regulation.\nHuffman testified that Reddit's moderation mechanism makes it particularly good at weeding out bad information.\nHe also said that financial advice from Reddit users may actually be more reliable than advice from traditional media because it is vetted by the community.\n\nTestifying before Congress on Thursday, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman defended the role Reddit played in the January surge ofGameStopshares.\nHuffman told members of the House Financial Services Committee at ahearingon Thursday that Redditdid not detect any significant activity driven by bots or foreign actorson the WallStreetBets subreddit. Users in the online community helped spark abuying frenzylast month for highly-shorted stocks like GameStop andAMC.\nAs retail traders continued to buy once-undesirable stocks, lawmakers and media observers raised questions about who was really behind the posts driving the trading and how such a mechanism could be manipulated.\nHuffman testified that Reddit’s moderation mechanism makes it particularly good at weeding out bad information. The site allows users to vote comments up or down to increase or decrease their visibility. Moderators of different communities help enforce the rules in their corners of the platform. Huffman said Reddit has invested heavily into the voting system and that the WallStreetBets moderators have done an “excellent job.”\n“Our userbase is exceptionally good at sniffing out untruths, misinformation, fake stories, both within this community and Reddit at large,” Huffman said. “In order for any piece of content to be successful on Reddit, it has to be accepted by that community and receive the same amount of votes that anything else would.”\nWhile users don’t need to use their real identities, Huffman said asking them to do so would not necessarily make the site safer.\n“Other platforms have real identity and it doesn’t do anything to improve their behavior,” he said.\nFinancial advice from Reddit users may actually be more reliable than advice from traditional media, Huffman suggested.\n“People can say, in fact they do on television all the time, encourage people to make what I would call bad investment decisions,” Huffman said. “On Reddit, I think, the investment advice is actually probably among the best because it has to be accepted by many thousands of people before getting that sort of visibility.”\nReddit is largely protected from legal responsibility for their users’ posts through a law known asSection 230 of the Communications Decency Act. The legislation shields online platforms from liability for users’ posts and also allows them to freely moderate or remove content as they see fit. The news of the investments sent the shares of those three companies up in after-market trading.</p><p>The Apple stake reduction left Berkshire with a holding valued at about $120 billion at the end of 2020, according to another&nbsp;filing. The iPhone maker remains Berkshire’s biggest single stock holding.</p><p>Buffett and his investment deputies, Todd Combs and Ted Weschler, reshaped the portfolio over the last year as the coronavirus pandemic struck the U.S. The company was heavily invested in the banking sector, which has done well in the pandemic but is exposed to consumer finances and commercial real estate. The conglomerate has spent recent months lightening up on some of those lenders, while maintaining bets on firms such as Bank of America Corp.</p><p>Berkshire cut a few bank holdings, exiting JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co., PNC Financial Services Group Inc. and M&amp;T Bank Corp. while slashing its Wells Fargo &amp; Co. stake by 59%. The company also shifted recent bets on drugmakers by increasing a stake in Merck &amp; Co Inc., Abbvie Inc. and Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. It ended a recent investment in Pfizer Inc.</p><p>Berkshire&nbsp;exited&nbsp;a bet on Barrick Gold Corp. The investment was a surprise when it was revealed last year, given Buffett’s years of chiding the precious metal. The company also trimmed an investment in General Motors Co., cutting that holding to a stake valued at roughly $3 billion at the end of the fourth quarter.</p><p>Some of the new stakes were sizable. Berkshire held an investment in Chevron valued at nearly $4.1 billion at the end of 2020, while its Marsh &amp; McLennan bet was valued at $499 million. Berkshire accumulated a $8.6 billion stake in Verizon, a company that it had previously bet on but cut in 2019.</p><p>Verizon stock was up roughly 2.7% to $55.59 at 6:03 p.m. in New York, while Chevron gained 2.4%.
