Shares could fall further.</li></ul><p><b>Article Thesis</b></p><p>Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) is one of the companies that benefitted the most from ultra-low interest rates and that saw its market capitalization expand massively during the pandemic-impacted years 2020 and 2021. Things are changing, however, and Tesla has vastly underperformed the market so far this year. A multitude of issues hurts Tesla&#39;s near-term and longer-term outlook, and since shares are not cheap despite the share price drop this year, there is further downside potential.</p><p><b>Tesla Is Facing Many Issues</b></p><p>Let&#39;s start with something positive: Tesla is a leading EV player that will generate compelling business growth this year and that operates with above-average margins. That&#39;s a pretty strong result for a company that has not been around for many decades.</p><p>That being said, Tesla is facing a range of headwinds in the coming quarters and years, some of them company-specific, while others are driven by an adverse macro environment. Let&#39;s take a look at some of the key issues that could be a problem for Tesla going forward:</p><p><b>Pricing And Demand Problems In China</b></p><p>China is, by far, the most important country for Tesla, both when it comes to production and when it comes to sales. Tesla&#39;s factory in China is its most profitable one, making Tesla&#39;s China business integral to the company as a whole. In China, Tesla is seemingly facing considerable headwinds.</p><p>The company has been lowering prices repeatedly over the last couple of months, and yet, demand has not been as strong as Tesla hoped it would be, some reports suggest. See, for example, the following excerpt from a report from Seeking Alpha:</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6b28c18f93d3e288dcab7d0fb0d75c67\" tg-width=\"598\" tg-height=\"130\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>Seeking Alpha</p><p>Ideally, investors want to invest in companies with pricing power, where customers are buying up products even as prices increase. Think, for example, Apple&#39;s (AAPL) ability to sell more and more iPhones despite rising prices. Tesla has lowered the price of its vehicles in China repeatedly, and yet it looks like demand is waning. After all, there&#39;s a wide range of reports that show that delivery times of Tesla&#39;s vehicles are declining. This, in turn, suggests that Tesla&#39;s backlog is shrinking, i.e. fewer new orders are coming in relative to the vehicles Tesla produces.</p><p>The combination of declining delivery times and declining prices suggests trouble for Tesla in its most important market. Either, the company will have to lower prices further in order to revive demand, which would put even more pressure on margins, or Tesla could face a situation where it cannot fill capacity, as there aren&#39;t enough orders once Tesla has worked through its backlog. Both situations suggest that profitability in Tesla&#39;s most important market could come under pressure in the coming quarters.</p><p><b>Reliance On China</b></p><p>There&#39;s also another China-specific risk. Apart from China-based equities, which are oftentimes priced for disaster today, Tesla could be one of the most exposed companies to this macro risk. It relies heavily on China for manufacturing, it relies heavily on China for sales, as China is the largest EV market in the world, and due to China&#39;s dominance when it comes to battery production and all kinds of materials, Tesla also relies heavily on China for supplies. It seems possible that investors will increasingly factor this into their investment decisions, which could result in share price headwinds for Tesla.</p><p><b>Growing Competition</b></p><p>Another risk factor for Tesla is rising competition. It&#39;s true that competition has been a bear argument for years, but it increasingly looks like this is now, in fact, becoming a problem. Not only has Tesla lost the advantage in the highly important electric truck business, as its Cybertruck is still not available while competitors Ford (F) and Rivian (RIVN) are successfully selling their electric pickups, but Tesla is also at risk of losing its leadership position in the EV space, overall. BYD (OTCPK: BYDDY)(OTCPK: BYDDF) has emerged as an extremely capable, fast-growing EV player that could sell more EVs next year, even when we do not count plug-in hybrids. In October, BYDsold103,000 pure EVs (220,000 including PHEVs), with a growth rate of 150% year over year. That annualizes at more than 1.2 million, with a growth rate that is way higher than the growth rate Tesla has achieved in the recent past. If these trends continue, BYD will easily become the leader in the global EV space by volume, which could put pressure on Tesla&#39;s margins (as BYD could lower market-wide prices thanks to better scale), and which could also result in less interest in Tesla by investors.</p><p>Add other emerging competitors both on the high end, such as Lucid (LCID), and in the value segment (e.g. XPeng (XPEV)), and the picture could be getting worse for Tesla.</p><p><b>Musk&#39;s Behavior</b></p><p>Elon Musk, Tesla&#39;s CEO, is a controversial person. He has many fans, but he also has many critics. And recent things he did could have a negative impact on Tesla&#39;s future performance, I believe.</p><p>First, his actions as the new owner of Twitter did not make everyone happy. Some reacted very negatively to the changes he brought -- it&#39;s possible that this will make some people reconsider buying another EV from Tesla. His suggestions for a peace plan in Ukraine also resulted in some negative PR, which could further reduce the number of people willing to buy from his companies. These controversial actions also could result in more scrutiny by regulators.</p><p>Second, he is now very occupied with Twitter, which will arguably mean that he has less time guiding Tesla. When his time is diverted across many different projects, that could negatively influence the decisions he makes, which could hurt Tesla in the long run.</p><p>Last but not least, Musk continues to sell parts of his stake in Tesla -- despite the fact that hestated that he was &#34;almost done selling&#34; one year ago. Ongoing selling by the most important insider could hurt sentiment further -- that has already been visible in some statements, comments, etc. from investors, and if Musk continues to sell shares, that will likely accelerate.</p><p>So while Elon Musk surely had a large positive impact on Tesla&#39;s performance in the past, Elon Musk&#39;s importance as a Tesla insider also poses a risk for investors that shouldn&#39;t be neglected.</p><p><b>The Macro Environment Is Far From Great</b></p><p>Another problem for Tesla is that the macro environment in many parts of the world isn&#39;t great. Lockdowns in China hurt demand and consumer sentiment, while an energy crisis in Europe and record-high inflation will hurt consumers&#39; ability to buy high-priced vehicles. In the US, inflation remains well above the norm as well, pressuring real disposable income:</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/788b74c5822453891b0d2ebda7d1387e\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"417\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/>Data by YCharts</p><p>With consumers being under pressure, their ability and willingness to buy high-end vehicles will likely shrink. Add rising interest rates, and financing a new vehicle becomes even less attractive. With many people expecting a recession in the US in 2023, it is likely that Tesla and other automobile companies will feel headwinds from an adverse macro environment.