A significant market rout has seen stocks of prominent companies and startups suffer considerable losses in value.</p><p>Moreover, new EV companies are finding themselves in a much more competitive landscape now that legacy automakers entered the fray. Hence, there are multiple electric vehicle stocks to sell at this time.</p><p>Investing in the electric vehicle market can be very attractive, given the wide range of underlying businesses to choose from. These include car companies, battery manufacturers, charging providers, and others.</p><p>However, with the stock market experiencing significant dips recently, many of these companies are finding it increasingly difficult to attract investors. This puts immense pressure on already unstable businesses and causes long-term problems within the EV sphere. Hence, only EV companies with strong track records are worth investing in at this time.</p><p><b>Nikola (NKLA)</b></p><p>EV start-up <b>Nikola</b> (NASDAQ:<u><b>NKLA</b></u>) has witnessed a steep drop in its stock price over the past few months. Nikola may have to wait before scaling production levels of its flagship Nikola Tre truck for a while.</p><p>In its most recent quarter, Nikola reported negative free cash flows amounting to $237 million. A large part of that comes from the lack of capital required to scale production, especially withthe addition of ailing battery supplier Romeo Power, which will likely result in massive cash burn going forward.</p><p>Therefore, it doesn’t seem like this firm’s tribulations will end anytime soon as it looks to scale production of its battery electric (BEV) truck.</p><p><b>Hyzon Motors (HYZN)</b></p><p><b>Hyzon Motors</b> (NASDAQ:<u><b>HYZN</b></u>) has been nothing short of a disaster for investors. There have been reports of financial manipulation, and the company has also been accused of creating false customers.</p><p>These actions raise serious questions about its legitimacy and ability to remain solvent in an increasingly competitive EV marketplace.</p><p>Late last year, short-seller Blue Orca accused the companywas knowingly overstating its revenue outlookand drawing investors in with inflated promises of future profits.</p><p>The report stated that two of Hyzon’s largest customers weren’t real. Regulators have confirmed at least some of Blue Orca’s claims, leaving Hyzon facing serious scrutiny from the public and its shareholders. This news is a major blow to Hyzon Motors’ already tarnished reputation.</p><p><b>Rivian Automotive (RIVN)</b></p><p>Despite promising EV start-up <b>Rivian Automotive’s</b> (NASDAQ:<b>RIVN</b>) potential, it’s a remarkably rough outing this year.</p><p>Not only was it forced to cut the production target for 2022 by half, but it had to recall nearly all of its deliveries. If that wasn’t enough, its workers have recently complained about inadequate safety conditions at its plants. The triple whammy should have investors wary of investing in its stock in the current economic downturn.</p><p>Though it faces a myriad of challenges, RIVN stock still trades over 16 times forward sales, a lofty valuation. With production delays, a product recall, and safety concerns, its valuation is alarming. Hence, investors should proceed cautiously when considering RIVN stock and understand the risks associated with its business case.</p><p><b>ElectraMeccanica Vehicles (SOLO)</b></p><p><b>ElectraMeccanica</b> <b>Vehicles</b> (NASDAQ:<b>SOLO</b>) seems to have grand ambitions in the electric vehicle arena, but it faces an uphill battle in gaining consumer traction.</p><p>Its vehicles are by no means elegant designs, and itsthree-wheeled structure puts them at a distinct disadvantage in a market filled with sleek and sexy alternatives. Electric three-wheelers seem unlikely to find much appeal due to their odd, unsightly designs in a hotly competitive EV market.</p><p>Its success is further hindered by the numerous challenges already in place for electric vehicle (EV) adoption. Interest rates are rapidly rising, which is damping investors&#39; appetite for risk, and confidence has been eroded by a series of high-profile failures in the industry. That means some of the most speculative cryptocurrencies are suffering the largest losses right now.</p><p><b>Dogecoin</b> was hot during last year&#39;s frenzy, but it has since declined by 86% from its all-time high of $0.74. But the token has found some life this month thanks to one of its biggest supporters. So could 2023 be the year it soars to $1?</p><h2>Dogecoin&#39;s X-factor</h2><p>A currency typically needs utility to garner widespread adoption, and widespread adoption is necessary to sustain its long-term value. Dogecoin, like most cryptocurrencies, has never proven its worth as a means of exchange, so just 2,058 businesses accept it as payment for goods and services globally.