No need to remind anyone back then of droughts, wildfires, or Covid-19 surges that are unfortunate features of the steamy season this year.</p>\n<p>But the coming of August also means entering what historically has been the most treacherous stretch of the year for stocks, according to data going back to 1928 compiled by Bank of America analyst Stephen Suttmeier. He finds that theS&amp;P 500index had a negative return averaging 0.03% in August, September, and October—the worst three-month span of the year for the big-cap benchmark. In fact, they constitute the only three-month period that averages in the red.</p>\n<p>August actually is bracketed by the best and worst months of the year, he adds in a research note. July averages a 1.58% return on the S&amp;P 500, with positive results 59.1% of the time, while September averages a negative 1.03%, ending in the plus column less than half of the time, or 45%.</p>\n<p>This July did even better than the norm, with the S&amp;P 500 gaining 2.27%. It also was the sixth consecutive up month for the index—the longest positive streak since September 2018, according to Dow Jones’ statistical mavens. During that period, its cumulative advance was 18.34%.</p>\n<p>August’s record is in between, with an average 0.70% S&amp;P 500 return and positive results 58.1% of the time, marking a transition from the “summer rip” to the “fall dip.”</p>\n<p>Not surprisingly, the laggard returns of the August-October period are accompanied by an uptick in volatility, Suttmeier finds. Based on records going back to 1992, theCboe Volatility Index,or VIX, has often seen spikes during those months, following relatively subdued volatility in the April-July period.</p>\n<p>Past isn’t necessarily prologue, but if it is, the timing of the initial public offering byRobinhood Markets(ticker: HOOD) might prove propitious, if the stock market does have its typical seasonal rough patch. The online broker, whose putative mission is to open investing to novices supposedly ignored by established outfits, sold 55 million shares at $38 on Thursday. In the process, it provided a valuable lesson to all those who got in on the IPO: Buy low and sell high.</p>\n<p>The company evidently fulfilled the latter imperative, selling its shares high, even though they were priced at the low end of the expected $38-$42 range. Their price sank 8.4% on their first day of trading, although they recouped a bit on Friday. By week’s end, buyers of Robinhood’s IPO who held were down 7.5%.</p>\n<p>Among those who sold high were the company’s co-founders, CEO Vladimir Tenev and Chief Creative Officer Baiju Bhatt, who each offloaded 1.25 million shares in the IPO. As my illustrious predecessor, Alan Abelson, liked to observe, there are many good reasons to sell a stock, but expecting it to go up isn’t one of them. That has never been more true, given the ability of rich owners to monetize their assets by borrowing against them cheaply, and without incurring capital-gains taxes.</p>\n<p>To be sure, Tenev and Bhatt still have significant stakes in Robinhood. Asour colleague Avi Salzman reported, these were worth $2.5 billion at the initial offering price, and Tenev and Bhatt retain voting control. The two also could receive awards of shares worth as much as $6.7 billion for Tenev and $4 billion for Bhatt, if the stock hits $300, or nearly the proverbial ten-bagger from here.</p>\n<p>But in a blow against income inequality, the potential billionaire pair took symbolic pay cuts, to $34,248, the average annual wage of American workers. As the comedian Yakov Smirnoff likes to say, “What a country!”</p>\n<p>How those workers are faring will be a subject of the monthly employment report slated for release this coming Friday.</p>\n<p>Economists’ forecasts for nonfarm payrolls center around a gain of 900,000. Jefferies economists Aneta Markowska and Thomas Simons estimate that the increase could top the long-anticipated one million mark; they forecast 1.2 million.</p>\n<p>Markowska and Simons think the expiration of supplemental unemployment benefits in some states will boost the labor supply, although that is a matter of significant debate. No need to remind anyone back then of droughts, wildfires, or Covid-19 surges that are unfortunate features of the steamy season this year.\nBut the coming of August also means entering what historically has been the most treacherous stretch of the year for stocks, according to data going back to 1928 compiled by Bank of America analyst Stephen Suttmeier. He finds that theS&P 500index had a negative return averaging 0.03% in August, September, and October—the worst three-month span of the year for the big-cap benchmark. In fact, they constitute the only three-month period that averages in the red.\nAugust actually is bracketed by the best and worst months of the year, he adds in a research note. July averages a 1.58% return on the S&P 500, with positive results 59.1% of the time, while September averages a negative 1.03%, ending in the plus column less than half of the time, or 45%.\nThis July did even better than the norm, with the S&P 500 gaining 2.27%. It also was the sixth consecutive up month for the index—the longest positive streak since September 2018, according to Dow Jones’ statistical mavens. During that period, its cumulative advance was 18.34%.