</p><p><b>Tesla: A Cheap Money Bubble Stock</b></p><p>Over the last couple of years, and especially in 2020 and 2021, money was ultra-cheap. With interest rates at a very low level, and with investors being interested in ESG themes, higher-growth story stocks such as Tesla saw their valuations expand massively:</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e921162860df808f7e3ecd1edbc10886\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"433\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/>Data by YCharts</p><p>Between early 2017 and early 2022, Tesla saw its revenue grow by an attractive 670%. Its market capitalization, however, expanded by more than 3,000% -- there clearly was a big disconnect between Tesla&#39;s underlying performance and the way the market valued the company. As we can see in the above chart, that was mainly due to the massive share price gains in 2020 and 2021 -- before that, Tesla&#39;s revenue had outperformed its market capitalization gains.</p><p>When seemingly endless sums of money are flowing into a stock despite the fact that the underlying performance is lagging far behind, that poses the risk of creating a bubble. Similar issues were visible in other EV stocks at the time, but Tesla has, by far, been the EV stock with the highest market cap, thus the problem was especially noteworthy here. At the peak, Tesla was trading with a market capitalization north of $1.2 trillion, which was an outrageously high company value not too long ago. Even today, only a small number of companies are trading with a market capitalization this high.</p><p>So far this year, Tesla has declined by close to 60%, destroying hundreds of billions of dollars in value. Those that bought Tesla early on are still easily in positive territory, but for those that bought over the last two years or so, Tesla has been far from a success story -- despite the fact that the company continued to grow its revenue and profit. This reminds me of the performance of Cisco (CSCO) and Microsoft (MSFT) following the bursting of the dot.com bubble -- these companies continued to execute well and grew for many years, but the fact that prices were inflated too much during the bubble still resulted in negative price returns for many years.</p><p><b>Shares Have Gotten Cheaper But Aren&#39;t Cheap</b></p><p>With Tesla trading down almost 60% relative to where shares traded at the beginning of the year, TSLA stock has become a lot cheaper. But that doesn&#39;t mean that Tesla is cheap. Tesla still trades at more than 40x forward net profits, and those estimates could see further downward revisions going forward -- estimates were reduced slightly over the last three months, and more of that could be coming, e.g. due to the negative news from China.</p><p>Many other EV companies are trading at way lower price to sales multiples, which are generally around 2 for NIO (NIO), XPeng, Li Auto (LI), versus a sales multiple of more than 6 for Tesla. BYD, Tesla&#39;s biggest and fastest-growing peer, is trading at just 2x this year&#39;s revenue, too, while growing much faster than Tesla.</p><p>So while Tesla&#39;s downside potential is now more limited than one year ago, it is far from guaranteed that Tesla&#39;s shares will bottom soon. Shares could easily fall further, I believe, especially if earnings estimates start to decline more meaningfully or if other additional negative news emerges.</p><p><b>Takeaway</b></p><p>Buying into stocks that are rising can feel good, but it can also be dangerous. Those that chased Tesla during the COVID bubble have paid a steep price already, as Tesla is down almost 60% so far this year.</p><p>With a wide range of problems, headwinds, and risk factors, Tesla could see its shares decline further, however. It seems possible that investors will increasingly factor this into their investment decisions, which could result in share price headwinds for Tesla.Growing CompetitionAnother risk factor for Tesla is rising competition. It's true that competition has been a bear argument for years, but it increasingly looks like this is now, in fact, becoming a problem. Not only has Tesla lost the advantage in the highly important electric truck business, as its Cybertruck is still not available while competitors Ford (F) and Rivian (RIVN) are successfully selling their electric pickups, but Tesla is also at risk of losing its leadership position in the EV space, overall. BYD (OTCPK: BYDDY)(OTCPK: BYDDF) has emerged as an extremely capable, fast-growing EV player that could sell more EVs next year, even when we do not count plug-in hybrids. In October, BYDsold103,000 pure EVs (220,000 including PHEVs), with a growth rate of 150% year over year. That annualizes at more than 1.2 million, with a growth rate that is way higher than the growth rate Tesla has achieved in the recent past. If these trends continue, BYD will easily become the leader in the global EV space by volume, which could put pressure on Tesla's margins (as BYD could lower market-wide prices thanks to better scale), and which could also result in less interest in Tesla by investors.Add other emerging competitors both on the high end, such as Lucid (LCID), and in the value segment (e.g. XPeng (XPEV)), and the picture could be getting worse for Tesla.Musk's BehaviorElon Musk, Tesla's CEO, is a controversial person. He has many fans, but he also has many critics. And recent things he did could have a negative impact on Tesla's future performance, I believe.First, his actions as the new owner of Twitter did not make everyone happy. Some reacted very negatively to the changes he brought -- it's possible that this will make some people reconsider buying another EV from Tesla. His suggestions for a peace plan in Ukraine also resulted in some negative PR, which could further reduce the number of people willing to buy from his companies. These controversial actions also could result in more scrutiny by regulators.Second, he is now very occupied with Twitter, which will arguably mean that he has less time guiding Tesla. When his time is diverted across many different projects, that could negatively influence the decisions he makes, which could hurt Tesla in the long run.Last but not least, Musk continues to sell parts of his stake in Tesla -- despite the fact that hestated that he was \"almost done selling\" one year ago. Ongoing selling by the most important insider could hurt sentiment further -- that has already been visible in some statements, comments, etc. from investors, and if Musk continues to sell shares, that will likely accelerate.So while Elon Musk surely had a large positive impact on Tesla's performance in the past, Elon Musk's importance as a Tesla insider also poses a risk for investors that shouldn't be neglected.The Macro Environment Is Far From GreatAnother problem for Tesla is that the macro environment in many parts of the world isn't great. Lockdowns in China hurt demand and consumer sentiment, while an energy crisis in Europe and record-high inflation will hurt consumers' ability to buy high-priced vehicles. In the US, inflation remains well above the norm as well, pressuring real disposable income:Data by YChartsWith consumers being under pressure, their ability and willingness to buy high-end vehicles will likely shrink. Add rising interest rates, and financing a new vehicle becomes even less attractive. With many people expecting a recession in the US in 2023, it is likely that Tesla and other automobile companies will feel headwinds from an adverse macro environment.Tesla: A Cheap Money Bubble StockOver the last couple of years, and especially in 2020 and 2021, money was ultra-cheap. With interest rates at a very low level, and with investors being interested in ESG themes, higher-growth story stocks such as Tesla saw their valuations expand massively:Data by YChartsBetween early 2017 and early 2022, Tesla saw its revenue grow by an attractive 670%. Its market capitalization, however, expanded by more than 3,000% -- there clearly was a big disconnect between Tesla's underlying performance and the way the market valued the company. As we can see in the above chart, that was mainly due to the massive share price gains in 2020 and 2021 -- before that, Tesla's revenue had outperformed its market capitalization gains.When seemingly endless sums of money are flowing into a stock despite the fact that the underlying performance is lagging far behind, that poses the risk of creating a bubble. Similar issues were visible in other EV stocks at the time, but Tesla has, by