The parliamentary enquiry aims to review bank operations and accountability ahead of its June report deadline.
The Australian Senate has voted to launch an enquiry into the management of the nation's $350 billion mortgage offset account market following widespread banking failures.
This parliamentary action follows a regulatory review by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission that required eight leading banks to pay more than $55 million in remediation to affected home loan customers.
“Australians should not be left paying more interest because an offset account was not properly established, linked or managed,” said Liberal Senator Andrew Bragg.
The investigation will examine how financial institutions link, manage, and monitor offset accounts, while also reviewing whether remediation processes adequately address customer interest costs.
The Senate committee stated that the final report on bank practices and customer impacts is expected to be delivered by June.
Mortgage offset accounts are designed to reduce home loan interest by offsetting everyday savings balances against the principal debt owed to lenders.
Recent regulatory audits revealed systemic issues across the sector, including accounts linked to incorrect loans, unapplied interest reductions, and administrative delays in processing customer requests.