\nAugust’s record is in between, with an average 0.70% S&P 500 return and positive results 58.1% of the time, marking a transition from the “summer rip” to the “fall dip.”\nNot surprisingly, the laggard returns of the August-October period are accompanied by an uptick in volatility, Suttmeier finds. Based on records going back to 1992, theCboe Volatility Index,or VIX, has often seen spikes during those months, following relatively subdued volatility in the April-July period.\nPast isn’t necessarily prologue, but if it is, the timing of the initial public offering byRobinhood Markets(ticker: HOOD) might prove propitious, if the stock market does have its typical seasonal rough patch. The online broker, whose putative mission is to open investing to novices supposedly ignored by established outfits, sold 55 million shares at $38 on Thursday. In the process, it provided a valuable lesson to all those who got in on the IPO: Buy low and sell high.\nThe company evidently fulfilled the latter imperative, selling its shares high, even though they were priced at the low end of the expected $38-$42 range. Their price sank 8.4% on their first day of trading, although they recouped a bit on Friday. By week’s end, buyers of Robinhood’s IPO who held were down 7.5%.\nAmong those who sold high were the company’s co-founders, CEO Vladimir Tenev and Chief Creative Officer Baiju Bhatt, who each offloaded 1.25 million shares in the IPO. As my illustrious predecessor, Alan Abelson, liked to observe, there are many good reasons to sell a stock, but expecting it to go up isn’t one of them. That has never been more true, given the ability of rich owners to monetize their assets by borrowing against them cheaply, and without incurring capital-gains taxes.\nTo be sure, Tenev and Bhatt still have significant stakes in Robinhood. Asour colleague Avi Salzman reported, these were worth $2.5 billion at the initial offering price, and Tenev and Bhatt retain voting control. The two also could receive awards of shares worth as much as $6.7 billion for Tenev and $4 billion for Bhatt, if the stock hits $300, or nearly the proverbial ten-bagger from here.\nBut in a blow against income inequality, the potential billionaire pair took symbolic pay cuts, to $34,248, the average annual wage of American workers. As the comedian Yakov Smirnoff likes to say, “What a country!”\nHow those workers are faring will be a subject of the monthly employment report slated for release this coming Friday.\nEconomists’ forecasts for nonfarm payrolls center around a gain of 900,000. Jefferies economists Aneta Markowska and Thomas Simons estimate that the increase could top the long-anticipated one million mark; they forecast 1.2 million.\nMarkowska and Simons think the expiration of supplemental unemployment benefits in some states will boost the labor supply, although that is a matter of significant debate. The $2.8 billion fund beats its Russell 1000 Growth&nbsp;Index by over 6 percentage points annualized over the past three and five years, according toMorningstar. It outperforms its large-growth category by 8.6 percentage points annualized over five years. It has a reasonable 0.65% expense ratio.</p>\n<p>The fund is co-managed by Prabha Ram, who I recently caught up with. Raised in India, Ram came to the U.S. as a teaching assistant at the University of Maine, where she earned a master’s degree in computer science. She went on to receive an MBA at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Ram and three other portfolio managers have led this fund since 2016.</p>\n<p>Here are the five key takeaways, with examples of specific stocks.</p>\n<p><b>1. Own companies that can “land and expand” in big markets</b></p>\n<p>Even though we’ve been in the digital age for years, many small companies still do much of their business on paper. Bill.comBILLwants to change that. The company was founded by CEO René Lacerte, who in the late 1990s started the online payroll company PayCycle, which was acquired by Intuit.</p>\n<p>Bill.com helps small companies go digital in accounts payable and receivable payments. But that’s just the start. Once inside a company, Bill.com digitizes other areas like cash and expense account management.</p>\n<p>Bill.com “lands and expands” at clients, but it also uses their business partners to create a network of leads.</p>\n<p>“Every vendor is a network member, even if it is not a Bill.com customer,” says Ram. This network has about 2.5 million members. Bill.com also gets prospects from its partners, including Bank of AmericaBAC,JPMorgan ChaseJPMand American ExpressAXP.Sales grew 45% in the first quarter.</p>\n<p>Founder-run companies such as this one are worth considering because they often outperform.</p>\n<p><b>2. Seek out innovators</b></p>\n<p>Ram’s portfolio contains obvious innovators, including TeslaTSLA,Amazon.comAMZNand AlphabetGOOGL,her top three positions. Let’s look beyond technology — to beer.</p>\n<p>Back in the 1980s, Boston Beer founder Jim Koch began taking share from beer giants Anheuser-Busch InBevBUDand HeinekenHEINYby rolling out successful “craft” brews, starting with Samuel Adams. Koch helped invent the craft brew category, essentially taking the country back to pre-Prohibition days when the U.S. had hundreds of regional breweries making more flavorful beers for local tastes.