far, been the EV stock with the highest market cap, thus the problem was especially noteworthy here. At the peak, Tesla was trading with a market capitalization north of $1.2 trillion, which was an outrageously high company value not too long ago. Even today, only a small number of companies are trading with a market capitalization this high.So far this year, Tesla has declined by close to 60%, destroying hundreds of billions of dollars in value. Those that bought Tesla early on are still easily in positive territory, but for those that bought over the last two years or so, Tesla has been far from a success story -- despite the fact that the company continued to grow its revenue and profit. This reminds me of the performance of Cisco (CSCO) and Microsoft (MSFT) following the bursting of the dot.com bubble -- these companies continued to execute well and grew for many years, but the fact that prices were inflated too much during the bubble still resulted in negative price returns for many years.Shares Have Gotten Cheaper But Aren't CheapWith Tesla trading down almost 60% relative to where shares traded at the beginning of the year, TSLA stock has become a lot cheaper. But that doesn't mean that Tesla is cheap. Tesla still trades at more than 40x forward net profits, and those estimates could see further downward revisions going forward -- estimates were reduced slightly over the last three months, and more of that could be coming, e.g. due to the negative news from China.Many other EV companies are trading at way lower price to sales multiples, which are generally around 2 for NIO (NIO), XPeng, Li Auto (LI), versus a sales multiple of more than 6 for Tesla. BYD, Tesla's biggest and fastest-growing peer, is trading at just 2x this year's revenue, too, while growing much faster than Tesla.So while Tesla's downside potential is now more limited than one year ago, it is far from guaranteed that Tesla's shares will bottom soon. Shares could easily fall further, I believe, especially if earnings estimates start to decline more meaningfully or if other additional negative news emerges.TakeawayBuying into stocks that are rising can feel good, but it can also be dangerous. Those that chased Tesla during the COVID bubble have paid a steep price already, as Tesla is down almost 60% so far this year.With a wide range of problems, headwinds, and risk factors, Tesla could see its shares decline further, however. Some are more optimistic, with Citi giving Tesla a sell-rated forecast of $375 → $424. JP Morgan suggests $385. The price, as I write, is $864.</li><li>Some have suggested a price of $1580, which should frighten any cautious investor away.</li></ul><p><b>Those wing doors will not get that Tesla off the ground,</b> and new action against Elon Musk&#39;s autopilot claims might even stop them being driven manually by man - including Musk - in some places. An earlier action against Musk by the SEC resulted in him giving up his driving position as both Chairman and CEO.</p><p>In my first article on Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) on 16 November, 2021, titled Tesla&#39;s Ticking Time Bomb, I strongly advised selling Tesla. The price then was $1,054.73, so it is down 18%, somewhat more than the S&amp;P500&#39;s 12% decline. On the first of that same month, the price was $1,209.</p><p>TSLA hit a low of $626 on 24 May, 2022, suggesting many are having doubts, with the recent bounce perhaps being caused by believers in that sky-high $1580 forecast. To those I would recommend they check the past and see that the price had never gone above $100 until the beginning of last year, the price level I believe it will return to. It is down 27% YTD en route to that price.</p><p>This shall probably be my last article on Tesla, as I prefer to write on companies that will gain from world developments, and those do not benefit Tesla in the way they did in the past. That should have a significant negative effect on Tesla&#39;s future performance in both the car and stock markets, and I hope this article will be of value to those holding or considering buying into Tesla now. I would emphasize here that I am not a short seller or a trader. Tesla may well suit those that are, but it does not suit me. I am an investor and I write with only that in mind.</p><p>I will first touch on Tesla the car (and solar panel) maker and expand on the challenges it faces later.</p><p><b>Tesla The Car Maker</b></p><p>Tesla was founded by a visionary named Elon Musk. He saw an opportunity in electric cars, EVs, when other carmakers - and especially the U.S. and German manufacturers - were mostly focused on traditional internal combustion engines, ICEs.</p><p>He gained an almost cult-like following among retail investors and used the resultant share price explosion to raise over $13 billion in four stock offerings. Car-making is a capital-intensive industry, and such low capital costs gave it an advantage to get off the ground and into the big league.</p><p>Tesla also had <i>good profit margins</i>. Being a newcomer to car manufacturing, Tesla did not have legacy car maker problems such as restrictive unions and large company bureaucracies to add cost, plus EVs require many fewer components than ICEs. That makes Tesla&#39;s profit margins better - gross margins were 23% in fiscal 2020, compared with Ford&#39;s (F) 10%. <i>That gap is closing.</i> Tesla&#39;s superior margins over other carmakers are used by many believers to justify its high valuation, but - while they are good compared with many - they are not sufficiently better than the world&#39;s largest carmaker Toyota (TM,OTCPK:TOYOF) to do make the difference so extreme.</p><p><b>Toyota&#39;s P/E is 10.9. Tesla&#39;s P/E is 103.77 - nearly 10 times Toyota&#39;s!</b></p><p><b>Toyota&#39;s market cap $260bn. Tesla&#39;s $967bn - nearly 4 times Toyota&#39;s!</b></p><p>The latest gross margin (&#34;GM&#34;) figures show this:</p><p>Tesla&#39;s GM: 28%. Net: 10.5%. Ops: 14.6%</p><p>Toyota&#39;s GM: 18%. Net: 8.5%. Ops: 8%</p><p>That GM gap will close when Toyota (and other ICE makers) build more EVs because of the hugely lower amount of materials needed to build EV motors than ICEs, so either TM&#39;s P/E should shoot up or TSLA&#39;s crash down.</p><p>The latest results from Tesla&#39;s website were good, but the Gross Margin is declining.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3d5fce89f9eada41780cfacd8d123c95\" tg-width=\"602\" tg-height=\"323\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/bed17678a34727ef88451b33fd78453a\" tg-width=\"599\" tg-height=\"473\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2e9b6e7adf9f631f7442c6692bd0a231\" tg-width=\"603\" tg-height=\"554\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/>Source: Tesla.</p><p>If more financial information is required, it can be found here onTesla&#39;s website.</p><p><b>Cash and cash equivalents</b> are good, but billions will be needed to build the additional giant factories required, as might the many existing problems that remain unresolved with new ones still emerging.</p><p>I will now move on to those...</p><p>Problems - Internal <b>Self-Inflicted</b></p><p><b>There are many self-inflicted problems,</b> and many have yet to be resolved. The latest are claims by California&#39;s DMV that Tesla overstated its autopilot capabilities. ThisReutersarticle tells more about that. California is Tesla&#39;s largest U.S. market. The company sold 121,000 vehicles there in 2021, out of an estimated 352,000 sold nationwide. The DMV is seeking remedies that could include <b>suspending Tesla&#39;s license to sell vehicles in California</b> and requiring the company to make restitution to drivers.</p><p>Wikipedia has this list of <b>lawsuits</b> against Tesla.I know of no other reputable company that has stirred up so much controversy. The &#34;autopilot&#34; - the word used by Elon Musk to describe Tesla&#39;s driver assistance technology - fatality case could prove to be fatal or near-fatal for the whole company. Autoblog tells us more on that.