The numbers: Job openings in the U.S. fell to the lowest level in three and a half years and returned to prepandemic levels in another sign the labor market has softened and that work is not as easy to find.Job postings fell to 7.7 million in July from a downwardly revised7.9 million in June, the Labor Department said Wednesday.New openings have fallen steadily from a record 12 million in 2022.