</p>\n<p>Boston Beer stock did very well, but then it stalled during 2015-2017 as beer sales overall went flat. In response, Boston Beer helped put a new category on the map — with its Truly Hard Seltzer brand rolled out in 2106. It remains one of the leading hard seltzers.</p>\n<p>“We were drawn to the company because of its history of innovation,” says Ram, referring to her fund’s early position from the second quarter of 2016. “The stock was doing poorly because the beer market was flattening, but they were coming up with Truly Hard Seltzer. Truly was more successful than we anticipated. It created a new category.”</p>\n<p>This penchant for innovation at Boston Beer has helped keep Ram’s fund in the name. Other successful Boston Beer brands include Twisted Tea, Angry Orchard and Dogfish Head.</p>\n<p>A key takeaway here is that to find innovative companies, look for the ones led by people who have demonstrated a knack for innovation in the past. Innovative managers tend to keep on innovating. Boston Beer continually tests new seltzers, beers, hard ciders, distilled spirits and other drinks. Shareholders are betting they will come through again.</p>\n<p>They’ll need the help. Boston Beer shares fell 20% on July 23 because so many competitors entered the hard cider niche. Sales grew 33% but net income fell 1.6% as the company jacked up advertising costs to try to combat the competition. The company slashed estimates for the year on an expected slowdown in sales growth.</p>\n<p>But don’t count out this innovator yet.</p>\n<p>“We recently announced plans to develop new innovative beverages with&nbsp;Beam Suntory&nbsp;that we are planning to launch in early 2022,” Boston Beer’s Koch said. Beam Suntory&nbsp;sells Jim Beam whiskey and other brands of spirits. “We believe these new beverages will further demonstrate our ability to innovate and grow our business as drinker preferences evolve.”</p>\n<p><b>3. Look for companies that can create and dominate a niche</b></p>\n<p>For years as the gig economy emerged, the big credit card companies didn’t really care that much if the local yoga instructor could accept payments with a credit card. SquareSQrecognized this as an opportunity. So it launched its card payment device business in 2009. Since then, it has grown by taking on larger customers, and expanding into new lines of business in financial services such as cash management, debit cards loans and tax filing. Transaction-based revenue grew 27% in the first quarter, and subscription and services revenue soared 88%.</p>\n<p>This is a great example of a company that created a business niche. But it’s also a “land and expand” company because it grows by offering customers new services. Both qualities help companies maintain the competitive advantage Ram likes see in investments.</p>\n<p><b>4. Buy companies in the early stages of rapid growth</b></p>\n<p>One way to find these is to identify companies developing products that will transform an entire industry. Ram thinks that is the case with Alnylam PharmaceuticalsALNY.It’s developing novel therapies base on a technique called RNA interference (RNAi). Inside the body, messenger RNA (mRNA) encodes proteins we need, based on signals from RNA. Sometimes mRNA gets the signals crossed, and it encodes flawed proteins. This causes diseases.</p>\n<p>Alnylam has developed a way to tweak the RNAi pathway to silence the flawed signaling and block the creation of disease-causing proteins. So far, Alnylam has four approved RNAi-based medicines that treat rare hereditary diseases. The company has a dozen other therapies in clinical studies, including six in late-stage development.</p>\n<p>“This is a completely new area of therapeutics,” says Ram. “It is a platform of products that can treat a variety of conditions.”</p>\n<p><b>5. Hold stocks for the long term</b></p>\n<p>All of the names above are large positions in Ram’s fund, which tells me that Ram and her team think they have considerably more upside. If you buy any of them, though, remember you have to do so with a multi-year time horizon. That’s what Ram’s fund does. It has a low annual portfolio turnover of 27%. Seek out innovators\nRam’s portfolio contains obvious innovators, including TeslaTSLA,Amazon.comAMZNand AlphabetGOOGL,her top three positions. Let’s look beyond technology — to beer.\nBack in the 1980s, Boston Beer founder Jim Koch began taking share from beer giants Anheuser-Busch InBevBUDand HeinekenHEINYby rolling out successful “craft” brews, starting with Samuel Adams. Koch helped invent the craft brew category, essentially taking the country back to pre-Prohibition days when the U.S. had hundreds of regional breweries making more flavorful beers for local tastes.\nBoston Beer stock did very well, but then it stalled during 2015-2017 as beer sales overall went flat. In response, Boston Beer helped put a new category on the map — with its Truly Hard Seltzer brand rolled out in 2106. It remains one of the leading hard seltzers.\n“We were drawn to the company because of its history of innovation,” says Ram, referring to her fund’s early position from the second quarter of 2016. “The stock was doing poorly because the beer market was flattening, but they were coming up with Truly Hard Seltzer. Truly was more successful than we anticipated. It created a new category.”