</p><p>Currently, in a car accident in the U.S., the driver of one car sues the driver of the other car. It is only very seldom the car manufacturer is sued. For self-driving cars, however, things are likely to be different. There aren&#39;t other drivers to sue. There is just the car - and the company that made it. It won&#39;t take long for plaintiffs&#39; lawyers to start filing big lawsuits, even class actions, against the car and technology companies that made the cars and designed the self-driving technology. And, as we have seen in other such situations, <b>there could soon be billion-dollar judgments against Tesla.</b></p><p><b>Recall and Warranty costs.</b> In 2021, Tesla recalled 475,000 vehicles for safety issues in the U.S. alone. Barron&#39;s recently reported that, since January, 2022, Tesla has issued four recalls for almost 1.5 million vehicles worldwide, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. That&#39;s roughly four times the 360,000 cars that Tesla delivered in the U.S. in 2021, and a half-million more, at least, than the 936,000 delivered worldwide. Global deliveries rose about 87%, compared with 2020. Those problems have to be fixed free of charge, plus many other problems require fixing under warranty.</p><p>They all require the vehicle to be returned to a dealer to be fixed. They <b>are a nuisance for the owners and costly for Tesla shareholders.</b></p><p><b>Musk&#39;s Antics.</b> I borrowed the word antic from Al Jazeera&#39;s report headed &#34;Musk&#39;s antics turn Tesla owners, new buyers against it.&#34;</p><p>Another antic was buying into <b>solar panels</b>. This is a U.S.-only market for Tesla. He got into solar by buying a troubled company founded by his cousins and on whose board he sat. That was paid for with Tesla shareholders&#39; money and led to a failed lawsuit by them, according to this Business Insider report. Its policy has been to offer <b>lowest price guarantees, which is suicidal</b> in such a commodity product market sector and - to reduce costs in the U.S. further - President Biden has waived tariffs on solar panels imported from Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam. A CNET report also claims that &#34;Tesla is skimping on customer service.&#34;This activity will be a constant drain on Tesla profits until closed!</p><p><b>Share sales.</b> <b>Musk&#39;s latest antic is to sell more Tesla shares</b> purportedly to prepare any payment he may have to pay for his Twitter bid. One has to question why did he sell now if he has confidence the stock price will be higher when the outcome of that case against him is known?! This SA News report headed &#34;Elon Musk backtracks on stock pledge&#34; tells more, including &#34;he now owns just under 15% of Tesla.&#34; One day he may be a total high-price dropout!</p><p><b>Musk&#39;s Aims.</b> As a visionary, he has achieved near miracles to get Tesla where it is today. However, it will need another miracle in the near future if 20 million cars are to be made, and even aiming for them could put Tesla into reverse gear financially. At Tesla&#39;s recent Cyber Round Up in Austin, Texas, Musk said the company would &#34;end up building at least 10 or 12 Gigafactories.&#34; Those <b>Gigafactories cost Gigabucks to build.</b> They also require years to build, and he needs them soon if he is to make <b>20 million cars per year by2030.</b> That means completion before the end of 2029 - just over 7 years away. None have been started, nor even have locations been announced!</p><p>In the unlikely event Tesla achieved that number, it would require another miracle to sell that many cars, because gaining 16.4% of the entire world car market - including ICEs - is probably impossible for any car maker.GlobeNewswiremade the 2030 estimate of total car market size in 2030 of 122.83 million units that I used to calculate that market share percentage. It makes worthwhile reading.</p><p>It also looks rather stupid ifS&amp;P Global&#39;s estimate of 26.8 million EV sales by 2030 proves correct. That would mean <b>Tesla has to achieve 75% EV market share!</b></p><p>Toyota is the world&#39;s largest carmaker and manufactures around 10 million cars per year. It has around 10% of the world market. It makes ICEs, hybrids, plug-in hybrids, battery EVs, and hydrogen cars. Tesla only makes battery EVs.</p><p>It therefore takes a bit of a stretch of the imagination to see Tesla selling 20 million cars per year by 2030... if it can make them!</p><p><b>Problems - External</b></p><p><b>Lithium supplies.</b> The Financial Times recently published this article headed &#34;Electric-car makers warned lithium supply crunch is set to last until 2030.&#34;</p><p><b>Political and economic.</b> The new <b>Inflation Reduction Act</b> could have a perverse and unintended negative result for Tesla. The $7,500 electric vehicle tax credit will be renewed in January of 2023 and last until the end of 2032. A striking new requirement is that qualifying cars must be assembled in North America and that materials and critical minerals in the battery must come from the U.S. or a country with a free trade agreement with the U.S. That means some electric vehicles sold in the U.S. will be ineligible as soon as the bill takes effect. Chinese battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (&#34;CATL&#34;), who make some batteries for Tesla, has dropped plans to make them in the U.S.</p><p><b>Political backlashes.</b> Elon Musk has probably made some <b>enemies</b> at the political top<b>in California</b>due to his personal move, and Tesla&#39;s HQ, from there to Texas. They may encourage a harsh judgement in DMV&#39;s autopilot case against Tesla that I mentioned above.</p><p>Tesla may yet face other challenges due to his behavior <b>in Germany.</b> That country is full of bureaucracies, some of which wanted to prevent the car and battery factory near Berlin from being built in the first place. Also, local residents and environmentalists - including Green party politicians - did not want their environmentally and visually valuable forest torn down, as this report shows. Elon Musk apparently barged through those bureaucratic regulations and local and environmental objections and started building without proper approvals. The battery factory has still not been started. Their unanswered environmental problems remain. This CNBC article tells more.</p><p><b>The UK is in or near recession,</b> as are several EU continues. They include important German, UK, French, and Italian car makers, all of which have poured billions into making EVs.</p><p>That brings me to another major problem for Tesla...</p><p><b>Competition</b></p><p>-<b>Loss of a previously exclusive big Tesla buyer.</b> EV subscription company <b>Autonomy has placed an order for 23,000 EVs</b> with 17 global automakers to expand and diversify its subscription fleet beyond just Tesla vehicles. Autonomy currently has 1,000 cars, all of which are Tesla models. The fleet order valued at $1.2B includes EVs from BMW (OTCPK:BMWYY), Canoo (GOEV), Fisker (FSR), Ford (F), General Motors (GM), Hyundai (OTCPK:HYMTF), Lucid Group (LCID), Mercedes-Benz (OTCPK:DDAIF), Polestar (PSNY), Rivian (RIVN), Stellantis (STLA), Subaru (OTCPK:FUJHY), Tesla (TSLA), Toyota Motor, VinFast, Volvo Car (OTCPK:VLVOF), and Volkswagen (OTCPK:VLKAF).</p><p>-<b>Others lead the autopilot race.</b> Tesla&#39;s autopilot faces costly attacks and is anyway losing the race to others, as this chart shows</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/28c1c01bae4366c47e659b1d8e789f69\" tg-width=\"349\" tg-height=\"286\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>inverse.com</p><p>Waymo leads with Baidu not far behind...</p><p>-<b>Chinese tech giant, Baidu</b>(BIDU) has securedthe first permits in China to offer commercial <b>fully driverless</b> robotaxi services to the public on open roads.</p><p>Wei Dong, vice president and chief safety operation officer of Baidu&#39;s Intelligent Driving Group, said in a statement:</p><blockquote>&#34;We believe these permits are a key milestone on the path to the inflection point when the industry can finally roll out fully autonomous driving services at scale.