And I think we see a lot of technology companies that want to get into health but don’t know that, make mistakes because they’re not intimately familiar. And what I can bring to Palantir is my expertise as a clinician, as a public health doc, as somebody who has been working in this field for years to help with the science and the strategy and the relationships.”\nInvesting in tech for the next pandemic\nIn his new role, Kassler said, he wants to help put Palantir’s technology in the hands of researchers who can use it to make smart decisions in the next pandemic.\nHe highlighted three areas that he believes can be improved with the help of tech solutions like Palantir’s: patching supply chain issues, dealing with localized surges of cases, and tackling racial and ethnic disparities.\nPalantir’s Foundry platform has played a significant role in the U.S. government’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic as well as private companies’ handling of essential supply chains. Palantir’s technology allows researchers to combine and overlay datasets in ways that can make supply chain weaknesses or outbreak hotspots more obvious, allowing them to act quickly on their findings.\nOn the government side, the National Institutes of Health has recently begun using Palantir’s platform to combine datasets from 50 different academic groups that it funds in ways that would have been cumbersome without the software.\nPalantir’s technology helps the groups share data in ways that protects patient identities but allows them to gain more insights by analyzing a much larger dataset than they would have access to in their individual group settings. Julie Bush, who leads Palantir’s federal health care work, said the data is now being used to better understand how the Covid-19 has impacted people with different backgrounds and conditions.\nBush said that type of broad data-sharing was less common prior to the pandemic, but that she hopes it continues after.\n“People love to hoard their data,” she said. “And the pandemic really forced people to come together and be willing to share information and sort of set the bureaucracy aside. This represents a 109% year-over-year increase and 2.2% sequential growth. Quarterly production was at 180,338.</p><p><b>Focus On Regulatory Credits, Automotive Margins: </b> The focus is likely to be on regulatory credits, which accounted for 4.3% of its revenues in the fourth quarter of 2020. Zero-emission vehicle regulations adopted by several states allow EV manufacturers to&nbsp;earn regulatory credits, which can be monetized by selling to legacy automakers, who are not able to achieve the minimum target set for the proportion of green energy vehicles sold.</p><p>Automotive gross margin slipped to 24.1% in the fourth quarter of 2020 from 27.7% in the previous quarter. It's likely the company could see a further moderation in margins, as production of the higher priced Model S/X vehicles was stalled in the quarter to allow for model refreshes.</p><p><b>View more earnings on TSLA</b></p><p>With competitive pressure intensifying, Tesla could aggressively slash vehicles prices in order to achieve volume production targets, long-time Tesla bear Gordon Johnson said in a note previewing the quarterly results.</p><p>Tesla investors may also be keen to find out more about the company's Bitcoin investment strategy and its decision to allow the use of Bitcoin for vehicle purchases.</p><p><b>Forward Outlook:</b> Tesla is well positioned to capitalize on the opportunity presented by the exponential growth that is anticipated for green energy vehicles.<b> </b>Its&nbsp;Giga Shanghai factory is now churning out both Model S and Model Y vehicles, and more capacity is expected to come on line with the opening of factories in Berlin and Texas.</p><p>Tesla's CFO Zach Kirkhorn said on the earnings call that the company is shooting for a 50% compounded annual growth rate in volume sales&nbsp;and expects to materially exceed the target in 2021.</p><p><b>Stock Take: </b> Tesla's shares, which were flying high until early February, joined the tech sell-off that ensued. From a split-adjusted high of $900.40 on Jan. 25, the stock fell to $539.49 on March 5, a peak-to-trough decline of 40%.</p><p>Although the stock has made good some of the losses since then, it is yet to break above $800 level.</p><p>Tesla holds a several-year lead and is now expanding aggressively into storage, and therefore a premium valuation for its shares is justified, CANACCORD Genuity analyst Jed Dorsheimer said in a recent note. This topped the average analysts' revenue estimate of $22.01 billion.</p><p>The company announced Q1 net income of $6.2 billion, or $2.32 per share, based on generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). J&amp;J's GAAP earnings totaled $5.8 billion, or $2.17 per share, in the prior-year period.</p><p>There was a similar improvement on a non-GAAP basis. Johnson &amp; Johnson posted adjusted net income in the first quarter of $6.9 billion, or $2.59 per share. In the prior-year period, the company's adjusted earnings came in at $6.2 billion, or $2.30 per share. J&amp;J also handily beat the consensus analysts' adjusted earnings estimate of $2.34 per share.</p><h2>Behind the numbers</h2><p>The best story for Johnson &amp; Johnson in the first quarter came from its medical devices segment. This business was significantly impacted by COVID-19 in 2020. However, sales for the segment jumped 10.9% to nearly $6.6 billion as the medical device market recovered from the pandemic.</p><p>J&amp;J's biggest segment also delivered a solid performance in the first quarter. Pharmaceutical segment revenue rose 9.6% to $12.2 billion. Sales increased 7.4% on an operational basis excluding the net impact of acquisitions and divestitures.</p><p>This growth was driven by several drugs with especially fast-rising sales. Multiple myeloma drug Darzalex topped the list with Q1 sales soaring 45.6% year over year to nearly $1.4 billion. Autoimmune disease drugs Stelara and Tremfya also were big winners, with sales jumping 18.1% to $2.1 billion and 41% to $418 million, respectively.</p><p>Johnson &amp; Johnson also reported sales for its COVID-19 vaccine for the first time in the first quarter. Even though the vaccine didn't win U.S. Emergency Use Authorization until late February, it still raked in $100 million during the quarter.</p><p>The company's consumer health segment generated revenue of $3.5 billion, down 2.3% year over year. However, this year-over-year comparison was especially challenging because of the boost in sales of over-the-counter products in the first quarter of 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic began.</p><h2>Looking ahead</h2><p>Despite the solid Q1 performance, the healthcare stock slipped a little in early trading on Tuesday. Why? Johnson &amp; Johnson's full-year guidance was a little lower than what analysts expected.</p><p>The company now projects sales of $90.6 billion to $91.6 billion for full-year 2021. This range is narrower than the company's guidance provided in January of sales between $90.5 billion and $91.7 billion. J&amp;J expects adjusted full-year earnings per share (EPS) will come in between $9.42 and $9.57. In January, its outlook projected adjusted earnings per share of $9.40 to $9.60.</p><p>An advisory committee is scheduled to meet on Friday of this week to review data about the rare blood clotting issues linked to J&amp;J's COVID-19 vaccine.
