History books will show that 2022 was a huge disappointment for the stock market, although it did create some compelling opportunities for top-tier dividend stocks.</p><p>First of all, dividend stocks are a huge benefit in any portfolio. Dividend stocks pay a quarterly or monthly payment to shareholders, who can use the money for income (a great idea for retirees). Or for younger investors, a regular dividend payment can be reinvested into the market to help grow your portfolio quicker.</p><p>My Dividend Grader is a great tool to find these top-tier dividend stocks to buy. The Dividend Grader evaluates dividend stocks on a variety of metrics and assigns a letter grade – just like in school, the best dividend stocks get an “A” or “B” rating.</p><p>It’s similar to my Portfolio Grader tool, which also grades stocks based on earnings, analyst sentiment, momentum and qualitative standards.</p><p>You can find great dividend stocks to buy in a variety of sectors – this list includes defense, energy, biotech, materials and real estate. While the names and sectors vary, all of these stocks have one thing in common – they’re among the best dividend stocks you can buy heading into 2023.</p><h2><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/LMT\">Lockheed Martin </a></h2><p>Geopolitical tensions aren’t great for a lot of reasons, but one way to capitalize is defense contractors like <b>Lockheed Martin</b> (NYSE:<b>LMT</b>). Lockheed Martin is one of the biggest and most well-known contractors in the world and is always among the best dividend stocks to buy.</p><p>While the stock market spent much of 2022 in correction territory, LMT is up more than 30% on the year as the U.S. keeps a wary eye on the war in Ukraine and tensions with China and North Korea.</p><p>No doubt, Lockheed Martin makes money hand over fist. It brought in $16.58 billion just in the third quarter. While the company narrowly missed estimates of $16,68 billion, that appears to be a minor setback. Lockheed reaffirmed its outlook for the full year, for which it says it expects revenue of $65.25 billion and full-year earnings per share of $21.55.</p><p>Lockheed provides a solid dividend yield of 2.6%, helping push it to an “A” rating in the Portfolio Grader and a “B” rating in my Dividend Grader.</p><h2><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AMGN\">Amgen </a></h2><p>As a top biotech stock, <b>Amgen</b> (NASDAQ:<b>AMGN</b>) is on the cutting edge of providing treatments for a variety of ailments, including rheumatoid arthritis, bone cancer and psoriasis.</p><p>While it’s not a household name, Amgen has succeeded in building an impressive pipeline of medications that keeps that revenue and earnings rolling in.</p><p>Revenue in the third quarter was $6.65 billion, topping estimates by $100 million. Earnings per share were also solid at $4.70 per share, better than the $4.45 that the experts predicted.</p><p>Meanwhile, the stock is up more than 18% so far this year with most of those gains coming since early September when Amgen impressed investors and analysts alike by unveiling updated long-term positive data about the effectiveness of Repatha drug that is used to treat high cholesterol.</p><p>AMGN stock has a dividend yield of 2.7%. It has an “A” rating in the Portfolio Grader and a “B” rating in my Dividend Grader.</p><h2><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/ABR\">Arbor Realty Trust </a></h2><p>If you’re looking for reliable income from a stock, it rarely hurts to consider the best real estate names in the market. One of the best right now is <b>Arbor Realty Trust </b>(NYSE:<b>ABR</b>), which is involved with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac loan programs, FHA and low-income loans, and bridge loans.</p><p>Arbor is a real estate investment trust or REIT. REITs are special types of investments because they are required to distribute 90% of their taxable earnings to shareholders. That can create some pretty extraordinary payout ratios and ABR is no exception – currently, it pays a dividend yield of 10.8%.</p><p>Admittedly, with high interest rates there’s always a risk that the housing market will be slow for a while. But ABR doesn’t seem to be affected by the problem. Arbor topped top- and bottom-line estimates for revenue and EPS in each of the first three quarters.</p><p>Arbor Realty has a “B” rating in the Dividend Grader.</p><h2><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/SBLK\">Star Bulk Carriers </a></h2><p><b>Star Bulk Carriers</b> (NASDAQ:<b>SBLK</b>) has a stock price just under $20, but it paid a mammoth dividend over the last year of $6.55.</p><p>Its last three quarterly dividends came in at $1.25, $2 and $1.65. So, you’re looking at a dividend yield for SBLK of more than 30% right now.</p><p>Star Bulk transports dry bulk goods around the world on its fleet of 128 vessels. As the world is still coming to grips with the effects of Covid-19 shutdowns on the supply chain, Star Bulk’s vessels appear to be in demand. That should keep the profits coming in for shareholders.