</p><p>But one thing Dogecoin does have going for it is Elon Musk. The billionaire is the head of electric vehicle powerhouse <b>Tesla</b>, and just a few months ago, he famously bought social media giant Twitter. He is also one of the biggest believers in Dogecoin and spent much of 2021 promoting the token on social media.</p><p>Musk took things one step further when he appeared on the TV show <i>Saturday Night Live</i> last May, mentioning Dogecoin in a skit. Ironically, that marked the top, and the token&#39;s price has fallen ever since.</p><p>But to his credit, Musk is doing his part to drive adoption. Tesla accepts Dogecoin as payment for some items of merchandise, and Musk also takes Dogecoin for his recently released fragrance, Burnt Hair, which sold 30,000 bottles in the week of release.</p><p>There is rampant speculation that Dogecoin could play a part in the Twitter ecosystem. Some investors believe Musk will accept the token as payment for Twitter&#39;s blue-check profile verification, and others think Twitter could create a digital wallet that may support Dogecoin.</p><p>The likelihood of either event is entirely unknown, but that hasn&#39;t stopped the token&#39;s price from soaring by more than 100% from its 52-week low over the last few months.</p><h2>Dogecoin&#39;s challenges can&#39;t be overcome by one person alone</h2><p>The cryptocurrency industry is largely unregulated, and as a result, it&#39;s a breeding ground for nefarious activity. And when things do go wrong, investors have almost no way to recover their funds. That makes crypto very different from cash held in a U.S. bank account, which is automatically insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC) up to $250,000.</p><p>Many investors have learned that lesson the hard way this year. Crypto-sector collapses seem to be growing in both size and frequency, with the most recent example being FTX. It was one of the largest exchanges in the world and was plunged into bankruptcy last month in spectacular fashion, owing an estimated $3 billion to its customers. Most of those with assets locked up in FTX are unlikely to ever recoup those losses.</p><p>FTX&#39;s failure followed the failure of the <b>TerraUSD</b> stablecoin, which wiped out an estimated $60 billion in value when it lost its peg to the U.S. dollar in May of this year.</p><p>What do these stories have to do with Dogecoin? Well, they&#39;ve contributed to the rapid erosion in trust for the cryptocurrency industry as a whole, and since Dogecoin is at the speculative end, that adds yet another hurdle the token has to vault to gain meaningful value.</p><h2>Dogecoin&#39;s path to $1 is unclear</h2><p>If Dogecoin reaches $1 per token, the total value of all tokens in circulation would top $139 billion -- an increase of more than 10-fold. It&#39;s a more plausible proposition than the same price for a token like <b>Shiba Inu</b>, which would be valued at $589 trillion if it reached $1 per token, but it still remains unlikely.</p><p>The bottom line is that Dogecoin won&#39;t rise to $1 without consumers and businesses adopting it as a payment mechanism. It needs to go from being a speculative asset to being one people can spend. Elon Musk can&#39;t carry that weight alone -- even though he has a portfolio of highly successful companies.</p><p>Next year might offer a more favorable climate for the cryptocurrency markets if inflation continues to fall and if interest rates stop rising, because that will give investors a little more appetite for risk. That means some of the most speculative cryptocurrencies are suffering the largest losses right now.Dogecoin was hot during last year's frenzy, but it has since declined by 86% from its all-time high of $0.74. But the token has found some life this month thanks to one of its biggest supporters. So could 2023 be the year it soars to $1?Dogecoin's X-factorA currency typically needs utility to garner widespread adoption, and widespread adoption is necessary to sustain its long-term value. Dogecoin, like most cryptocurrencies, has never proven its worth as a means of exchange, so just 2,058 businesses accept it as payment for goods and services globally.But one thing Dogecoin does have going for it is Elon Musk. The billionaire is the head of electric vehicle powerhouse Tesla, and just a few months ago, he famously bought social media giant Twitter. He is also one of the biggest believers in Dogecoin and spent much of 2021 promoting the token on social media.Musk took things one step further when he appeared on the TV show Saturday Night Live last May, mentioning Dogecoin in a skit. Ironically, that marked the top, and the token's price has fallen ever since.But to his credit, Musk is doing his part to drive adoption. Tesla accepts Dogecoin