\nThis penchant for innovation at Boston Beer has helped keep Ram’s fund in the name. Other successful Boston Beer brands include Twisted Tea, Angry Orchard and Dogfish Head.\nA key takeaway here is that to find innovative companies, look for the ones led by people who have demonstrated a knack for innovation in the past. Innovative managers tend to keep on innovating. Boston Beer continually tests new seltzers, beers, hard ciders, distilled spirits and other drinks. Shareholders are betting they will come through again.\nThey’ll need the help. Boston Beer shares fell 20% on July 23 because so many competitors entered the hard cider niche. Sales grew 33% but net income fell 1.6% as the company jacked up advertising costs to try to combat the competition. The company slashed estimates for the year on an expected slowdown in sales growth.\nBut don’t count out this innovator yet.\n“We recently announced plans to develop new innovative beverages with Beam Suntory that we are planning to launch in early 2022,” Boston Beer’s Koch said. Beam Suntory sells Jim Beam whiskey and other brands of spirits. “We believe these new beverages will further demonstrate our ability to innovate and grow our business as drinker preferences evolve.”\n3. Look for companies that can create and dominate a niche\nFor years as the gig economy emerged, the big credit card companies didn’t really care that much if the local yoga instructor could accept payments with a credit card. SquareSQrecognized this as an opportunity. So it launched its card payment device business in 2009. Since then, it has grown by taking on larger customers, and expanding into new lines of business in financial services such as cash management, debit cards loans and tax filing. Transaction-based revenue grew 27% in the first quarter, and subscription and services revenue soared 88%.\nThis is a great example of a company that created a business niche. But it’s also a “land and expand” company because it grows by offering customers new services. Both qualities help companies maintain the competitive advantage Ram likes see in investments.\n4. Buy companies in the early stages of rapid growth\nOne way to find these is to identify companies developing products that will transform an entire industry. Ram thinks that is the case with Alnylam PharmaceuticalsALNY.It’s developing novel therapies base on a technique called RNA interference (RNAi). Inside the body, messenger RNA (mRNA) encodes proteins we need, based on signals from RNA. Sometimes mRNA gets the signals crossed, and it encodes flawed proteins. This causes diseases.\nAlnylam has developed a way to tweak the RNAi pathway to silence the flawed signaling and block the creation of disease-causing proteins. So far, Alnylam has four approved RNAi-based medicines that treat rare hereditary diseases. The company has a dozen other therapies in clinical studies, including six in late-stage development.\n“This is a completely new area of therapeutics,” says Ram. “It is a platform of products that can treat a variety of conditions.”\n5. Hold stocks for the long term\nAll of the names above are large positions in Ram’s fund, which tells me that Ram and her team think they have considerably more upside. If you buy any of them, though, remember you have to do so with a multi-year time horizon. That’s what Ram’s fund does. It has a low annual portfolio turnover of 27%. If the second half plays out as analysts currently expect, those five companies would collectively top $1.4 trillion in revenue this year, adding toa pile of profit during the pandemicthat could hit $500 billion.</p>\n<p>All five companies revealed second-quarter financial results in the past three days, reporting a combined grand total — with the emphasis on “grand” — of $75.8 billion in profit and $331.6 billion in revenue. Big Tech blew away expectations and previous performance for the first half, continuing to find phenomenal success amid a global pandemic that has driven more commerce and consumption online.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2c696a56355e7161319cd8da2d1c4e75\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"495\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Growth for the second half of the year is currently expected to decelerate overall, but the companies’ revenue is still expected to beat both the first half’s total and last year’s second half by more than $100 billion. Estimates will change as analysts update their models, but Wall Street was looking for revenue of about $760.5 billion in the second half, based on FactSet estimates, a jump of about 21% from the year before, after 38% growth in the first half.</p>\n<p>“There will be some moderation [in the second half], but it’s not like growth is falling off the staircase,” Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives told MarketWatch, adding that “digital transformation for the consumer and the enterprise is accelerating rather than moderating.”