Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) vs XPeng's Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS): A Comparison of Autonomous Technologies

With the latest news from XPeng on expanding their City Navigation Guided Pilot (City NGP), an expanded version of XPeng’s NGP, which performed tasks like assisted driving on highways based on the navigation route set by the driver.

I shall share in this article on how $Tesla Motors(TSLA)$ Full Self-Driving (FSD) stacked up against $XPeng Inc.(XPEV)$ Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS)

The race for autonomous vehicles is rapidly evolving, with leading automakers striving to develop cutting-edge technologies to make self-driving cars a reality.

Tesla and XPeng are Two prominent players in this field, both of which have made significant strides in their respective autonomous driving systems.

In this article, we will compare Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) and XPeng's Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), exploring their features, capabilities, and the progress each company has made.

Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD)

Tesla's FSD is an ambitious vision that aims to achieve complete autonomy, allowing vehicles to navigate, park, and perform complex maneuvers without human intervention.

Tesla has been at the forefront of self-driving technology, continuously refining its system through over-the-air updates and an extensive data collection network from its fleet of vehicles.

Key Features of Tesla's FSD

Autopilot

Tesla's Autopilot is the foundation of FSD, providing features like adaptive cruise control, lane centering, and automatic lane changes. It uses a combination of sensors, including cameras, radar, and ultrasonic sensors, to navigate the vehicle safely.

Navigate on Autopilot

This feature enables the vehicle to autonomously navigate on highways, including lane changes and exits, based on GPS data and real-time traffic conditions.

Traffic Light and Stop Sign Control

FSD-equipped Teslas can detect and respond to traffic lights and stop signs, bringing the car to a complete stop when necessary.

Full Self-Driving

Tesla's Full Self-Driving Beta program offers select Tesla owners access to more advanced autonomous features, such as city driving, parking, and recognizing and responding to complex traffic scenarios.

XPeng's Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS)

XPeng, a Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, has also made significant advancements in autonomous driving technology.

While not aiming for full autonomy like Tesla's FSD, XPeng's ADAS is designed to provide advanced safety and convenience features to enhance the driving experience.

Key Features of XPeng's ADAS

Navigation Guided Pilot (NGP)

XPeng's NGP allows for hands-free driving on highways, providing adaptive cruise control, lane centering, and automated lane changes. It leverages high-precision maps and utilizes cameras and sensors for real-time situational awareness.

Traffic Jam Pilot (TJP)

TJP enables the vehicle to navigate congested traffic conditions autonomously, maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles and making appropriate lane changes.

Autonomous Parking

XPeng's ADAS offers fully autonomous parking capabilities, allowing the vehicle to park itself in designated parking spaces, with the driver only needing to activate the feature.

Remote Control Parking (RCP)

XPeng vehicles equipped with ADAS can be remotely controlled to maneuver into or out of parking spaces using a smartphone app.

Comparing Tesla's FSD and XPeng's ADAS

Level of Autonomy

Tesla's FSD aims for complete autonomy, while XPeng's ADAS is more focused on advanced driver assistance. Tesla's system is more ambitious in terms of achieving full self-driving capability.

Feature Availability

Tesla has a broader range of autonomous features, including city driving and recognition of complex traffic scenarios, available through its Full Self-Driving Beta program. XPeng's ADAS focuses primarily on highway driving and parking-related functionalities.

OTA (Over The Air) Updates

Both Tesla and XPeng offer over-the-air updates to enhance their autonomous driving systems. However, Tesla's extensive fleet and data collection network provide it with a larger dataset to refine its algorithms and improve the FSD system over time.

Geographical Availability

While Tesla's FSD has a more global presence, XPeng's ADAS is primarily available in China. Tesla's broader reach allows it to gather diverse data from various driving environments worldwide.

Use of Sensors

Sensors play a crucial role in navigation and mapping systems, enabling EVs to understand their precise location, anticipate road conditions, and optimize routes for efficiency. Tesla and XPeng have employed various sensors to achieve this level of accuracy.

Tesla vehicles utilize GPS sensors, combined with data from high-resolution maps and real-time traffic information, to provide accurate navigation guidance. In addition, the sensors in Tesla's vehicles continuously monitor the road, identifying potential hazards and adjusting the route accordingly.

XPeng's navigation system integrates multiple sensors, including GPS, cameras, and lidar, to build a detailed understanding of the vehicle's environment. This allows for precise localization, accurate mapping, and effective route planning. XPeng's vehicles can even update their maps in real-time, making them adaptive to changes in the road network.

Tesla (TSLA) is replacing Ultrasonic Sensors with Tesla Vision.

it's impressive to see both companies working hard to create an autonomous driving future for mankind. These companies are the real heroes that wall street doesnt deserve. Analysts will continue to be haters because they'll never appreciate the concept of being heroes, which implies there'll be impact to cash flows & profitability in the short term. analysts will love to bash on the impracticality of such tech because they just lack understanding in tech advancement

agree. with dojo the ability to make sense of vast database gets easier.  it's not the majority of common situations but the minority of something unexpected where intelligence if any program is tested.

Thanks for highlighting. But I look at it differently, is how the system can self learn with each new data points collected as more software get deployed. Tesla should have a pretty well trained model by now with the large data point database collected.

Hype is over. Shorties will regain power. Won't break through $12. 6 months of low. 4 days of high.