&#34;</blockquote><p>Baidu will sell its technology to other car makers helping those leapfrog over Tesla.</p><p>It will also make cars having unveiled the Apollo RT6 - photo above - an EV ready for production with aninitial starting price of $37,000. Jidu Auto, which is a joint venture between Baidu and Geely Automobile Holdings (OTCPK:GELYY) is looking at raising between $300M and $400M as it seeks to launch its first commercial vehicle in 2023.</p><p>- Apple (AAPL) may have this fully autonomous EVon the road by 2025. Rumors suggest it will be made by Hyundai. If so, maybe their worldwide dealer network will sell and service it.</p><p>Apple reportedly poacheda top executive from Italian luxury carmaker Lamborghini for its car project.</p><p>- China&#39;s <b>BYD (OTCPK:BYDDF,OTCPK:BYDDY) sold 641,350</b> EVs in the first six months of 2022, representing a 315% increase from the same period last year. Tesla, on the other hand, delivered a total of 564,743 vehicles in H1.</p><p>- Century-old car makers are determined to be around for another century! Every major maker is spending billions on EVs. A JV between Stellantis (STLA) and Samsung (OTCPK:SSNLF) is building a $2.5 billion battery factory in Indiana. General Motors is spending $7bn to convert an existing factory to make EVs. That shows <b>another advantage traditional car makers have overTesla.</b>It costs less to convert an existing plant to make EVs than to build a new one from scratch, plus they have an established workforce and customer base.</p><p>A report on SA tells us that GM&#39;s all-electric Hummer draws rave review from Barron&#39;s.</p><p>Ford is spending $11 billion on plants in Tennessee and Kentucky, and plans to build 600,000 EVs by the end of next year.</p><p>European companies are likewise spending huge sums at home and in the U.S. to build EVs and battery factories.</p><p>Putting all those above points into one big picture and I conclude that...</p><p><b>Tesla Is Beyond Its Sell-By Date</b></p><p>I mentioned Elon Musk&#39;s sales above. He is not the only insider to have been selling; Robyn Denholm - Chairman of the Board - was a huge seller in May and June this year. That would give Tesla 75% of the entire world EV market!To achieve that requires several more huge factories to be built that are not yet past the initial planning stages nor even a decision made where they will be located!They will require vast sums of money as might many existing problems that remain unresolved with new ones still emerging.My share price target is around $100 by year-end. Some are more optimistic, with Citi giving Tesla a sell-rated forecast of $375 → $424. JP Morgan suggests $385. The price, as I write, is $864.Some have suggested a price of $1580, which should frighten any cautious investor away.Those wing doors will not get that Tesla off the ground, and new action against Elon Musk's autopilot claims might even stop them being driven manually by man - including Musk - in some places. An earlier action against Musk by the SEC resulted in him giving up his driving position as both Chairman and CEO.In my first article on Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) on 16 November, 2021, titled Tesla's Ticking Time Bomb, I strongly advised selling Tesla. The price then was $1,054.73, so it is down 18%, somewhat more than the S&P500's 12% decline. On the first of that same month, the price was $1,209.TSLA hit a low of $626 on 24 May, 2022, suggesting many are having doubts, with the recent bounce perhaps being caused by believers in that sky-high $1580 forecast. To those I would recommend they check the past and see that the price had never gone above $100 until the beginning of last year, the price level I believe it will return to. It is down 27% YTD en route to that price.This shall probably be my last article on Tesla, as I prefer to write on companies that will gain from world developments, and those do not benefit Tesla in the way they did in the past. That should have a significant negative effect on Tesla's future performance in both the car and stock markets, and I hope this article will be of value to those holding or considering buying into Tesla now. I would emphasize here that I am not a short seller or a trader. Tesla may well suit those that are, but it does not suit me. I am an investor and I write with only that in mind.I will first touch on Tesla the car (and solar panel) maker and expand on the challenges it faces later.Tesla The Car MakerTesla was founded by a visionary named Elon Musk. He saw an opportunity in electric cars, EVs, when other carmakers - and especially the U.S. and German manufacturers - were mostly focused on traditional internal combustion engines, ICEs.He gained an almost cult-like following among retail investors and used the resultant share price explosion to raise over $13 billion in four stock offerings. Car-making is a capital-intensive industry, and such low capital costs gave it an advantage to get off the ground and into the big league.Tesla also had good profit margins. Being a newcomer to car manufacturing, Tesla did not have legacy car maker problems such as restrictive unions and large company bureaucracies to add cost, plus EVs require many fewer components than ICEs. That makes Tesla's profit margins better - gross margins were 23% in fiscal 2020, compared with Ford's (F) 10%. That gap is closing. Tesla's superior margins over other carmakers are used by many believers to justify its high valuation, but - while they are good compared with many - they are not sufficiently better than the world's largest carmaker Toyota (TM,OTCPK:TOYOF) to do make the difference so extreme.Toyota's P/E is 10.9. Tesla's P/E is 103.77 - nearly 10 times Toyota's!Toyota's market cap $260bn. Tesla's $967bn - nearly 4 times Toyota's!The latest gross margin (\"GM\") figures show this:Tesla's GM: 28%. Net: 10.5%. Ops: 14.6%Toyota's GM: 18%. Net: 8.5%. Ops: 8%That GM gap will close when Toyota (and other ICE makers) build more EVs because of the hugely lower amount of materials needed to build EV motors than ICEs, so either TM's P/E should shoot up or TSLA's crash down.The latest results from Tesla's website were good, but the Gross Margin is declining.Source: Tesla.If more financial information is required, it can be found here onTesla's website.Cash and cash equivalents are good, but billions will be needed to build the additional giant factories required, as might the many existing problems that remain unresolved with new ones still emerging.I will now move on to those...Problems - Internal Self-InflictedThere are many self-inflicted problems, and many have yet to be resolved. The latest are claims by California's DMV that Tesla overstated its autopilot capabilities. ThisReutersarticle tells more about that. California is Tesla's largest U.S. market. The company sold 121,000 vehicles there in 2021, out of an estimated 352,000 sold nationwide. The DMV is seeking remedies that could include suspending Tesla's license to sell vehicles in California and requiring the company to make restitution to drivers.Wikipedia has this list of lawsuits against Tesla.I know of no other reputable company that has stirred up so much controversy. The \"autopilot\" - the word used by Elon Musk to describe Tesla's driver assistance technology - fatality case could prove to be fatal or near-fatal for the whole company. Autoblog tells us more on that.Currently, in a car accident in the U.S., the driver of one car sues the driver of the other car. It is only very seldom the car manufacturer is sued. For self-driving cars, however, things are likely to be different. There aren't other drivers to sue. There is just the car - and the company that made it. It won't take long for plaintiffs' lawyers to start filing big lawsuits, even class actions, against the car and technology companies that made the cars and designed the self-driving technology. And, as we have seen in other such situations, there could soon be billion-dollar judgments against Tesla.Recall and Warranty costs. In 2021, Tesla recalled 475,000 vehicles for safety issues in the U.S. alone. Barron's recently reported that, since January, 2022, Tesla has issued four recalls for almost 1.5 million vehicles worldwide, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. That's roughly four times the 360,000 cars that Tesla delivered in the U.S. in 2021, and a half-million more, at least, than the 936,000 delivered worldwide. Global deliveries rose about 87%, compared with 2020. Those problems have to be fixed free of charge, plus many other problems require fixing under warranty.They all require the vehicle to be returned to a dealer to be fixed. They are a nuisance for the owners and costly for Tesla shareholders.Musk's Antics. I borrowed the word antic from Al Jazeera's report headed \"Musk's antics turn Tesla owners, new buyers against it.