Setback for Sage (NASDAQ:SAGE) as Parkinson's study misses mark
Sage Therapeutics (NASDAQ:SAGE) today announced the topline results from its PRECEDENT study, a Phase 2 clinical trial investigating the efficacy of dalzanemdor (SAGE-718), an oral medication aimed at treating mild cognitive impairment (MCI) associated with Parkinson’s Disease (PD).
The study unfortunately did not meet its primary endpoint.
The PRECEDENT trial, which was double-blind and placebo-controlled, tested the impact of daily doses of dalzanemdor on cognitive function as measured by the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale Fourth Edition (WAIS-IV) Coding Test.
The results at day 42 did not show a statistically significant improvement in cognitive scores among participants receiving the drug compared to those given a placebo.
Despite the setback, dalzanemdor was generally well-received by participants, showing good tolerability and no new safety concerns, which remains a positive takeaway from the trial.
Barry Greene, the CEO of Sage Therapeutics, expressed disappointment in the study's outcomes but remained optimistic about the drug's potential in other areas.
"While we are disheartened by these results, given the significant impact of cognitive impairment on individuals and families dealing with Parkinson’s Disease, it’s crucial to recognize that the distinct pathophysiology of PD may not reflect the drug’s efficacy in other conditions," said Greene.
Sage Therapeutics is eagerly anticipating further results from upcoming Phase 2 trials of dalzanemdor in Huntington’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease later this year, hopeful that the drug may yet show beneficial effects in different neurodegenerative disorders.