</p>\n<p>If those projections come true, or anywhere close, the numbers would truly be staggering. The projected $1.41 trillion in revenue this year would be greater than the 2020 gross domestic product of Australia, the world’s 12th-largest economy according to World Bank figures, while profit would top $300 billion for the year and $500 billion for the two pandemic-affected calendar years of 2020 and 2021.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/56a33fbc7e8a7e1ab40b6d63a0b5a3ae\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"520\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Continued gains from Big Tech are essential to the market at this point. The five Big Tech companies comprised 24.9% of the entire <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/.SPX\">S&amp;P 500</a>’s&nbsp;market capitalization as of the end of Tuesday’s session, according to Dow Jones Market Data, after growing as a percentage of that index for years.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/46b008aa80b2b74a3dad2d97f03aeb90\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"495\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Big Tech is getting dangerously close to a mark that one investment advisor said to look out for.</p>\n<p>“Any time a sector gets to around 30% [of the S&amp;P], something bad happens and it will go back down,” said Brendan Connaughton, founder and managing partner of Catalyst Private Wealth. His examples: the 1930s industrial sector, oil and energy companies in the the 1970s, and when dot-com bubble burst more than 20 years ago.</p>\n<p>“Tech was over 30% of the S&amp;P [in the early 2000s] and we saw it blow up,” he said. “At some point, things get too weighted and they unwind themselves.”</p>\n<p>There are reasons to think that the current tech boom may have peakedwith this quarter’s results, andApple didn’t help with its expectations.Amazon’s sales growth seemed to stall in Thursday’s report, with Chief Financial Officer Brian Olsavsky divulging “some noticeable intra-quarter changes in our revenue run rate.” While Amazon’s AWS cloud business is still going strong, Olsavsky mentioned the impact of a gradual reopening from the pandemic on the company’s overall growth rate.</p>\n<p>“I think the impact of people getting vaccinated and getting out in the world, not only shopping offline, but also living life and getting out. It takes away from shopping time,” he said. “It’s a good phenomenon, and it’s great and we just have to appropriately gauge our run rate going forward.”</p>\n<p>We could see similar effects across the other companies, though&nbsp;<a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/MSFT\">Microsoft</a> appears to have few weaknesseswhilelargely escaping any regulatory scrutiny so far. Google and Facebook are benefiting from an explosion in online-ad prices, which also helped Amazon’s burgeoning ad business, but <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/PINS\">Pinterest, Inc.</a>’s&nbsp;results on Thursday suggested that users may actually be turning off their social-media apps to return to the real world. Facebook Chief Financial Officer David Wehnerwarned about decelerating revenue growth in the third and fourth quarter, “as we lap periods of increasingly strong growth,” thoughthat may just be his thing.</p>\n<p>Even without the same rapid growth rates, though, these companies have established themselves as powerhouses in important market sectors. They will continue to make astounding amounts of money from cloud computing, selling gadgets and services, and putting advertising wherever they can.</p>\n<p>“Amazon will show some moderation, as we are coming back to restaurants and malls and shops etc., but I think the Street has underestimated the digital transformation,” bullish analyst Ives said. “We think it is $2 trillion in spending over the next decade.”</p>\n<p>Big Tech stands to rake that cash in, but there will be a cost from regulators’ attention. Taking into account the 20% year-to-date gain for Berkshire's Class A shares (BRK.A), shareholders have seen Buffett generate aggregate returns of almost 3,400,000% in 56 years.</p>\n<p>Although Berkshire Hathaway has a relatively large portfolio filled with four dozen different securities, Buffett has never been a big fan of diversification. As a result, only a small number of holdings comprise the bulk of Berkshire Hathaway's $206.4 billion in unrealized gains, as of this past weekend.</p>\n<p>Based on the cost basis of Berkshire's major holdings (outlined in the company's 2020 annual shareholder letter), the following five stocks have netted Buffett $181.1 billion in combined unrealized gains (about 88% of all current unrealized profit), not including dividends paid.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d28b3a8823057ce2bc2495cefe7ee3ff\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett is all smiles with his company sitting on over $206 billion in unrealized gains. Image source: The Motley Fool.</p>\n<h3>Apple: $101,764,676,001 in unrealized gains</h3>\n<p>Easily the best investment of Buffett's tenured career is <b>Apple</b> (NASDAQ:AAPL). Even after modestly paring down his company's stake in the tech kingpin, Berkshire Hathaway still owns 907,559,761 shares at a cost basis of $34.26 a share. With Apple closing last week at $146.39 a share, the Oracle of Omaha and his team are sitting on close to a $102 billion unrealized gain.