South Korea’s Semiconductor Exports Surge in September — Can AI Stocks Hit New Highs?

South Korea’s customs released export data for the first 20 days of September. Total exports reached $71.4 billion, jumping 78.3% YoY and hitting an all-time high for this period.

Semiconductor exports alone hit $34.1 billion, skyrocketing 259.4% YoY and also setting a new record for the period. Chips accounted for 47.8% of total exports, nearly making up half of South Korea’s outbound shipments.

Year-to-date South Korean exports have reached $765 billion, up 55% YoY. This figure has already surpassed last year’s full-year export volume of $709.3 billion, putting the country on track to hit the $1 trillion annual export target.

After the data release, the KOSPI index rose 1.7%, climbing back above 7000. Samsung Electronics gained 5%. In US pre-market trading as of press time, $Intel(INTC)$ was up more than 5% and $Advanced Micro Devices(AMD)$ rose over 2%.

I. Two Core Drivers Behind the Export Boom

Why have South Korea’s exports exploded?

Upstream supply chain: AI server orders are red-hot, fueling explosive demand for HBM. KB Securities warned in early September that inventory levels at Samsung and SK Hynix have fallen to fewer than 10 days.

Downstream demand: South Korea’s chip exports to China reached $16.6 billion, doubling year-over-year. Exports to the US hit $14.2 billion, up 118% YoY. AI infrastructure buildout is accelerating in both regions.

On top of that, rising memory chip prices created a volume-and-price double lift, further boosting South Korea’s total chip export value and amplifying the headline growth number.

II. Global Semiconductor Boom Confirmed

What does this blockbuster export print mean for markets?

South Korea’s chip exports act as a barometer for global AI hardware demand. This data confirms the extreme bullish cycle across the global semiconductor sector. It is not just a regional windfall, but a true reflection of a full-blown global AI hardware supply chain rally.

Memory chip players are the direct beneficiaries. $SK hynix(SKHY)$ and $Micron Technology(MU)$ are the top names to watch. Surging South Korean semiconductor exports signal backlogged orders for HBM and high-end DRAM, which will keep lifting revenue and gross margin expectations for memory manufacturers.

Further up the chain, large-scale global AI server expansion indirectly benefits $NVIDIA(NVDA)$, $Broadcom(AVGO)$, $Advanced Micro Devices(AMD)$, $Intel(INTC)$, $Qualcomm(QCOM)$ and $ASML Holding NV(ASML)$.

Semiconductor ETFs such as $VanEck Semiconductor ETF(SMH)$, $Direxion Daily Semiconductors Bull 3x Shares(SOXL)$, $Direxion Daily MSCI South Korea Bull 3x Shares(KORU)$ and $Roundhill Memory ETF(DRAM)$ capture sentiment from both memory chips and AI server themes, and stand to gain from this dual tailwind.

III. Recommended South Korea-focused ETFs

While semiconductor fundamentals look strong, single stocks carry high concentration risk. For investors with lower risk tolerance, allocating to South Korea-related ETFs may be a more prudent approach than betting heavily on individual names.

MKOR can react faster on paper, but 0.79% fee needs real alpha. FLKR at 0.09% looks cleaner unless the rotation gets very stock specific
