1. Personal Information Q&A
⢠How long have you been involved in investingļ¼
More than 10 years. However, I was born into a family where my parents are stock investors, so I was introduced to it since I was in kindergarten but back then, I wasnāt serious about it. I started learning about it gradually only in my teenage years.
⢠What's your investing background? (share your motivation, experiences & knowledge accumulation)
I went to pursue a degree in Banking and Finance from Nanyang Technological University where I further specialized in equities and derivatives market. Thatās how Iāve gotten my first in-depth knowledge into investing. Iāve even taken one of the CFA tests and joined a CFA stock analysis competition. Also, I was following my parentsā footsteps. If they werenāt stock market investors, I would probably be pursuing something else. They sparked the interest and idea of investing.
I represented my university in a Singapore nationwide trading championship and managed to rank #1 in the whole nation, beating over 200 finance students from various universities and schools. Thatās when people started to tell me to teach and that was how I got into teaching.
⢠How frequently do you trade? Whyļ¼
For long term stocks investing, not very often. But Iāll be very active when the market crashes. For my trades, it can range from once a day to once every few weeks since I am a swing trader and position trader. I donāt do day trade nor scalp.
⢠What's your trading styleļ¼short term frequent trading or long term value investingļ¼
Long term trading and long-term value investing
⢠Has any investment guru, relevant personnel, or books influenced your investment strategies?
Warren Buffett for investing and Paul Tudor Jones for forex trading. I love that both emphasize a lot on fundamental analysis rather than technical analysis, which is what most retail traders focus on.
⢠What has been your most profitable or successful trade so far?
My investments earn me more money than my trades since long term investments allow me to compound my money long term. Long term investing in the stock market has been most profitable for me, generating me over 6 figures.
⢠Can you recall the valuations you made before the decision to make the trade?
I have a checklist for investing and a separate checklist for trading. For stocks, I look at the business, management, financials and valuation. For trades, I look at the global macro picture, sentiment, fundamentals to generate ideas and then enter using technical analysis.
⢠Do you think your strategy of valuation can be duplicated to increase winning rates in trade? Why?
I donāt focus much on win rates, even though it plays a role. My focus is risk-to-reward ratio
2. Questions regarding Warren Buffett
⢠Do you agree with Warren Buffett's investment concept? Do you think your investment style matches his investment concept?
I like his approach to fundamental analysis, mainly evaluating the quality of the business, management and financial ratios. But I donāt agree that he focuses so much on the small picture, meaning the company fundamentals itself. The economic factors can also affect the stock and hence I also apply economic analysis and studying market cycles into my evaluation. This skill was gotten from forex trading. I just add it into my investment analysis.
⢠Do you follow the annual Warren Buffett stakeholder meeting?
I read about his letter to shareholders a lot because thatās where he drops his wisdom.
⢠What are you most attentive to this year?
Focusing more on my stock investments rather than trading.
⢠What is one thing you apprehended the most this year?
In terms of learning points, itās that people will always make the same mistake in the stock market. The stock market tanked recently, and people still panicked sold. Seems like most people havenāt learned anything from the 2020 and 2008 market crash.
⢠What do you think are the key factors long-term investors have to consider?
The 4 points Iāve mentioned just now: Business, management, financials and valuation.
However, investors should also learn to read the economic cycle and understand how global macro factors affect stocks.
3. Concluding Thoughts
⢠What are your investment goals for 2025 or for upcoming years?
Invest in more good quality stocks that can last me for the many years to come as well as share my investing insights with my followers
⢠Are there any industries, sectors, even individual stocks that you feel will be bullish in the long run?
Tech stocks are here to stay for a long time. Companies that leverage AI will have a head start. However, not all tech stocks are worth the buy. A lot of them are overvalued.
⢠Do you have any tips and advice you would like to provide to traders on the Tiger App?
Learn as much as you can. Most people nowadays gamble in the stock market and invest based on hot stock tips. If you want to become the top 10% profitable investor, youāll have to do what most are not willing to do and that is to learn as much as you can about the stock market and invest in yourself. Most investors are not willing to invest in themselves. They Google everything and try to figure out things themselves only to end up losing more money in the stock market.
⢠What do you think of Tiger's App and the Cash Boost Account?
Comparing the Tigerās app with other local brokers that Iāve used, I found that Tigerās app offers more visually appealing data that is easier for investors. Some brokers only display numbers without presenting them visually. I hope that they can add more financial ratios to the mix in the future.