</p>\n<p>Investors certainly shouldn't look for this stake to be reduced any further anytime soon. That's because Buffett views Apple as Berkshire Hathaway's \"third business.\" It's a globally recognized brand with an exceptionally loyal following, as evidenced by the mammoth lines outside of its stores anytime a new product hits the shelves. And, as you're probably aware, the iPhone is the dominant smartphone by market share in the U.S.</p>\n<p>In addition to Apple being a product innovation juggernaut, CEO Tim Cook is overseeing a steady transition toward services. By emphasizing various subscription-based platforms, Apple can reduce some of the revenue lumpiness associated with tech replacement cycles and likely boost its operating margins.</p>\n<p>A final reason Buffett isn't bailing on Apple is the company's generous shareholder return program. Though some of you might be scratching your head given that Apple's dividend yield is \"only\" 0.6%, the $0.88 base annual payout is closer to 2.6% of Berkshire Hathaway's cost basis. Tack on Apple's aggressive share repurchase program and you have a very shareholder-friendly company.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/44a30c4dfd6886a29e22d3c6558c3e56\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Image source: Getty Images.</p>\n<h3>Bank of America: $24,530,235,143 in unrealized gains</h3>\n<p>There's no industry on the planet Buffett loves more than bank stocks -- and there's no bank stock Buffett favors more than <b>Bank of America</b> (NYSE:BAC). Berkshire Hathaway owns over 1.03 billion shares of BofA with a cost basis of $14.17 a share. This works out to an unrealized gain of just over $24.5 billion, based on where BofA shares closed this past Friday, July 16.</p>\n<p>Buffett has always been a big fan of playing the economic numbers game, which is exactly what he's doing with Bank of America. Since the U.S. economy spends a disproportionate amount of time expanding, relative to contracting, bank stocks like BofA should benefit from stronger loan origination and higher net interest income. The Oracle of Omaha is fully aware that recessions are a natural part of the economic cycle, but he fully understands that the long term strongly favors optimists.</p>\n<p>More specific to the business, BofA stands to benefit from eventual interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve. Bank of America is the most interest-sensitive of all the big banks, with the company noting in the June-ended quarter that a 100 basis point parallel shift in the interest rate yield curve would net it an extra $8 billion in net interest income over the next 12 months.</p>\n<p>With BofA pushing digitization initiatives and bolstering its dividend program, it's far likelier that Buffett ups his stake in the company than sells a single share.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ed3e6a16841306014bf0cfc3b1697b23\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Image source: American <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/EXPR\">Express</a>.</p>\n<h2>American Express: $24,488,160,264 in unrealized gains</h2>\n<p>Whereas the gains racked up in Apple and BofA have come within the past couple of years, the nearly $24.5 billion in unrealized gains in credit services behemoth <b>American Express</b> (NYSE:AXP) have been built up over the past 28 years. With a cost basis of right around $8.49 a share, Buffett's patience has paid off in a big way with AmEx.</p>\n<p>Similar to Bank of America, American Express is a cyclical company that benefits from the aforementioned numbers game. If the U.S. and global economy are expanding, consumers and businesses are more likely to spend more, thereby helping boost payment processing revenue and profits. Keep in mind, though, AmEx is a double dipper. In addition to processing payments, it's also a credit services provider. This means it can generate growing amounts of fee revenue and interest income during long-winded periods of expansion.</p>\n<p>Another facet to AmEx's success is the company's ability to bring in affluent clientele. The well-to-do are far less inclined to alter their spending habits when minor economic disruptions rear their heads. As a result, AmEx isn't as likely to be hurt by credit delinquencies as some of its lending peers.</p>\n<p>With Berkshire Hathaway an American Express shareholder since 1993, I don't foresee Buffett or his team selling shares anytime soon.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/299023e9f7694c143fc3162fbb154afa\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"467\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Image source: Coca-Cola.</p>\n<h3>Coca-Cola: $21,262,000,000 in unrealized gains</h3>\n<p>Speaking of tenured holdings, no stock has been a fixture in Buffett's portfolio for longer than beverage giant <b>Coca-Cola</b> (NYSE:KO). With a cost basis of a fraction under $3.25 a share, Buffett and his team have piled up almost $21.3 billion in unrealized gains by owning Coca-Cola since 1988.