as payment for some items of merchandise, and Musk also takes Dogecoin for his recently released fragrance, Burnt Hair, which sold 30,000 bottles in the week of release.There is rampant speculation that Dogecoin could play a part in the Twitter ecosystem. Some investors believe Musk will accept the token as payment for Twitter's blue-check profile verification, and others think Twitter could create a digital wallet that may support Dogecoin.The likelihood of either event is entirely unknown, but that hasn't stopped the token's price from soaring by more than 100% from its 52-week low over the last few months.Dogecoin's challenges can't be overcome by one person aloneThe cryptocurrency industry is largely unregulated, and as a result, it's a breeding ground for nefarious activity. And when things do go wrong, investors have almost no way to recover their funds. That makes crypto very different from cash held in a U.S. bank account, which is automatically insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC) up to $250,000.Many investors have learned that lesson the hard way this year. Crypto-sector collapses seem to be growing in both size and frequency, with the most recent example being FTX. It was one of the largest exchanges in the world and was plunged into bankruptcy last month in spectacular fashion, owing an estimated $3 billion to its customers. Most of those with assets locked up in FTX are unlikely to ever recoup those losses.FTX's failure followed the failure of the TerraUSD stablecoin, which wiped out an estimated $60 billion in value when it lost its peg to the U.S. dollar in May of this year.What do these stories have to do with Dogecoin? Well, they've contributed to the rapid erosion in trust for the cryptocurrency industry as a whole, and since Dogecoin is at the speculative end, that adds yet another hurdle the token has to vault to gain meaningful value.Dogecoin's path to $1 is unclearIf Dogecoin reaches $1 per token, the total value of all tokens in circulation would top $139 billion -- an increase of more than 10-fold. It's a more plausible proposition than the same price for a token like Shiba Inu, which would be valued at $589 trillion if it reached $1 per token, but it still remains unlikely.The bottom line is that Dogecoin won't rise to $1 without consumers and businesses adopting it as a payment mechanism. It needs to go from being a speculative asset to being one people can spend. Elon Musk can't carry that weight alone -- even though he has a portfolio of highly successful companies.Next year might offer a more favorable climate for the cryptocurrency markets if inflation continues to fall and if interest rates stop rising, because that will give investors a little more appetite for risk. For those of you keeping score at home, this would work out to a near-quintupling in the company&#39;s share price in 2023.</p><p>Dayal&#39;s optimism stems from a number of catalysts. First and foremost is the ongoing shift by most developed countries toward a renewable-energy-driven future. Plug expects to play a key role in supplying fuel cells for vehicles and industrial equipment (e.g., forklifts), as well as building the infrastructure needed to support fuel cell vehicle refueling.</p><p>Additionally, Dayal is excited about management&#39;s efforts to improve operating margin while continuing to rapidly growing sales. Earlier this year, Dayal cited the opening of the company&#39;s fuel cell gigafactory in New York (this occurred in mid-November) and the rollout of next-generation GenDrive units, which are less costly to service, as reasons the company&#39;s margin can improve.</p><p>But the biggest catalyst of all might just be Plug Power&#39;s ability to forge partnerships and joint ventures. It landed an equity investment from SK Group in early 2021 and is working with <b>Renault</b> via a joint venture to go after a significant portion of Europe&#39;s light commercial vehicle market. These partnerships should help lift Plug from just over $500 million in sales in 2021 to a company-forecast $3 billion in revenue by 2025.</p><p>However -- and this is the <i>big</i> &#34;however&#34; -- Plug Power isn&#39;t profitable, and the growing likelihood of a U.S. recession, coupled with high inflation in most developed countries, could coerce businesses and governments to postpone their green-energy transition/spending to a later date.</p><p>With Plug Power already valued at north of $9 billion, a lot of its future sales growth appears to be baked in. Until the company can plant its proverbial feet in the ground and deliver on the bottom line, a $78 price target will be hard to justify.