\"Another antic was buying into solar panels. This is a U.S.-only market for Tesla. He got into solar by buying a troubled company founded by his cousins and on whose board he sat. That was paid for with Tesla shareholders' money and led to a failed lawsuit by them, according to this Business Insider report. Its policy has been to offer lowest price guarantees, which is suicidal in such a commodity product market sector and - to reduce costs in the U.S. further - President Biden has waived tariffs on solar panels imported from Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam. A CNET report also claims that \"Tesla is skimping on customer service.\"This activity will be a constant drain on Tesla profits until closed!Share sales. Musk's latest antic is to sell more Tesla shares purportedly to prepare any payment he may have to pay for his Twitter bid. One has to question why did he sell now if he has confidence the stock price will be higher when the outcome of that case against him is known?! This SA News report headed \"Elon Musk backtracks on stock pledge\" tells more, including \"he now owns just under 15% of Tesla.\" One day he may be a total high-price dropout!Musk's Aims. As a visionary, he has achieved near miracles to get Tesla where it is today. However, it will need another miracle in the near future if 20 million cars are to be made, and even aiming for them could put Tesla into reverse gear financially. At Tesla's recent Cyber Round Up in Austin, Texas, Musk said the company would \"end up building at least 10 or 12 Gigafactories.\" Those Gigafactories cost Gigabucks to build. They also require years to build, and he needs them soon if he is to make 20 million cars per year by2030. That means completion before the end of 2029 - just over 7 years away. None have been started, nor even have locations been announced!In the unlikely event Tesla achieved that number, it would require another miracle to sell that many cars, because gaining 16.4% of the entire world car market - including ICEs - is probably impossible for any car maker.GlobeNewswiremade the 2030 estimate of total car market size in 2030 of 122.83 million units that I used to calculate that market share percentage. It makes worthwhile reading.It also looks rather stupid ifS&P Global's estimate of 26.8 million EV sales by 2030 proves correct. That would mean Tesla has to achieve 75% EV market share!Toyota is the world's largest carmaker and manufactures around 10 million cars per year. It has around 10% of the world market. It makes ICEs, hybrids, plug-in hybrids, battery EVs, and hydrogen cars. Tesla only makes battery EVs.It therefore takes a bit of a stretch of the imagination to see Tesla selling 20 million cars per year by 2030... if it can make them!Problems - ExternalLithium supplies. The Financial Times recently published this article headed \"Electric-car makers warned lithium supply crunch is set to last until 2030.\"Political and economic. The new Inflation Reduction Act could have a perverse and unintended negative result for Tesla. The $7,500 electric vehicle tax credit will be renewed in January of 2023 and last until the end of 2032. A striking new requirement is that qualifying cars must be assembled in North America and that materials and critical minerals in the battery must come from the U.S. or a country with a free trade agreement with the U.S. That means some electric vehicles sold in the U.S. will be ineligible as soon as the bill takes effect. Chinese battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (\"CATL\"), who make some batteries for Tesla, has dropped plans to make them in the U.S.Political backlashes. Elon Musk has probably made some enemies at the political topin Californiadue to his personal move, and Tesla's HQ, from there to Texas. They may encourage a harsh judgement in DMV's autopilot case against Tesla that I mentioned above.Tesla may yet face other challenges due to his behavior in Germany. That country is full of bureaucracies, some of which wanted to prevent the car and battery factory near Berlin from being built in the first place. Also, local residents and environmentalists - including Green party politicians - did not want their environmentally and visually valuable forest torn down, as this report shows. Elon Musk apparently barged through those bureaucratic regulations and local and environmental objections and started building without proper approvals. The battery factory has still not been started. Their unanswered environmental problems remain. This CNBC article tells more.The UK is in or near recession, as are several EU continues. They include important German, UK, French, and Italian car makers, all of which have poured billions into making EVs.That brings me to another major problem for Tesla...Competition-Loss of a previously exclusive big Tesla buyer. EV subscription company Autonomy has placed an order for 23,000 EVs with 17 global automakers to expand and diversify its subscription fleet beyond just Tesla vehicles. Autonomy currently has 1,000 cars, all of which are Tesla models. The fleet order valued at $1.2B includes EVs from BMW (OTCPK:BMWYY), Canoo (GOEV), Fisker (FSR), Ford (F), General Motors (GM), Hyundai (OTCPK:HYMTF), Lucid Group (LCID), Mercedes-Benz (OTCPK:DDAIF), Polestar (PSNY), Rivian (RIVN), Stellantis (STLA), Subaru (OTCPK:FUJHY), Tesla (TSLA), Toyota Motor, VinFast, Volvo Car (OTCPK:VLVOF), and Volkswagen (OTCPK:VLKAF).-Others lead the autopilot race. Tesla's autopilot faces costly attacks and is anyway losing the race to others, as this chart showsinverse.comWaymo leads with Baidu not far behind...-Chinese tech giant, Baidu(BIDU) has securedthe first permits in China to offer commercial fully driverless robotaxi services to the public on open roads.Wei Dong, vice president and chief safety operation officer of Baidu's Intelligent Driving Group, said in a statement:\"We believe these permits are a key milestone on the path to the inflection point when the industry can finally roll out fully autonomous driving services at scale.\"Baidu will sell its technology to other car makers helping those leapfrog over Tesla.It will also make cars having unveiled the Apollo RT6 - photo above - an EV ready for production with aninitial starting price of $37,000. Jidu Auto, which is a joint venture between Baidu and Geely Automobile Holdings (OTCPK:GELYY) is looking at raising between $300M and $400M as it seeks to launch its first commercial vehicle in 2023.- Apple (AAPL) may have this fully autonomous EVon the road by 2025. Rumors suggest it will be made by Hyundai. If so, maybe their worldwide dealer network will sell and service it.Apple reportedly poacheda top executive from Italian luxury carmaker Lamborghini for its car project.- China's BYD (OTCPK:BYDDF,OTCPK:BYDDY) sold 641,350 EVs in the first six months of 2022, representing a 315% increase from the same period last year. Tesla, on the other hand, delivered a total of 564,743 vehicles in H1.