</p>\n<p>Like Apple, we're talking about a company with insanely strong branding and brand recognition. Coke products are sold in all but two countries worldwide (Cuba and North Korea), and it has more than 20 brands in its product portfolio generating at least $1 billion in annual sales. Coca-Cola enjoys the best of both worlds, with 20% of the developed market cold beverage share (i.e., highly predictable cash flow) and 10% of emerging market cold beverage share, which represents a higher-growth opportunity over the long run.</p>\n<p>Beyond geographic diversity, marketing is a big reason for Coca-Cola's success. The company has not been shy about turning to social media and well-known ambassadors to represent its brand, and it has clear holiday tie-ins that go back decades.</p>\n<p>Considering that Berkshire Hathaway is netting almost a 52% annual dividend yield based on its original cost basis for Coca-Cola, there's absolutely no incentive to sell this position.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0405d7e87cf0321a7d9113d036c164a4\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Image source: Getty Images.</p>\n<h3>Moody's: $9,076,258,024 in unrealized gains</h3>\n<p>While Apple singlehandedly takes the crown for generating the highest unrealized return in nominal dollars for the Oracle of Omaha, credit ratings agency <b>Moody's</b> (NYSE:MCO) might well be Warren Buffett's greatest investment on a percentage basis of all time. Berkshire's cost basis is $10.05 a share following Moody's spinoff from Dun &amp; Bradstreet in 2000. Moody's closed this past week at almost $378 a share -- good enough for a 3,661% return and nearly $9.1 billion unrealized gain.</p>\n<p>One thing keeping Moody's busy is historically low lending rates. With the Federal Reserve standing pat for as long as possible on interest rates, businesses haven't been shy about issuing debt to hire, acquire, innovate, or even buy back stock, as in Apple's case. With so much corporate debt issued, Moody's has been active evaluating the debt landscape.</p>\n<p>Equally exciting has been the generally heightened levels of market volatility and economic uncertainty since the beginning of 2020. Though Moody's is best known for its credit ratings operations, its fastest-growing segment tends to be analytics. As long as deep levels of uncertainty exist, Moody's Analytics has double-digit annual growth potential.</p>\n<p>As with Coke, Buffett's patience has resulted in an insanely high yield on cost with Moody's. Since taking the helm of Berkshire Hathaway in 1965, the Oracle of Omaha has led his stock to an average annual return of 20%. Taking into account the 20% year-to-date gain for Berkshire's Class A shares (BRK.A), shareholders have seen Buffett generate aggregate returns of almost 3,400,000% in 56 years.\nAlthough Berkshire Hathaway has a relatively large portfolio filled with four dozen different securities, Buffett has never been a big fan of diversification. As a result, only a small number of holdings comprise the bulk of Berkshire Hathaway's $206.4 billion in unrealized gains, as of this past weekend.\nBased on the cost basis of Berkshire's major holdings (outlined in the company's 2020 annual shareholder letter), the following five stocks have netted Buffett $181.1 billion in combined unrealized gains (about 88% of all current unrealized profit), not including dividends paid.\n\nBerkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett is all smiles with his company sitting on over $206 billion in unrealized gains. Image source: The Motley Fool.\nApple: $101,764,676,001 in unrealized gains\nEasily the best investment of Buffett's tenured career is Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL). Even after modestly paring down his company's stake in the tech kingpin, Berkshire Hathaway still owns 907,559,761 shares at a cost basis of $34.26 a share. With Apple closing last week at $146.39 a share, the Oracle of Omaha and his team are sitting on close to a $102 billion unrealized gain.\nInvestors certainly shouldn't look for this stake to be reduced any further anytime soon. That's because Buffett views Apple as Berkshire Hathaway's \"third business.\" It's a globally recognized brand with an exceptionally loyal following, as evidenced by the mammoth lines outside of its stores anytime a new product hits the shelves. And, as you're probably aware, the iPhone is the dominant smartphone by market share in the U.S.\nIn addition to Apple being a product innovation juggernaut, CEO Tim Cook is overseeing a steady transition toward services. By emphasizing various subscription-based platforms, Apple can reduce some of the revenue lumpiness associated with tech replacement cycles and likely boost its operating margins.\nA final reason Buffett isn't bailing on Apple is the company's generous shareholder return program. Though some of you might be scratching your head given that Apple's dividend yield is \"only\" 0.6%, the $0.88 base annual payout is closer to 2.6% of Berkshire Hathaway's cost basis. Tack on Apple's aggressive share repurchase program and you have a very shareholder-friendly company.\n\nImage source: Getty Images.\nBank of America: $24,530,235,143 in unrealized gains\nThere's no industry on the planet Buffett loves more than bank stocks -- and there's no bank stock Buffett favors more than Bank of America (NYSE:BAC). Berkshire Hathaway owns over 1.03 billion shares of BofA with a cost basis of $14.17 a share. This works out to an unrealized gain of just over $24.5 billion, based on where BofA shares closed this past Friday, July 16.