</p><p>SBLK stock has a “B” rating in my Portfolio Grader and an “A” rating in the Dividend Grader.</p><h2><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/FANG\">Diamondback Energy </a></h2><p>Texas-based <b>Diamondback Energy</b> (NASDAQ:<b>FANG</b>) is an energy exploration company that is involved with petroleum, natural gas liquids and natural gas.</p><p>Its holdings are in the Permian Basin in west Texas, where it also recently acquired the assets of Lario Permian, a subsidiary of <b>Lario Oil &amp; Gas Co.</b>, in exchange for $850 million plus 4.18 million shares of FANG stock. The deal gives Diamondback access to another 25,000 acres in the Northern Midland Basin. The deal is expected to close in late January.</p><p>That keeps Diamondback in growth mode. The company reported revenue in Q3 of $2.44 billion, which was more than 30% greater than a year ago. The revenue number also beat analysts’ expectations of $2.42 billion. EPS for the third quarter was also a pleasant surprise, coming in at $6.48 versus expectations of $6.36.</p><p>FANG stock is up 48% so far this year and offers a dividend yield of 5.3%. Not surprisingly, it has “A” ratings in both the Dividend Grader and the Portfolio Grader.</p><h2><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/CMC\">Commercial Metals </a></h2><p>As a major provider of recycled steel, <b>Commercial Metals</b> (NYSE:<b>CMC</b>) maintains operations in the United States and Poland.</p><p>Its recycled metals are used in bridges, roads, automobiles, airports and other major buildings. The company is the largest manufacturer of steel reinforcing bar, known as rebar, in North America and central Europe.</p><p>Earlier this month, CMC completed its acquisition of a Texas metal recycling facility and related assets from Kodiak Resources, adding another 55,000 tons of annual capacity to its portfolio.</p><p>Earnings for the company’s fiscal fourth quarter beat estimates on both the top and bottom lines. CMC reported revenue of $2.41 billion and EPS of $2.45, versus estimates for $2.37 billion revenue and EPS of $2.23.</p><p>Commercial Metals stock is up 30% so far this year and has a dividend yield of 1.4%. That gives it “A” grades in both the Dividend Grader and the Portfolio Grader.</p><h2><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/DVN\">Devon Energy </a></h2><p>No stock on this list has grown as much in 2022 as <b>Devon Energy</b> (NYSE:<b><u>DVN</u></b>). Fueled by higher oil and natural gas prices, Devon stock is up more than 60% on the year. And even if the globe sinks into a recession, Devon stock should be fine because analysts project crude oil prices to remain high for the next several years.</p><p>On Nov. 1, Devon announced a dividend of $1.35 per share; a 61% increase from a year ago. That puts Devon’s dividend yield at a whopping 7.3%.</p><p>The Oklahoma company should also benefit from the Biden administration’s deal with the European Union. Washington wants to reduce the EU’s reliance on Russian natural gas by providing at least 15 billion cubic meters of liquified natural gas in 2022.</p><p>As long as Russia remains at odds with the west, companies like Devon stand to capitalize in European markets.</p><p>DNV stock has an “A” rating in the Portfolio Grader and the Dividend Grader.</p></body></html>","source":"investorplace","collect":0,"html":"<!DOCTYPE html>\n<html>\n<head>\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; That should keep the profits coming in for shareholders.SBLK stock has a “B” rating in my Portfolio Grader and an “A” rating in the Dividend Grader.Diamondback Energy Texas-based Diamondback Energy (NASDAQ:FANG) is an energy exploration company that is involved with petroleum, natural gas liquids and natural gas.Its holdings are in the Permian Basin in west Texas, where it also recently acquired the assets of Lario Permian, a subsidiary of Lario Oil & Gas Co., in exchange for $850 million plus 4.18 million shares of FANG stock. The deal gives Diamondback access to another 25,000 acres in the Northern Midland Basin. The deal is expected to close in late January.That keeps Diamondback in growth mode. The company reported revenue in Q3 of $2.44 billion, which was more than 30% greater than a year ago. The revenue number also beat analysts’ expectations of $2.42 billion. EPS for the third quarter was also a pleasant surprise, coming in at $6.48 versus expectations of $6.36.FANG stock is up 48% so far this year and offers a dividend yield of 5.3%. Not surprisingly, it has “A” ratings in both the Dividend Grader and the Portfolio Grader.Commercial Metals As a major provider of recycled steel, Commercial Metals (NYSE:CMC) maintains operations in the United States and Poland.Its recycled metals are used in bridges, roads, automobiles, airports