achieved within a little over a year could be problematic, said Joel Fleming, a partner at law firm Block &amp; Leviton, who isn’t involved in the case.</p><p>“This is a strong case,” Fleming said. “Tesla’s board appears to have misled Tesla’s stockholders” who voted to back the package, he said.</p><p>In addition, “the fact that Musk has spent all this time on the Twitter takeover” strengthens the argument that he’s spread too thin to focus enough on Tesla.</p><p>The case is playing out in Delaware because Tesla is incorporated in the state, the home to 1.8 million US companies and more than 60% of Fortune 500 firms. Judges in its chancery court are business-law experts who hear cases without a jury.</p><p>The suit was filed by Richard Tornetta, who has owned nine Tesla shares since February 2018, according to court filings. Tornetta, whose business sells car parts for stereo systems and radar detectors, has been threatened online for bringing the case against Musk, his lawyers said.</p><p>Besides once playing drums for a now-defunctheavy-metal band, Tornetta is the lead plaintiff in another securities case in Delaware over Sirius XM’s 2018 buyout of Internet radio service Pandora. Tornetta didn’t respond to a request for comment.</p><p>Musk’s Tesla equity awards helped him become the world’s richest person last year. At his peak, Musk was worth $340 billion last November, according to theBloomberg Billionaires Index. His net worth dropped below $200 billion this month as Tesla shares hit a 52-week low.</p><p>Tesla directors justify Musk’s compensation in court filings by pointing to the company’s 12-fold increase in value over four years to $690 billion as of last month -- including a brief period starting in October 2021 when it exceeded more than $1 trillion.</p><p>Most US companies have adopted a similar pay-for-performance model, they say.</p><p>Tornetta also contends Tesla’s board is loaded with Musk’s friends and confidantes, making it so rife with conflicts of interest that it was incapable of making an independent decision on the billionaire’s pay.</p><p>He points to Musk’s long ties to Ehrenpreis, who headed up the board committee responsible for reviewing the CEO’s pay, as an example of the conflicts. Ehrenpreis, a Silicon Valley venture capitalist, was one of Tesla’s early investors and served as one of Musk’s advisers on the Twitter buyout. He is set to be the first witness in the case.</p><p>Musk also had the help of Todd Maron -- Tesla’s general counsel at the time, who had previously served as Musk’s divorce attorney -- in finalizing the compensation plan, Tornetta said. Maron, who left Tesla in 2018, also will testify in the case.</p><p>Tesla directors denied in court filings that they were beholden to Musk or that their judgment about his pay was tainted by conflicting interests.</p><p>Tornetta wants McCormick to tag Musk as Tesla’s controlling shareholder even though he owned only about 22% of the car company’s shares as of early 2018.</p><p>If Musk is deemed Tesla’s effective controller, the company must prove his pay package was “entirely fair,” a higher legal standard to meet rather than just relying on directors’ business judgment.</p><p>Tornetta filed his so-called derivative suit against Musk and other Tesla directors on behalf of the company. That means any money recovered will go back to the electric-car maker and not to Tornetta.</p><p>The case is Tornetta v. The third column contains the MoM acceleration – i.e. the difference between the percent change this month minus the percent change last month. The fourth column contains the Cumulative Contribution to the percent MoM change of CPI. This describes exactly how much each component contributed to the cumulative All Items MoM percent change in CPI. The sum of the values in this column will yield the MoM percent change of All Items CPI (with minor discrepancy due to rounding). Finally, the rightmost column contains the Cumulative Contribution to MoM Acceleration of All Items CPI. The sum of the contributions in this column adds up to the MoM Acceleration of All Items CPI. Although all five columns provide important information, we recommend that readers pay special attention to the rightmost column (Cumulative Contribution to Acceleration) as it reveals exactly what drove the MoM acceleration/deceleration in CPI during the current month compared to the prior month.</p><p>As can be seen in the table above, Core Services ex Housing and Core Goods decelerated very significantly, accounting for most of the overall deceleration in CPI. More details will be provided below.</p><p><b>Analysis of CPI Components that Contributed Most to Change &amp; Acceleration of CPI</b></p><p>In the following section, we perform the same contribution analysis as above, but at a more granular level of detail. In Figure 4 below, we list the top 10 CPI components (most granular level) that contributed negatively and positively to the MoM percent change in All Items CPI. For example, the significant decline in new and used car prices and health insurance may not be representative of core inflationary dynamics.</p><p>In Figure 5 below, we list the top 10 CPI components, at the most granular level, that contributed negatively and positively to the MoM acceleration (expressed in percent change) of All Items CPI. This indicates that housing inflation may possibly have peaked for this cycle and could be headed in a downward direction.</p><p>It is worthwhile to examine tables 4 and 5 above carefully as they are likely to include most or all of the items which surprised forecasters during the month.</p><p><b>Top Movers</b></p><p>In Figure 6 below, for general interest purposes, we show the components with the largest positive and negative MoM change (%). In fact, today’s numbers may tend to lower market expectations regarding how much (“terminal rate”), how fast and for how long the Fed may increase the Federal Funds interest rate.</p><p><b>Impact on Economic Performance.</b> On the margin, the numbers may lead to speculation that inflation has peaked and is heading down in the intermediate term. This will take pressure off of interest rates across the economy such as mortgage interest rates. This could alleviate some of the headwinds that the economy has recently been experiencing, particularly in interest rate sensitive sectors.</p><p><b>Potential Financial Markets’ Impact</b></p><p>The CPI report, on the margin, will likely decrease risk perceptions regarding the probability of the Fed being forced to tighten monetary policy to a degree that would induce recession. In particular, market expectations of the Fed’s so-called “terminal rate” may decrease. This would cause the cost of financing across the economy to decrease and overall financial conditions to ease somewhat. This should provide a positive boost for both bond and equity markets.</p><p>This month&#39;s report may provide a “window of opportunity” for bonds and stocks to rise during the next month, until the next CPI report comes out.</p><p>I would caution that the internal details of this report, although generally positive, may not be quite as bullish as they appear on the surface. Much of the deceleration in both All-Items CPI and Core CPI was due to a few volatile components, which may not be representative of underlying inflationary trends. In fact, today’s numbers may tend to lower market expectations regarding how much (“terminal rate”), how fast and for how long the Fed may increase the Federal Funds interest rate.Impact on Economic Performance. On the margin, the numbers may lead to speculation that inflation has peaked and is heading down in the intermediate term. This will take pressure off of interest rates across the economy such as mortgage interest rates. This could alleviate some of the headwinds that the economy has recently been experiencing, particularly in interest rate sensitive sectors.Potential Financial Markets’ ImpactThe CPI report, on the margin, will likely decrease risk perceptions regarding the probability of the Fed being forced to tighten monetary policy to a degree that would induce recession. In particular, market expectations of the Fed’s so-called “terminal rate” may decrease. This would cause the cost of financing across the economy to decrease and overall financial conditions to ease somewhat. This should provide a positive boost for both bond and equity markets.This month's report may provide a “window of opportunity” for bonds and stocks to rise during the next month, until the next CPI report comes out.I would caution that the internal details of this report, although generally positive, may not be quite as bullish as they appear on the surface. Much of the deceleration in both All-Items CPI and Core CPI was due to a few volatile components, which may not be representative of underlying inflationary trends.