\nBuffett has always been a big fan of playing the economic numbers game, which is exactly what he's doing with Bank of America. Since the U.S. economy spends a disproportionate amount of time expanding, relative to contracting, bank stocks like BofA should benefit from stronger loan origination and higher net interest income. The Oracle of Omaha is fully aware that recessions are a natural part of the economic cycle, but he fully understands that the long term strongly favors optimists.\nMore specific to the business, BofA stands to benefit from eventual interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve. Bank of America is the most interest-sensitive of all the big banks, with the company noting in the June-ended quarter that a 100 basis point parallel shift in the interest rate yield curve would net it an extra $8 billion in net interest income over the next 12 months.\nWith BofA pushing digitization initiatives and bolstering its dividend program, it's far likelier that Buffett ups his stake in the company than sells a single share.\n\nImage source: American Express.\nAmerican Express: $24,488,160,264 in unrealized gains\nWhereas the gains racked up in Apple and BofA have come within the past couple of years, the nearly $24.5 billion in unrealized gains in credit services behemoth American Express (NYSE:AXP) have been built up over the past 28 years. With a cost basis of right around $8.49 a share, Buffett's patience has paid off in a big way with AmEx.\nSimilar to Bank of America, American Express is a cyclical company that benefits from the aforementioned numbers game. If the U.S. and global economy are expanding, consumers and businesses are more likely to spend more, thereby helping boost payment processing revenue and profits. Keep in mind, though, AmEx is a double dipper. In addition to processing payments, it's also a credit services provider. This means it can generate growing amounts of fee revenue and interest income during long-winded periods of expansion.\nAnother facet to AmEx's success is the company's ability to bring in affluent clientele. The well-to-do are far less inclined to alter their spending habits when minor economic disruptions rear their heads. As a result, AmEx isn't as likely to be hurt by credit delinquencies as some of its lending peers.\nWith Berkshire Hathaway an American Express shareholder since 1993, I don't foresee Buffett or his team selling shares anytime soon.\n\nImage source: Coca-Cola.\nCoca-Cola: $21,262,000,000 in unrealized gains\nSpeaking of tenured holdings, no stock has been a fixture in Buffett's portfolio for longer than beverage giant Coca-Cola (NYSE:KO). With a cost basis of a fraction under $3.25 a share, Buffett and his team have piled up almost $21.3 billion in unrealized gains by owning Coca-Cola since 1988.\nLike Apple, we're talking about a company with insanely strong branding and brand recognition. Coke products are sold in all but two countries worldwide (Cuba and North Korea), and it has more than 20 brands in its product portfolio generating at least $1 billion in annual sales. Coca-Cola enjoys the best of both worlds, with 20% of the developed market cold beverage share (i.e., highly predictable cash flow) and 10% of emerging market cold beverage share, which represents a higher-growth opportunity over the long run.\nBeyond geographic diversity, marketing is a big reason for Coca-Cola's success. The company has not been shy about turning to social media and well-known ambassadors to represent its brand, and it has clear holiday tie-ins that go back decades.\nConsidering that Berkshire Hathaway is netting almost a 52% annual dividend yield based on its original cost basis for Coca-Cola, there's absolutely no incentive to sell this position.\n\nImage source: Getty Images.\nMoody's: $9,076,258,024 in unrealized gains\nWhile Apple singlehandedly takes the crown for generating the highest unrealized return in nominal dollars for the Oracle of Omaha, credit ratings agency Moody's (NYSE:MCO) might well be Warren Buffett's greatest investment on a percentage basis of all time. Berkshire's cost basis is $10.05 a share following Moody's spinoff from Dun & Bradstreet in 2000. Moody's closed this past week at almost $378 a share -- good enough for a 3,661% return and nearly $9.1 billion unrealized gain.\nOne thing keeping Moody's busy is historically low lending rates. With the Federal Reserve standing pat for as long as possible on interest rates, businesses haven't been shy about issuing debt to hire, acquire, innovate, or even buy back stock, as in Apple's case. With so much corporate debt issued, Moody's has been active evaluating the debt landscape.\nEqually exciting has been the generally heightened levels of market volatility and economic uncertainty since the beginning of 2020. Though Moody's is best known for its credit ratings operations, its fastest-growing segment tends to be analytics. As long as deep levels of uncertainty exist, Moody's Analytics has double-digit annual growth potential.\nAs with Coke, Buffett's patience has resulted in an insanely high yield on cost with Moody's.
