The stock has since climbed more than 21% in the wake of the announcement.</p>\n<p>Many investors are now asking the question: Is the stock a buy ahead of its highly anticipated stock split next month? Since more investors will be able to afford NVIDIA stock, it stands to reason that there might be an increase in demand. Additionally, stockholders just approved an increase in the total number of authorized shares from 2 billion to 4 million, which will also improve liquidity, since the stock can be bought and sold at a more reasonable price.</p>\n<p>While NVIDIA shares certainly look attractive today, the upcoming stock split isn't the reason investors should be loading up on shares.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d450433a07cd9ac719dd69fcb9b5eae5\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"467\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>Making sense of NVIDIA's 4-for-1 stock split</h2>\n<p>The upcoming stock split will be NVIDIA's fifth since going public. The tech giant split its stock on a 2-for-1 basis in 2000, 2001, and 2006. The company then split its stock on a 3-for-2 basis in 2007. Its 2021 split will occur on a 4-for-1 basis, meaning investors will receive four shares for every <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> share they own. The price of the existing shares will be divided by four. For instance, instead of only owning <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> share -- currently trading at about $760 -- post-split, investors will own four shares priced at $190 each.</p>\n<p>NVIDIA's 2021 4-for-1 stock split is scheduled to take place on July 20.</p>\n<p>What's the reason for the stock split? NVIDIA said the board declared the share split \"to make stock ownership more accessible to investors and employees.\"</p>\n<h2>A suitable opportunity?</h2>\n<p>On the face of it, it might seem that NVIDIA stock is a buy because of the upcoming stock split, but it doesn't hold up to closer scrutiny. For example, if an investor holds 10 shares of NVIDIA stock, and each share is worth $760 pre-split, those 10 shares are worth a total of $7,600. After the split, that same investor will own 40 shares worth $190 each, also worth a total of $7,600 -- illustrating that the total value of their holding ultimately won't change.</p>\n<p>Furthermore, even if there's greater demand for the stock because of the lower share price after the split, it will likely be a temporary phenomenon. Other investors with a shorter investing time horizon may simply sell their shares to capitalize on any irrational run-up in the stock price, in an attempt to make a quick buck.</p>\n<p>Finally, there's simply no way to know what the news cycle could bring on any given day. Investors can't know how NVIDIA shares will trade between now and the day of the stock split. The impact of broader market trends, the overall economic picture, or some company-specific news could move the stock much more -- up or down -- than any anticipation regarding the upcoming share split.</p>\n<p>To summarize, investors should <i>never</i> buy shares in a company simply because it initiated a stock split.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/35dc2c5421257964e21b68072dea06dc\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"393\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>The <i>real</i> reason to buy NVIDIA stock</h2>\n<p>Despite all that, there are plenty of reasons that NVIDIA stock is a compelling buy right now -- though it has nothing to do with the upcoming split. Rather, it's NVIDIA's impressive results and the large and growing opportunity ahead that make it a timely opportunity.</p>\n<p>NVIDIA's first-quarter revenue climbed 84% year over year and its earnings per share surged 106%. To give that context, NVIDIA's $5.66 billion in revenue far exceeded the $5.3 billion it was guiding for. Revenue in the gaming segment jumped 106% on strong demand for the company's state-of-the-art graphics processing units (GPUs) used by gamers. At the same time, its datacenter revenue grew 79% year over year on a growing trend for NVIDIA's advanced processors used for power cloud computing, data centers, and artificial intelligence (AI).</p>\n<p>\"We had a fantastic quarter, with strong demand for our products driving record revenue,\" said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA.</p>\n<p>Given the company's impressive growth and the accelerating secular tailwinds for gaming, cloud computing, and AI, there are plenty of reasons to be bullish for NVIDIA. Since more investors will be able to afford NVIDIA stock, it stands to reason that there might be an increase in demand. Additionally, stockholders just approved an increase in the total number of authorized shares from 2 billion to 4 million, which will also improve liquidity, since the stock can be bought and sold at a more reasonable price.