and other major buildings. The company is the largest manufacturer of steel reinforcing bar, known as rebar, in North America and central Europe.Earlier this month, CMC completed its acquisition of a Texas metal recycling facility and related assets from Kodiak Resources, adding another 55,000 tons of annual capacity to its portfolio.Earnings for the company’s fiscal fourth quarter beat estimates on both the top and bottom lines. CMC reported revenue of $2.41 billion and EPS of $2.45, versus estimates for $2.37 billion revenue and EPS of $2.23.Commercial Metals stock is up 30% so far this year and has a dividend yield of 1.4%. That gives it “A” grades in both the Dividend Grader and the Portfolio Grader.Devon Energy No stock on this list has grown as much in 2022 as Devon Energy (NYSE:DVN). said on Wednesday in a report that showed firms growing more pessimistic about the outlook.</p><p>Moreover, the US central bank’s latest collection of anecdotes from contacts across its 12 districts, known as the “Beige Book,” noted inflation pressures had eased somewhat and were expected to continue doing so, a key “soft data” indication that the Fed’s aggressive interest rate hikes may have started to turn the tide against the highest inflation in 40 years.</p><p>“Some contacts noted solid pricing power over the past six weeks, while others said cost pass-through was becoming more difficult as customers push back,” said the report, which was compiled by the Dallas Fed from contributions received through Oct 7.</p><p>“Looking ahead, expectations were for price increases to generally moderate.”</p><p>That was a notable contrast with the previous report from late summer that had concluded most Fed contacts then had “expected price pressures to persist at least through the end of the year.”</p><p>The view that inflation was moderating was accompanied by concerns over the economic cost of the Fed’s rate hikes aimed at bringing those price pressures to heel: Demand was generally seen as softening.</p><p>“Outlooks grew more pessimistic amidst growing concerns about weakening demand,” the Fed said.</p><p>The central bank’s latest summary of observations from its business, community and labour contacts was released in the run-up to its Nov 1-2 policy meeting.</p><h2>Impact of rate hikes</h2><p>With the latest data showing inflation by the Fed’s preferred measure continuing to run at more than three times the central bank’s 2 per cent target, despite what has already been the most aggressive round of Fed policy tightening in 40 years, the report may do little to temper expectations for a fourth straight 75-basis-point rate hike in three weeks.</p><p>Policymakers have signaled they will keep raising rates until they see inflation cooling, even as they acknowledge that higher borrowing costs will likely translate to slower growth, softer labor markets and a likely increase in unemployment.</p><p>US job growth has been strong, and the unemployment rate in September fell to 3.5 per cent. While underlying price pressures for goods have eased as supply chains heal, those of services, which tend to be stickier, continue to rise rapidly.</p><p>But as Fed policymakers lift their benchmark overnight lending rate, currently in the 3 per cent to 3.25 per cent range, nearer to the 4.5 per cent to 5 per cent range that most of them think will be needed to drive down inflation, they and outside analysts are looking for evidence that the policy tightening is starting to do its work.</p><p>Such signs could usher in a slower pace of rate hikes that Fed chairman Jerome Powell has said will come “at some point.”</p><p>So far, they have been hard to see in much of the broad economic data beyond that tracking housing, where a sharp deceleration is underway.</p><p>Reports into the Cleveland Fed, for one, said higher prices and interest rates were constraining demand, not only for housing but increasingly for motor vehicles as well.</p><p>“Auto dealers reported flat or decreasing sales, noting that consumers had become wary of higher payments because of increased interest rates and higher vehicle prices,” the Cleveland Fed reported.</p><p>Overall, higher interest rates as a factor affecting demand, especially in both the residential and commercial property and construction sectors, earned more than two dozen mentions in the latest Beige Book.</p><p>The report showed the job market remained tight on balance, though perhaps not as stringent as before. I&#39;m capitalizing on the volatility by hedging and buying high-quality stocks on big dips.