</p><h2>Bionano Genomics: Implied upside of 474%</h2><p>A second supercharged growth stock with monumental upside, at least according to one Wall Street analyst, is small-cap genome analysis company <b>Bionano Genomics</b>. If <b>Oppenheimer</b> analyst Francois Brisebois is correct, Bionano shares will hit $12 in 2023, which would represent an upside of a cool 474%.</p><p>Although Brisebois is the current analyst covering Bionano for Oppenheimer, it was his predecessor, Kevin DeGeeter, who primarily laid out the case for Bionano Genomics running to $12. In DeGeeter&#39;s view, Bionano&#39;s optical genome mapping (OGM) system, known as Saphyr, has demonstrated that it&#39;s faster, less expensive, and in many ways more effective at identifying structural genome variations than other OGM systems.</p><p>One thing investors don&#39;t have to worry about with Bionano Genomics is a lack of data demonstrating Saphyr&#39;s efficacy. Over the past two years, the company has released numerous studies and data points extolling Saphyr&#39;s ability to recognize structural variations in everything from various types of cancer to genetic disorders and recurrent pregnancy loss. In theory, Saphyr can play a key role in helping researchers and drug developers fight hard-to-treat diseases.</p><p>Another positive for Bionano Genomics is its healthy cash position. After its share price went parabolic to begin 2021, management wisely chose to issue stock to raise plenty of capital. The company ended September with approximately $180 million in cash, cash equivalents, and available-for-sale securities.  That&#39;s more than enough to offset quarterly losses as the company continues to innovate and look for ways to expand Saphyr&#39;s utility.</p><p>So, why is Bionano Genomics at $2.09 per share and not $12? The answer to that question largely has to do with Saphyr not being an approved diagnostic system by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Without this approval, Saphyr&#39;s utility is limited within the United States. It&#39;s not exactly clear if and when Saphyr might get the green light from the FDA, either.</p><p>Although Bionano&#39;s cash does provide a somewhat safe floor, the ceiling proposed by Brisebois and DeGeeter doesn&#39;t seem achievable without FDA support.</p><h2>Novavax: Implied upside of 1,153%</h2><p>The third supercharged growth stock with truly jaw-dropping upside potential, based on the price target of one analyst, is biotech stock <b>Novavax</b>. According to H.C. Wainwright analyst Vernon Bernardino, who last updated his firm&#39;s price target in March 2022, Novavax is poised to hit (drum roll) $207 per share. That represents a whopping 1,153% upside from where shares ended this past week.</p><p>Bernardino&#39;s price target, which sits as the high-water mark among covering analysts, was based on the idea that Novavax would receive authorization to sell its protein-based COVID-19 vaccine, NVX-CoV2373, worldwide. Whereas the <b>Moderna</b> and <b>Pfizer</b>/<b>BioNTech</b> vaccines rely on messenger-RNA (mRNA) technology, the Novavax vaccine is differentiated in that it relies on an older and more traditional application of introducing harmless pieces of spike protein to teach a person&#39;s immune system how to fight and/or prevent infection. The thinking here is that folks who were leery of getting an mRNA vaccine might be more willing to receive an initial series or booster shots from Novavax&#39;s protein-based COVID-19 vaccine.</p><p>Something else that&#39;s working in Novavax&#39;s favor is the efficacy of NVX-CoV2373. Only three COVID-19 vaccines have reached the highly coveted 90% vaccine efficacy (VE) level. Those being Moderna (94.1%), Pfizer/BioNTech (95%), and Novavax (90.4%) with its U.S./Mexico trial in 2021. Even though VE is just one measure of efficacy, it&#39;s a strong enough headline number to keep Novavax in the global rotation as a major initial series and booster vaccine player.</p><p>Similar to Bionano, Novavax is swimming with cash. The company ended the third quarter with $1.28 billion in cash and cash equivalents, which is more than enough to cover the future repayment of its convertible notes and fuel ongoing research.  In particular, Novavax could be one of the first drug developers to bring a combination vaccine targeting COVID-19 and influenza to market.</p><p>But even being a shareholder, I don&#39;t in any way foresee $207 as a viable price target for Novavax in 2023. With the company enduring numerous emergency-use filing delays and production snafus, it missed out on most of the low-hanging fruit in developed markets in 2022. Moving forward, it&#39;ll primarily be focusing its attention on recurring booster shots in developed countries and initial series vaccinations in emerging markets.</p><p>While I believe Novavax is an amazing value at its current share price, it could take a couple of quarters before Wall Street realizes that as well.