- Century-old car makers are determined to be around for another century! Every major maker is spending billions on EVs. A JV between Stellantis (STLA) and Samsung (OTCPK:SSNLF) is building a $2.5 billion battery factory in Indiana. General Motors is spending $7bn to convert an existing factory to make EVs. That shows another advantage traditional car makers have overTesla.It costs less to convert an existing plant to make EVs than to build a new one from scratch, plus they have an established workforce and customer base.A report on SA tells us that GM's all-electric Hummer draws rave review from Barron's.Ford is spending $11 billion on plants in Tennessee and Kentucky, and plans to build 600,000 EVs by the end of next year.European companies are likewise spending huge sums at home and in the U.S. to build EVs and battery factories.Putting all those above points into one big picture and I conclude that...Tesla Is Beyond Its Sell-By DateI mentioned Elon Musk's sales above. As the market has fallen lower, shares of electric vehicle makers have been among the most battered and bruised.</p><p>Established companies to start-ups have seen their share prices fall 40% or more in recent months as investors move away from speculative stocks that are viewed as risky. Instead, investors are seeking safe haven assets instead.</p><p>The selloff in EV stocks could worsen in coming months as high inflation forces consumers to put off discretionary purchases, such as a new vehicle, and rising interest rates make it more expensive for capital-intensive industries, such as automakers, to finance their operations. Throw in global supply chain problems and a war in Europe, and it becomes clear just how potentially risky investing in electric vehicle stocks is right now.</p><p>In the current climate, it might be best for investors to sell the following seven EV stocks before they truly crash and burn.</p><p>Electric Vehicle Stocks to Sell: Tesla (TSLA)</p><p><b>Tesla</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>TSLA</u></b>) remains the world’s dominant electric vehicle maker — for now. While the company currently boasts a 20% share of worldwide EV sales, competition is heating up and coming from all corners. Established automakers ranging from <b>Ford</b>(NYSE:<b><u>F</u></b>) to <b>Volkswagen</b>(OTCMKTS:<b><u>VWAGY</u></b>) are ramping up production of electric vehicles in an effort to dethrone Tesla.</p><p>At the same time, the company continues to be hobbled by ongoing production problems in China, where Covid-19 restrictions have slowed production at the company’s Shanghai plant to 200 cars a day, which is a fraction of the normal 2,600 electric vehicles produced daily at the site. Plus, there are growing concerns that CEO Elon Musk’s is distracted by plans to buy <b>Twitter</b>(NYSE:<b><u>TWTR</u></b>) and other adventures.</p><p>Year to date, TSLA stock is down 30% at $733 per share. Things might get worse before they get better.</p><p>Rivian (RIVN)</p><p><b>Rivian’s</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>RIVN</u></b>) major investors are dumping the company’s stock. News has just broke that auto giant Ford has sold another seven million Rivian shares worth $188.42 million. This latest sale comes days after Ford sold $214 million worth of RIVN stock, bringing the total amount offloaded by Ford to more than $400 million in the past week.</p><p>Ford’s sale came after the lock-up period expired on Rivian’s stock following the electric vehicle start-up’s initial public offering (IPO) last fall. Ford, along with <b>Amazon</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>AMZN</u></b>) are the two largest shareholders in RIVN stock. For its part, Amazon said when releasing its first-quarter results that it took a $7.6 billion loss on its stake in Rivian after the EV company’s share price fell by more than 50% in the first three months of this year. That swung Amazon to a rare quarterly net loss.</p><p>So far this year, RIVN stock is down 73% at about $28 a share. News that Ford is continuing to sell shares has put additional pressure on Rivian’s stock.</p><p>Electric Vehicle Stocks to Sell: Lucid Group (LCID)</p><p><b>Lucid Group</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>LCID</u></b>) has had some good news lately, including receiving a big order for its electric vehicles from the Government of Saudi Arabia. However, the good news can’t hide the fact that Lucid has struggled to increase its production amid global supply chain problems that are making it difficult to source parts.</p><p>Earlier this year, Lucidlowered its full-year guidance for production of between 12,000 to 14,000 vehicles from 20,000 vehicles previously. That downgrade helped prompt the current selloff in LCID stock that has accelerated in recent months. The company’s stock is now down 53% year to date at about $18 a share.</p><p>Add in an investigation by the U.S.<b>Securities and Exchange Commission</b> into the company’s IPO last summer, and a class action lawsuit by investors who feel they’ve been misled about the company’s production capacity, and there is a lot of uncertainty around Lucid Group.</p><p>Fisker (FSR)</p><p>Manhattan Beach, California-based <b>Fisker</b>(NYSE:<b><u>FSR</u></b>) has been touting that it now has more than45,000 reservations for its fully electric SUV called the “Ocean.” However, the company has yet to put any of its electric vehicles into production. That sale gave Lordstown Motors $260 million in much needed cash.</p><p>Lordstown Motors said the sale to Foxconn will enable it to move forward with production of its long-delayed Endurance electric pick-up truck. However, despite earning $260 million in cash from the Foxconn deal, Lordstown said it still needs to raise an additional $150 million to put its Endurance electric pick-up truck into full production. Where that additional money will come from remains to be seen.</p><p>In the past six months, RIDE stock has declined 28%. Over the past year, the stock has fallen 70.5%.</p><p>ChargePoint (CHPT)</p><p><b>ChargePoint</b>(NYSE:<b><u>CHPT</u></b>) isn’t an electric vehicle manufacturer in the same way the other stocks on this list are. The Campbell, California-based company makes public charging stations that are needed to recharge electric vehicles. They must become as commonplace as gas stations on roads and highways if EV adoption is to really take off around the world.</p><p>While governments, including the U.S., continue to funnel infrastructure dollars at ChargePoint and other electric vehicle charging companies in an effort to stimulate their growth and expansion, the money and incentives have had limited impact.</p><p>This helps to account for the fact that CHPT stock has pulled back 45% so far in 2022 to trade at just $10.50 a share. The stock is now down 71.5% from its 52-week high of $36.86 reached last June.</p><p>Electric Vehicle Stocks to Sell: Nio (NIO)</p><p><b>Nio</b>(NYSE:<b><u>NIO</u></b>) is considered the EV leader in China, but its stock has been clobbered in recent months amid concerns about its production and expansion, as well as the future of its U.S. listing on the New York Stock Exchange.</p><p>The Shanghai automaker announced earlier in May that it plans to pursue a secondary listing of its shares in Singapore, as regulatory scrutiny puts the company’s New York listing in doubt. Having taken the luxury end of the market, the theory goes that Tesla can take the mass market by simply scaling up.</p><p>But in markets where there is mass market demand for electric vehicles (EVs), like China and Europe, Tesla’s market share is dropping. The mass market doesn’t need huge batteries, fancy fittings, or a $50,000 price tag. Why pay 18 times revenue to own Cadillac when <b>Chevrolet</b> is what the people want?</p><p>Dances With Bulls</p><p>If I am right, Tesla is overvalued. Tesla is getting fat on the cream of the market when any dairyman knows the big sales are in low fat milk.</p><p>Tesla is indeed getting fat. Tesla bears turned into bulls after first quarter numbers came out. Tesla earned $3.3 billion, $2.86/share under GAAP, on first quarter revenue of $18.7 billion. Auto revenues were 87% ahead of a year earlier. But they were just 5% ahead of the previous quarter.</p><p>Bulls think Tesla is <b>Apple</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>AAPL</u></b>), that it has the market sewn up. They say there will be haves and have-nots in the new tech market and Tesla will be one of the haves. They see continuing supply chain worries and assume Tesla will surmount them while rivals won’t.