</p><p>The Technical Image - Very Bearish Now</p><p><b>SPX 1-Year Chart</b></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/86a0e3641f8acc8cb2a23a7d95ff08fd\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"676\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>SPX(StockCharts.com )</p><p>The S&amp;P 500&#39;s bear market began right around the start of 2022. Since the bearish trend began, we&#39;ve seen a series of lower highs and lower lows. The most recent high occurred in mid-August when I put out a near-term top alert. Now, things are becoming more bearish. After the recent high, the market attempted to rebound but got smacked down by Jerome Powell&#39;s Jackson Hole remarks. More recently, the market tried to muster another rally, but the higher-than-anticipated inflation numbers brought a quick end to that attempt.</p><p>Now, we&#39;re looking at an increasingly bearish technical image as the SPX is putting in a pessimistic head and shoulders pattern and is on the verge of busting through critical 3,900 support. Once below this level, the S&amp;P 500 should at least retest the prior low around 3,700-3,600. However, a likelier scenario is that the S&amp;P will make a lower low, dropping the SPX down into the 3,400-3,000 range next.</p><h2>What Do Jackson Hole And Inflation Have In Common?</h2><p>At Jackson Hole, we learned just how intent the Fed is on battling inflation and how bearish this phenomenon is for the stock market. I wrote about the Fed&#39;s bearish symposium several weeks ago. The key takeaway from Chair Powell&#39;s speech is that inflation is much more persistent and challenging to deal with than previously expected. The Fed must do much more to lower inflation. The dynamic of high-interest rates, slower growth, and a worsening labor market will bring substantial pain to households and businesses.</p><p>Now, Let&#39;s Look At Inflation</p><p><b>CPI Inflation</b></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6e415ae81767865727859c61ace2822d\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"313\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>CPI inflation(TradingEconomics.com )</p><p>While inflation has decreased from the 9.1% reading, it remains remarkably high. Inflation is running hotter than we&#39;ve seen in about 40 years now. The primary issue is that the Fed has been raising interest rates and implementing other tightening measures like QT, but we&#39;re seeing a minimal effect on inflation. Therefore, the Fed needs to do more. However, more tightening will further constrict economic growth and decrease consumer confidence. Additionally, higher inflation, lower growth, and worsening spending negatively impact corporate profits and should lead to more pain as we advance.</p><h2>Don&#39;t Fight The Fed</h2><p>Wise people have told me, &#34;you don&#39;t fight the Fed.&#34; You don&#39;t want to fight the Fed when the central bank is easing. We saw ultra-loose monetary policy since the 2008 financial crisis, and stocks did great for much of that time. However, we are in a completely different economic environment now. As the Fed pulls liquidity out of markets, the cost of borrowing increases, growth slows, sentiment worsens, and risk assets deflate. Furthermore, we&#39;ve underestimated the severity of the inflation problem and the Fed&#39;s commitment to making it &#34;go away.&#34;</p><p><b>Rate Probabilities</b></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/50e5b344a6418c8597ba3e52b0570b80\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"496\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Fed Watch(CMEGroup.com )</p><p>Just one month ago, the market expected a 50 basis point hike at the upcoming Fed meeting. There is about a 25% probability that we may see a 100 basis point move. Whether we see a 75 basis point hike or a full 1% increase next week is not that relevant. The fact is that the Fed is intent on increasing interest rates until inflation is under control. Unfortunately, the benchmark will be above 3% after next week&#39;s meeting. With rates at such elevated levels, economic growth will weaken further, and there is no telling when the inflation problem may end.</p><h2>Uncertainty Ahead For Stocks</h2><p>There is increased uncertainty surrounding inflation, growth, Fed tightening, the consumer, recession, corporate earnings, and much more. Typically, I would say that the stock market will climb the wall of worry, but this wall of worry may be too high to climb.</p><p>One of the most troubling factors is that we don&#39;t know how deep the downturn will cut into corporate results. We already see declining revenues, worsening margins, and fewer profits at major corporations. However, these declines could continue, and future downward earnings revisions could persist. Additionally, valuations remain relatively high, and this dynamic could mean lower stock prices before this bear market gets sorted out.