The end of an era. Many more beautiful things than this will be said in the coming days, but I learned a lot from Charlie and would like to give him his due from my perspective, somewhere.
My grandparents were immigrant laborers who came to America with nothing, and their parents couldn't read or write. They had to pay other people to write for them. There was no excess of money. My own parents spent their lives working class but in a hundred ways the world and their decisions hardened them, so in a hundred ways they did not live well.
To this, I was born. I was not born to the life I've ended up with. What changed my fortune was more than a touch of fate, less than a perfect effort, and some very good advice from friends I never met.
Charlie was one of those friends. He helped change my mind, and that changed my stars. I'll be buying some peanut brittle, holding the stock, and I will remember. Well done.
