The large-cap benchmark is down 21.1% from its record finish on Jan. 3. The index earlier this month first ended more than 20% below that early January record, confirming that the pandemic bull market -- as widely defined -- had ended on Jan. 3, marking the start of a bear.</p><p>The S&amp;P 500 has bounced around 3.2% off its 2022 low close of 3,666.77 set on June 16.</p><p>Read:These 10 stocks in the S&amp;P 500 have lost $4.1 trillion of investors&#39; money during the first half of 2022</p><p>Data compiled by Dow Jones Market Data shows that the S&amp;P 500 has bounced back after past first-half falls of 15% or more. The sample size, however, is small, with only five instances going back to 1932 (see table below).</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/35eaa5fc92d1e15ba08af1ec94393bc4\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"445\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/>The S&amp;P 500 did rise in each of those instances, with an average rise of 23.66% and a median rise of 15.25%.</p><p>Investors, however, may also want to pay attention to metrics around bear markets, particularly with the will-it-or-won&#39;t-it speculation around whether the Federal Reserve&#39;s aggressive tightening agenda will sink the economy into recession.</p><p>Indeed, an analysis by Wells Fargo Investment Institute found that recessions accompanied by a recession, on average, lasted 20 months and produced a negative 37.8% return. Bear markets outside a recession lasted 6 months on average -- nearly the length of the current episode -- and saw an average return of -28.9%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average  fell 15.3% through Thursday, its worst first half since a 23.2% drop in 1962.</p><p>As the table below shows, the second-half performance for the blue-chip gauge after first-half declines of 10% or more are variable. The most recent incident, in 2008 during the worst of the financial crisis, saw the Dow drop another 22.68% in the second half of the year.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a201b68c690ea36110bd9080287089b9\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"915\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/>In the 15 instances, the Dow rallied in the second half two-thirds of the time, producing an average second-half rise of 4.45% and a median gain just shy of 7%.</p><p>The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite  dropped more than 29% for the first half, its largest such drop on record. The bearish reading was the sixth highest since the survey started in 1987. At the beginning of June, just 37% were bearish while 32% remained bullish.</p><p>The fear of a lower market is largely due to anticipations of weaker earnings in the coming months. According to Bank of America’s global fund manager survey in June, 72% of investors expect global profits to worsen over the next 12 months, up 6 percentage points from May and the highest level since September 2008. Investors are telling companies to “play it safe” and strengthen their balance sheets, rather than increase capital expenditure or deliver share buybacks.</p><p>“The bear market will not be over until recession arrives or the risk of one is extinguished,” wrote Morgan Stanley chief U.S. equity strategist Mike Wilson last week. A full-fledged recession could push the S&amp;P 500 to bottom near 2900, or more than 23% below its current level, according to Wilson.</p><p>Other Wall Street giants have similar expectations. Goldman Sachs strategists said stocks are only pricing in a modest recession, leaving them open to a further worsening in expectations. Bank of America said the S&amp;P 500 could bottom as low as 3000 in a worst-case scenario.</p><p>If there is any silver lining to these dim expectations, it’s worth noting that investor sentiment is often a contrarian indicator. Historically, unusually bearish sentiment—a sign of fearand cautious behaviors—tends to be followed by above-average market returns, while overly bullish sentiment—a sign of greed and risk taking—is often followed by below-average returns.</p><p>Indeed, during previous years when the S&amp;P 500 was down at least 15% at the midway point of the year, the index has finished higher in the final six months every single time, with an average return of nearly 24%. “Although most investors probably don’t feel like that is possible in 2022, just remember history says a surprise bullish move is possible,” wrote LPL Financial chief market strategist Ryan Detrick last week.</p><p>Citianalysts, for one, believe the second half of the year could bring “low double digit upside” gains in the S&amp;P 500. The market has mostly priced in the Fed’s planned rate hikes and their effects on stock valuations, wrote the analysts in a research note last week. tough to choose between two REITs that seem to be equally good.</p><p>Take <b>Keppel DC REIT</b> (SGX: AJBU) and <b>Mapletree Industrial Trust</b> (SGX: ME8U), or MINT, for instance.</p><p>Both REITs have strong sponsors and diversified portfolios with long track records.</p><p>Keppel DC REIT owns 21 data centres across nine countries with assets under management (AUM) of S$3.5 billion.</p><p>MINT’s portfolio consists of 143 properties worth S$8.8 billion spread out over six property segments, of which data centres make up roughly 54% of the asset value.</p><p>We decided to place these two REITs side by side to see which looks more attractive as an investment.</p><p><b>Portfolio composition</b></p><p><img REIT owns just one type of specialised industrial asset – data centres.</p><p>This fact makes the REIT more vulnerable should any negative news impact the sector.</p><p>MINT, on the other hand, owns slightly more than half of its AUM in data centres while the rest is spread out among flatted factories, hi-tech buildings, and light industrial buildings.</p><p>This diversification is helpful as it income-focused investors, increased by 5.8% year on year.</p><p>Keppel DC REIT reported a muted performance with gross revenue and NPI falling by 0.9% and 1.4%, respectively.</p><p>DPU did manage to inch up 0.2% year on year but it fell short of what MINT had achieved.</p><p><b>Winner: MINT</b></p><p><b>Financial indicators</b></p><p><img