</p><h2>The Valuation Dynamic</h2><p><b>The Shiller P/E Ratio</b></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/32d6272d7dbe21608d8468cf653f5ad0\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"301\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Shiller P/E ratio(multpl.com)</p><p>We see the Shiller P/E coming down lately, but the drop has just begun. We can see that once the Shiller P/E drops, it rarely stops until a relatively low has been achieved. We should see the CAPE P/E ratio decline as the economy weakens, earnings decrease, and valuations come down. A reasonably conservative target could be a Shiller P/E ratio of approximately 20. While the historical mean is only 17, the market has become accustomed to higher P/E ratio valuations in recent years. Therefore, we may see increased buy interest around the 20 level, if the SPX doesn&#39;t overshoot to the downside. A decline to a 20 Shiller P/E ratio would equate to an approximately 28% drop from current levels, roughly coinciding with the 2,800 level in the S&amp;P 500. Therefore, my ultimate bottom in the S&amp;P 500 target remains at 3,000. However, a likelier scenario is that the S&P will make a lower low, dropping the SPX down into the 3,400-3,000 range next.What Do Jackson Hole And Inflation Have In Common?At Jackson Hole, we learned just how intent the Fed is on battling inflation and how bearish this phenomenon is for the stock market. I wrote about the Fed's bearish symposium several weeks ago. The key takeaway from Chair Powell's speech is that inflation is much more persistent and challenging to deal with than previously expected. The Fed must do much more to lower inflation. The dynamic of high-interest rates, slower growth, and a worsening labor market will bring substantial pain to households and businesses.Now, Let's Look At InflationCPI InflationCPI inflation(TradingEconomics.com )While inflation has decreased from the 9.1% reading, it remains remarkably high. Inflation is running hotter than we've seen in about 40 years now. The primary issue is that the Fed has been raising interest rates and implementing other tightening measures like QT, but we're seeing a minimal effect on inflation. Therefore, the Fed needs to do more. However, more tightening will further constrict economic growth and decrease consumer confidence. Additionally, higher inflation, lower growth, and worsening spending negatively impact corporate profits and should lead to more pain as we advance.Don't Fight The FedWise people have told me, \"you don't fight the Fed.\" You don't want to fight the Fed when the central bank is easing. We saw ultra-loose monetary policy since the 2008 financial crisis, and stocks did great for much of that time. However, we are in a completely different economic environment now. As the Fed pulls liquidity out of markets, the cost of borrowing increases, growth slows, sentiment worsens, and risk assets deflate. Furthermore, we've underestimated the severity of the inflation problem and the Fed's commitment to making it \"go away.\"Rate ProbabilitiesFed Watch(CMEGroup.com )Just one month ago, the market expected a 50 basis point hike at the upcoming Fed meeting. There is about a 25% probability that we may see a 100 basis point move. Whether we see a 75 basis point hike or a full 1% increase next week is not that relevant. The fact is that the Fed is intent on increasing interest rates until inflation is under control. Unfortunately, the benchmark will be above 3% after next week's meeting. With rates at such elevated levels, economic growth will weaken further, and there is no telling when the inflation problem may end.Uncertainty Ahead For StocksThere is increased uncertainty surrounding inflation, growth, Fed tightening, the consumer, recession, corporate earnings, and much more. Typically, I would say that the stock market will climb the wall of worry, but this wall of worry may be too high to climb.One of the most troubling factors is that we don't know how deep the downturn will cut into corporate results. We already see declining revenues, worsening margins, and fewer profits at major corporations. However, these declines could continue, and future downward earnings revisions could persist. Additionally, valuations remain relatively high, and this dynamic could mean lower stock prices before this bear market gets sorted out.The Valuation DynamicThe Shiller P/E RatioShiller P/E ratio(multpl.com)We see the Shiller P/E coming down lately, but the drop has just begun. We can see that once the Shiller P/E drops, it rarely stops until a relatively low has been achieved. We should see the CAPE P/E ratio decline as the economy weakens, earnings decrease, and valuations come down. A reasonably conservative target could be a Shiller P/E ratio of approximately 20. While the historical mean is only 17, the market has become accustomed to higher P/E ratio valuations in recent years. Therefore, we may see increased buy interest around the 20 level, if the SPX doesn't overshoot to the downside. A decline to a 20 Shiller P/E ratio would equate to an approximately 28% drop from current levels, roughly coinciding with the 2,800 level in the S&P 500. Therefore, my ultimate bottom in the S&P 500 target remains at 3,000.