\nWhile NVIDIA shares certainly look attractive today, the upcoming stock split isn't the reason investors should be loading up on shares.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nMaking sense of NVIDIA's 4-for-1 stock split\nThe upcoming stock split will be NVIDIA's fifth since going public. The tech giant split its stock on a 2-for-1 basis in 2000, 2001, and 2006. The company then split its stock on a 3-for-2 basis in 2007. Its 2021 split will occur on a 4-for-1 basis, meaning investors will receive four shares for every one share they own. The price of the existing shares will be divided by four. For instance, instead of only owning one share -- currently trading at about $760 -- post-split, investors will own four shares priced at $190 each.\nNVIDIA's 2021 4-for-1 stock split is scheduled to take place on July 20.\nWhat's the reason for the stock split? NVIDIA said the board declared the share split \"to make stock ownership more accessible to investors and employees.\"\nA suitable opportunity?\nOn the face of it, it might seem that NVIDIA stock is a buy because of the upcoming stock split, but it doesn't hold up to closer scrutiny. For example, if an investor holds 10 shares of NVIDIA stock, and each share is worth $760 pre-split, those 10 shares are worth a total of $7,600. After the split, that same investor will own 40 shares worth $190 each, also worth a total of $7,600 -- illustrating that the total value of their holding ultimately won't change.\nFurthermore, even if there's greater demand for the stock because of the lower share price after the split, it will likely be a temporary phenomenon. Other investors with a shorter investing time horizon may simply sell their shares to capitalize on any irrational run-up in the stock price, in an attempt to make a quick buck.\nFinally, there's simply no way to know what the news cycle could bring on any given day. Investors can't know how NVIDIA shares will trade between now and the day of the stock split. Rather, it's NVIDIA's impressive results and the large and growing opportunity ahead that make it a timely opportunity.\nNVIDIA's first-quarter revenue climbed 84% year over year and its earnings per share surged 106%. To give that context, NVIDIA's $5.66 billion in revenue far exceeded the $5.3 billion it was guiding for. Revenue in the gaming segment jumped 106% on strong demand for the company's state-of-the-art graphics processing units (GPUs) used by gamers. At the same time, its datacenter revenue grew 79% year over year on a growing trend for NVIDIA's advanced processors used for power cloud computing, data centers, and artificial intelligence (AI).\n\"We had a fantastic quarter, with strong demand for our products driving record revenue,\" said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA.\nGiven the company's impressive growth and the accelerating secular tailwinds for gaming, cloud computing, and AI, there are plenty of reasons to be bullish for NVIDIA. This year, the Seattle-based company will be facing an uphill battle to produce top- and bottom-line growth.</p>\n<p>Still, Wall Street is betting on revenue increase of nearly 30% this time – see table below. On earnings per share, $12.22 would represent an increase of nearly 20%. One reason why is NVIDIA's upcoming four-for-<a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> stock split. While stock splits don't impact a company's valuation directly, they can attract greater numbers of small investors.</p>\n<p>However, there are plenty of even better reasons to like NVIDIA that have nothing to do with its stock split. The most obvious one is the company's gaming business.</p>\n<p>Gaming remains NVIDIA's biggest moneymaker, generating $2.8 billion of the company's total revenue of nearly $5.7 billion in the first quarter of 2021. And business is booming. NVIDIA's gaming revenue more than doubled year over year.</p>\n<p>It isn't just that gaming is increasing in popularity (although that is the case). NVIDIA benefits from regular hardware upgrade cycles. New games require even more processing power, which drives demand for the more powerful graphics processing units (GPUs).</p>\n<p>I especially like that NVIDIA is leveraging its gaming expertise to target new markets. It's happened before. However, the company has taken steps to segment its gaming business from crypto. I think that any pullback would only be temporary. NVIDIA has too many other strong growth drivers.</p>\n<h2>Moderna</h2>\n<p>Most companies can't honestly say that they've helped change the world.