Palestinian militant Hamas launched a large-scale raid on Israel on Saturday, and Israel immediately launched air strikes on Hamas strongholds.

The Israeli government stated on Sunday that the death toll in Israel has exceeded 600, with more than 100 people taken hostage, and more than 2,000 people injured. The health department of the Gaza Strip said that at least 370 people in Gaza have been killed and 2,200 injured.

US President Biden ordered "additional assistance" to Israel.   • The U.S. aircraft carrier fleet led by the U.S. nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Gerald Ford has been ordered to head to the Eastern Mediterranean. The carrier fleet appeared in the Ionian Sea south of the Adriatic in early October, according to the U.S. Navy.

Austin claimed that the above actions have strengthened the military deployment of the US military in the region. He further pointed out that "the United States maintains a standby status of troops stationed around the world to strengthen deterrence when necessary."
