Why Affirm’s Record Quarter Still Failed the Price-Action Test

$Affirm Holdings, Inc.(AFRM)$ reported its strongest operating quarter yet, but the stock could not hold the post-earnings enthusiasm. That divergence does not prove the business is weakening. It does show that investors are no longer rewarding buy-now-pay-later volume growth without testing funding costs, credit discipline and the quality of reported profit.

Affirm released results on August 27 for its fiscal fourth quarter ended June 30. Gross merchandise volume increased 36% to $14.1 billion, revenue rose 33% to $1.166 billion and active consumers increased 21% to 27.8 million. Transactions per active consumer reached 7.0, up 20%, while Affirm Card GMV more than doubled to $2.84 billion. These figures show that the network is expanding through merchant checkouts and a direct consumer product rather than depending upon one channel. Affirm’s official fourth-quarter supplement provides the operating data.

The improvement in profitability is real at the operating level. Quarterly GAAP operating income reached $147 million, versus a loss of $8 million a year earlier, and adjusted operating income increased to $353 million. However, the $1.62 billion quarterly net-income headline was dominated by a $1.45 billion income-tax benefit. The cleaner conclusion is that Affirm became sustainably operating-profitable—not that ordinary quarterly earnings suddenly exceeded revenue.

Management’s fiscal-2027 outlook is ambitious but internally consistent. It expects more than $64 billion of annual GMV, revenue near 8.49% of GMV, revenue less transaction costs near 4.16% of GMV, adjusted operating margin above 30.5% and GAAP operating margin above 14.5%. First-quarter guidance calls for $13.7–$14.0 billion of GMV and $1.19–$1.22 billion of revenue. The outlook assumes short-term benchmark rates rise from fiscal 2026, making funding efficiency a more demanding test rather than a free tailwind.

The bullish case is that Affirm is scaling while retaining pricing and underwriting control. Its revenue-less-transaction-cost ratio was 4.2% of GMV in the June quarter, and the platform has diversified across general merchandise, travel, fashion, electronics and services. Card adoption creates more repeat transactions and reduces dependence on consumers encountering Affirm only at a partner’s checkout.

The bearish case is the unavoidable pro-cyclicality of consumer lending. Affirm’s presentation shows that 44% of relevant receivables were non-prime, although management’s comparison indicates its 30-day delinquency performance remained favourable to selected consumer lenders. A weaker labour market, higher fuel prices or another rate increase can raise both loss provisions and funding expense. Merchant concentration is another risk: Affirm disclosed that a large partner’s move toward its own wallet created a GMV headwind, illustrating how platform relationships can change.

AFRM closed at $74.45 on August 31, down 4.3%, after trading between $71.23 and $76.95 on approximately 11.6 million shares. It had closed at $77.76 on August 28 following the results. The inability to preserve the earnings bounce leaves $71–$72 as immediate support and $68–$70 as the more important base. Resistance is $77.50–$80, followed by $85 and the 52-week high around $93.20. The heavy-volume rejection is a warning, but support has not yet failed.

If AFRM holds $70 and subsequently closes above $78 as implied volatility declines, a 30–45-day $65/$60 bull put spread, or liquid strikes with the short put near 0.10–0.15 live delta below support, would express a cautiously bullish thesis with defined risk. A close below $68 accompanied by rising delinquencies, weaker revenue less transaction costs or reduced guidance would invalidate the setup. Maximum loss equals the $5 width minus the credit received.

The evidence leans moderately bullish on the business but neutral on the stock until price confirms the earnings quality. GMV, card adoption and operating margins are moving in the right direction; funding costs and consumer credit remain the counterweight. The view would be invalidated by a sustained break below $68, worsening delinquency and charge-off trends or fiscal-2027 revenue less transaction costs falling materially below guidance.