</p><p>Tesla has taught its industry many lessons, but the lessons are being learned. Buy a <b>Toyota</b>(NYSE:<b><u>TM</u></b>) today and you’ll be faced with a host of services aimed at tying you to the brand. For car dealers, service and support are where the money is. Even <b>General Motors</b>(NYSE:<b><u>GM</u></b>) has learned that you build your full line off one platform to keep costs down and focus on battery supply.</p><p>Despite Tesla’s pretensions, in other words, it’s a car company. No car company is worth 18 times its revenue.</p><p>The Great Replacement</p><p>A walk around my middle-class neighborhood tells the story. The “Great Replacement” today isn’t people quitting their jobs. It’s replacing America’s gas-guzzling fleet with EVs.</p><p>Tesla made the big jump look cool. We have two Teslas on my block. But for most people it’s still a question of small steps. That’s why I recently became the fifth homeowner on my street to buy a Toyota hybrid. It cuts my gas use in half, but I don’t have to worry about finding a plug in the middle of West Virginia. It also cost half what a Tesla costs.</p><p>Cars with plugs, like Tesla, still represent just 5% of the U.S. car market. Hybrids are where the growth is in today’s mass market, which is dominated by Japanese, Korean and Chinese names.</p><p>Tesla’s market share in China is falling. In Europe, <b>Volkswagen</b>(OTCMKTS:<b><u>VWAGY</u></b>) and <b>Stellantis</b>(NYSE:<b><u>STLA</u></b>) now have bigger shares of the plug-in market.</p><p>The Bottom Line on TSLA Stock</p><p>Bulls look at CEO Elon Musk’s effort to buy <b>Twitter</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>TWTR</u></b>) and worry that might distract him. They even bought Tesla when it seemed he might back off the Twitter purchase.</p><p>The Twitter saga tells me Musk is bored. Tesla is being run by car guys. The great strategic cut-and-thrust is mostly over. He wants to do something else. So don’t buy or sell Tesla stock based on Musk.</p><p>Look at the fundamentals. In the near term, they’re great, but you’re overpaying. Tesla is getting fat on the cream of the market when any dairyman knows the big sales are in low fat milk.Tesla is indeed getting fat. Tesla bears turned into bulls after first quarter numbers came out. Tesla earned $3.3 billion, $2.86/share under GAAP, on first quarter revenue of $18.7 billion. Auto revenues were 87% ahead of a year earlier. But they were just 5% ahead of the previous quarter.Bulls think Tesla is Apple(NASDAQ:AAPL), that it has the market sewn up. They say there will be haves and have-nots in the new tech market and Tesla will be one of the haves. They see continuing supply chain worries and assume Tesla will surmount them while rivals won’t.Tesla has taught its industry many lessons, but the lessons are being learned. Buy a Toyota(NYSE:TM) today and you’ll be faced with a host of services aimed at tying you to the brand. For car dealers, service and support are where the money is. Even General Motors(NYSE:GM) has learned that you build your full line off one platform to keep costs down and focus on battery supply.Despite Tesla’s pretensions, in other words, it’s a car company. No car company is worth 18 times its revenue.The Great ReplacementA walk around my middle-class neighborhood tells the story. The “Great Replacement” today isn’t people quitting their jobs. It’s replacing America’s gas-guzzling fleet with EVs.Tesla made the big jump look cool. We have two Teslas on my block. But for most people it’s still a question of small steps. That’s why I recently became the fifth homeowner on my street to buy a Toyota hybrid. It cuts my gas use in half, but I don’t have to worry about finding a plug in the middle of West Virginia. It also cost half what a Tesla costs.Cars with plugs, like Tesla, still represent just 5% of the U.S. car market. Hybrids are where the growth is in today’s mass market, which is dominated by Japanese, Korean and Chinese names.Tesla’s market share in China is falling. It recently posted record car deliveries of 936,000 in 2021, up from a measly 30,000 in 2017. Revenue has followed suit. Trailing 12-month sales are up 448% in the last five years, as Tesla has scaled its manufacturing business around the globe. What&#39;s more, it has recently started to generate steady profits, putting up $4.45 billion in operating income over the last 12 months.</p><p>The company should do over $50 billion in sales in 2021, and analysts expect revenue to get close to $100 billion in 2023. So why is Tesla stock one to avoid in 2022? <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TWOA.U\">Two</a> reasons: the difficulty of manufacturing and the expectations embedded in the stock.</p><h2>Manufacturing is a difficult business</h2><p>Bending steel is difficult. Building and selling cars is difficult, and it costs a lot of money. Tesla (a car manufacturer) is not immune to these costs, and they will make it difficult for the company to return cash to shareholders over the long term -- which is how you accrue value as an owner of the stock. For example, over the last 12 months, Tesla has spent $7.3 billion on capital expenditures, which is only slightly lower than the $9.9 billion it generated in cash flow from operations.</p><p>These numbers come out to a free cash flow of only $2.6 billion over the past 12 months. At a market cap of $1.05 trillion, that is a price-to-free-cash-flow (P/FCF) over 400. Even worse, Tesla has only generated this &#34;free cash flow&#34; because it has grown its accounts payable and accrued liabilities by $2.7 billion this year. This is money Tesla will have to pay to suppliers and employees eventually, making the $2.6 billion in cash it generated unavailable to return to shareholders.</p><p>You might ask: Won&#39;t capex decrease once Tesla is done expanding its business? This is not likely. <b>Toyota</b> (NYSE:TM), the largest car manufacturer in the world, spent almost $35 billion on capital expenditures over the last 12 months, and it is growing capacity at a much slower rate than Tesla. If Tesla starts delivering more than 10 million vehicles a year (as Toyota did in 2019), it will have a perpetual need for capital investment, which will limit the amount of true free cash flow available to pay out to shareholders.</p><h2>Expectations are much too high</h2><p>Given the difficult nature of an automotive manufacturing business, most of the sector&#39;s stocks trade at dirt-cheap earnings multiples. This will likely be true of Tesla at some point. Let&#39;s look at Toyota again as an example. The company, which did $281 billion in revenue over the past 12 months, generated $28.2 billion in net income. It has a market cap of $289 billion, or right around a price-to-earnings ratio of 10. It is so low because investors in the company understand that it will be difficult for excess cash to be paid out to them relative to its earning power.</p><p>On the other hand, Tesla sports a market cap of $1.056 trillion and has a trailing net income of $3.47 billion. Could Tesla get to $28.2 billion in annual net income someday? Maybe. But as investors, you should understand that with a market cap more than three times the size of Toyota&#39;s, this is <i>already priced into the stock</i>.</p><p>If you own Tesla right now, you should have a thesis on why it will be worth more than $1 trillion in the future, and likely $2 trillion a decade from now if you desire a decent compounded annual return. You might argue that Tesla is setting itself up to do that with autonomous driving, battery technology, and solar panels. However, these are all either small and capital-intensive businesses (solar and batteries) or speculative business plans with no line of sight to becoming commercially viable (autonomous driving). Will these segments help Tesla achieve positive returns over the next decade when it already has a market cap pricing in the dominance of the majority of the automotive sector?</p><p>Tesla&#39;s market cap is much too high relative to the opportunity set in front of it and its current financial profile.