&nbsp;<b>Moderna</b> (NASDAQ:MRNA) can.</p>\n<p>The biotech's COVID-19 vaccine was second only to the vaccine developed by <b>Pfizer</b>&nbsp;and <b>BioNTech</b> to win U.S. Emergency Use Authorization (EUA). Moderna reported $1.9 billion in sales for the vaccine in Q1, but that's just the tip of the iceberg.</p>\n<p>Based on supply agreements in place as of early May, Moderna projected that its COVID-19 vaccine would rake in sales this year of $19.2 billion. However, the company has secured additional deals since then.</p>\n<p>In just the past two weeks, Moderna has landed two new huge supply agreements. The U.S. government is buying 200 million additional doses of Moderna's COVID19 vaccine. The European Commission agreed to purchase another 150 million doses.</p>\n<p>But does Moderna's market cap of close to $90 billion already price all of this growth in? To some extent, yes. However, shares still are trading at only around 10.5 times expected earnings. That's an attractive valuation, especially for a biotech stock.</p>\n<p>The big question for Moderna is how strong the recurring revenue from its COVID-19 vaccine will be. While the sales levels of 2021 and 2022 might not be sustainable over the long run, annual vaccinations could be likely (especially with emerging coronavirus variants). I expect Moderna will be able to count on significant COVID-19 vaccine sales for years to come.</p>\n<p>Then there's the pipeline. Moderna plans to advance its cytomegalovirus (CMV) vaccine into late-stage testing this year. It could easily be a megablockbuster if approved. That followed a court decision thatdismissed both federal and state antitrust complaintsagainst the social media giant.</p>\n<p><b>Tesla&nbsp;(TSLA)</b> – UBS cut its price target on Tesla shares to $660 from $730, while maintaining a “neutral” rating, noting increasing competition as well as operational delays.</p>\n<p><b>Boeing&nbsp;(BA)</b> – Boeingwon a 200 jet orderfromUnited Airlines(UAL), which also ordered 70 Airbus jets as it modernizes its fleet. United will buy a variety of Max jets from Boeing and A321neo models from Airbus.</p>\n<p><b>FactSet&nbsp;(FDS)</b> – The financial information company earned $2.72 per share for its fiscal third quarter, 3 cents a share shy of estimates. Revenue came in above Wall Street forecasts. FactSet expects earnings of $10.75 to $11.15 per share for the fiscal year ending in August, compared to a current consensus estimate of $11.14 a share.</p>\n<p><b>Herman Miller&nbsp;(MLHR)</b> – Herman Miller reported quarterly profit of 56 cents per share, beating the consensus estimate of 39 cents a share. The office furniture maker’s revenue came in above estimates as well. Herman Miller gave a lower-than-expected earnings forecast, however, and its shares fell 1.7% in the premarket.</p>\n<p><b>Jefferies Financial&nbsp;(JEF)</b> – Jefferies beat Wall Street forecasts for both profit and revenue for its latest quarter, and the financial services firm also announced a 25% dividend increase. Jefferies rallied 3.3% in premarket trading.</p>\n<p><b>XPO Logistics&nbsp;(XPO)</b> – XPO announced that its public offering of 5 million common shares was priced at $138 per share, compared to Monday’s close of $140.61. The transportation and logistics company plans to use the funds to pay down debt and for general corporate purposes. XPO fell 1.5% in the premarket.</p>\n<p><b>Herbalife Nutrition&nbsp;(HLF)</b> – Herbalife was rated “buy” in new coverage at B Riley Securities, with a price target of $70 per share. The nutritional products maker’s stock closed at $53.34 on Monday. B Riley notes Herbalife’s global leadership in weight management supplements as an increasing presence in the sports/fitness category.</p>\n<p><b>General Electric&nbsp;(GE)</b> – Goldman Sachs named the stock a “top idea,” based in part on an upbeat view of GE’s cash flow prospects as the industrials sector recovers. Goldman rates GE “buy” with a price target of $16 compared to Monday’s close of $12.89. GE rose 1% in premarket trading.</p>\n<p><b>Textron&nbsp;(TXT)</b> – Textron was upgraded to “overweight” from “equal-weight” at Morgan Stanley, based on a rebound in the use of business jets as well as the prospects for electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicles.</p>\n<p><b>FedEx&nbsp;(FDX)</b> – Bank of America Securities added FedEx to its “US1” list of top picks, while maintaining a “buy” rating. Herman Miller gave a lower-than-expected earnings forecast, however, and its shares fell 1.7% in the premarket.</p>\n<p><b>Jefferies Financial&nbsp;(JEF)</b> – Jefferies beat Wall Street forecasts for both profit and revenue for its latest quarter, and the financial services firm also announced a 25% dividend increase.
